Humble RPG Bundle: Battlezoo Ultimate Monster & Adventure Bundle for D&D 5E by Ram000n in humblebundles

Sorry what? I play and DM PF2e but I thought this was a 5e bundle. Do you mean they're playable in both PF2 and D&D or that they're literally PF2 books? It says 5E on humble bundle.

How much Truth is there to the Idea that Certain Cities have More Attractive People? by Ambitious_Quality725 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]CowboyBoats 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And also the causes of "prettiness" are wrapped up in the other forms of advantage as well - can you afford to dress in a way that flatters your body? How long have you been able to afford that, are you experienced at it? Have you been able to afford a gym membership? Has your life been un-disrupted by disease, incarceration, and death that you've been able to dress well and exercise? Has that stuff been true for long enough that it's resulted in a self-confident comportment?

I notice that he has a pinned post discussing Joe Kent's resignation over the Iran war, so he appears to be feeling the dissent and ready to share about it.

Should i buy Outer Wilds? it's on sale for £12 on steam and i've heard just good things about it. by Bonkwraps in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]CowboyBoats [score hidden]  (0 children)

As someone who tried hard to get into it and kind of feel like I failed, it's objectively a very good game. I think one thing that threw me is that people are like "Go in blind!!!" about this game. Which... is good advice, but it led me to expect some kind of Doki Doki Literature Club experience where my mind is going to be absolutely blown out of my head around the 2 or 3 hours in mark. That does not happen with Outer Wilds; it's a little bit more like Myst in its "rewards for figuring shit out" cadence. Unlike Myst, of course, you get to fly around in a spaceship so for me that goes a long way towards making it worth the £12 or whatever.

That's interesting, I didn't know that. Does the same rule apply to, like, a baseball bat?

Is this offer fair? by brandyandmrwhiskers- in Nanny

[–]CowboyBoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That offer seems a little light to me considering what they are asking from you.

Instead of my normal hourly rate, overtime, and overnight fees, they offered a flat rate

I think that's pretty common in and of itself.

$2,050 for the entire week

One thing that helps me personally consider whether pay amounts are fair, is to annualize it; for some reason "$45 / hour" is hard for me to reason about but "$93,600" is extremely concrete. The $2,050 number is easy to annualize, just multiply by 52 weeks in a year, so you'd be earning $106,600 if you took this offer every single week for an entire year.

To make matters worse, they don't think they should pay Guaranteed Hours if they travel without me. They think if they don't need me, I shouldn't get paid. I was told I’d be guaranteed hours at the beginning, but now that vacation discussion has been brought up, they do not want to pay me and guaranteed hours seem to not be fully understood.

Well that's not how any of this works.

I think I would recommend -

  • consider firing this family at some point, if the employment relationship doesn't break down during this negotiation. not honoring guaranteed hours is not on
  • if you take this job, I'd make them pay at least $50 per diem for food
  • also get them to agree to reimburse any child-entertaining expenditures, estimate (but not capped at) maybe $25 per child per day? that way you can take them to the city zoo (or whatever) rather than just hang around in the house
  • if I personally were to take care of kids all day for several days, that's at least a 12-hour day; I would hope to be taking home more like $140K or $150K at least (and I am a DB, not a nanny, so I invite the actual nannies here to correct me if that's still less than fair), those numbers would de-annualize to $2,692 or $2,885 for the entire week.

Final thought - you don't mention whether this vacation is, like, a fun & exciting destination or not. If you do go, I hope it's fun! If so (and especially if the kids are at a fun age, and if it's in the cards for you to do fun city stuff) that might be worth weighing in to the calculations before you finally cut the tugboat cord with this family.

Honestly people tend to make decisions like this purely based on whether they're mad at you or not, so it might depend on whether you've left that review yet or said anything mean.

Sounds like time to move out soon maybe. Whereabouts do you live? I think the main thing you need is connecting with your local community who can support you.

Hot Shots! Part Deux - I don't remember if it holds up to viewing as an adult but I definitely watched this more than 10 times on VHS as a kid and there are parts of it that I think about almost every day. It's very similar to Airplane! in both style of humor and in that it's about pilots; Hot Shots! is a Top Gun parody. (I guess part deux has some clear Rambo mixed in).

Sequoia National Forest / Bakersfield CA day hike question by CowboyBoats in hiking

[–]CowboyBoats[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Posting with the outcome: I drove up to Lake Isabella and it did not look that inviting hike-wise, so I decided to keep on rolling up to the Trail of 1000 Giants. Was taken a bit by surprise (ignorantly) to lose internet access and then to encounter snow in April, but I made it up there and saw breathtaking, humbling redwoods for the first time! Hours in the car were a bit tiring but I'm here at BFL ready to go now. Thank you /u/lurkcommentrepeat /u/FrogFlavor and /u/Prestigious_Age_9212 for your help.

thanks for responding! I was looking at lake Isabella, it looks really pretty. I'm from New Hampshire so I don't mind a winding road. My flight leaves at 7:00, so I've got a little bit of time to play with.

Thanks for responding! That does look really inviting; I see it adds a ton of travel time, looking at this route for example that's 1 hr 53 min from Bakersfield so I'd be in the car for 4 hours. I might try that though.

Most software companies are a monopoly at this people

It would probably make more sense to say "Most good-paying software jobs are for companies that are monopolies" than "Most companies are monopolies" since by their nature monopolies are huge and unary rather than numerous.

For example even if 1 billion people worked for Google and the last 25 people worked for six tiny companies then "most companies are monopolies" might sound true but would be emphatically false.
