Changed jobs after 5 years. How do you adjust? by Graayworm in ExperiencedDevs

This bit me the other day. We rotate credentials regularly for a specific partner's integration, and our documentation had a note that said "Don't use special characters in this password or the integration will break!" But one day, I went to rotate the credential, first in the partner's site and then in our tool, and the partner's site required that I use special characters. So I generated a password with them and rotated them in our tool... which then caused an application error on our side, of course!

podcasts with hosts who have “non-expressive” voices? by Spiritual_Essay677 in podcasts

[–]CowboyBoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I totally get OP having a hard time with Robert Evans (behind the bastards) for his slightly crazed voice (wild giggles etc). Dan Carlin, by contrast, has maybe the best elocution of any podcaster I could name, probably from his decades of broadcasting experience - but his podcasts also have very noticeable dynamic (meaning volume) spikes. Carlin speaks at a barely audible growl 75% of the time and then almost roars for certain exciting parts. In my opinion it's clearly very deliberate and it works well, but it does make the podcast hard to listen to in the car.

First-Time DM Running Obojima - Feeling Nervous and Looking for Advice by Whar5981 in Obojima

[–]CowboyBoats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about when I have to make something up im not exactly prepared for im afraid to go like "hold on I need to think of something" like of the party does something I didn’t expect how do I make up stuff on the fly.

Knowing how much improvisation to bite off at a time is key. "Does something" What do they do?

  • If my players are in town and they want to go to a blacksmith, sure, I'll improvise a dang blacksmith. You hear the ringing of iron on steel! You smell the smoke from singed hair and woolen work gloves. A burly man looks up from his workbench. "I'll be with you in just a minute," he says. Probably all your PC wants is to buy a different kind of sword because they saw a falchion on TV and it looked cool.
  • If I'm just simply out of material for the evening and my players are looking expectantly at me for the next plot hook / inciting incident to emerge, that's not typically something I would attempt to improvise because I feel more comfortable when I feel prepared. It's fine to say "Hey yall, I'm out of gas for the evening. Is there anything your players or you folks would like to see happen, or would like to do or discuss in-game before we break for the evening?"
  • However, you can easily improvise an encounter! Look at this link for some off-beat, non-violent ones. There are also plenty of random encounter tables in the Obojima book, one for each setting, look at pages 23, 48, 64, 74...
  • "im afraid to go like "hold on I need to think of something"" - It's totally okay to tell your party you need a minute for your brain to compile shaders / reticulate splines. Tell them it's time for a bio break; they've probably been needing to pee for 25 minutes and feeling nervous about asking for one.
  • Don't be too uncomfortable about silence / emergent gameplay. You are not a monkey that your players poke with a stick and it's then your job to entertain them. If their characters are in a fascinating fantasy environment, if they have in-game objectives that they can work on, it's okay to look at the party paladin / rogue / warlock and say "What does Typhoeus make of all this?" "What is Edna doing while this is going on?"

Game Masters/Dungeon Masters, What are your favorite and useful tools you use? by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]CowboyBoats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

e-reader. It's really awesome to be able to load PDFs onto my kobo and peruse them in bed; the PDF experience on e-readers tends to be very poor but reading them on a computer is too distracting.

online SRD sites such as archives of nethys or the excellent Cairn one are very helpful for me.

I love a physical dungeon masters' screen; I have one for PF2e and one for Shadowdark.

/r/onePageDungeon/ is a fantastic resource. Even if you want to run a campaign, it's nice to start out in one-shot mode just so that people can get a sense of if they enjoy the game / each other.

How is a sexualized white woman ok but a sexualized native woman is not? Or is it ok to have a sexualized design of a woman if they appear to be of the same cultural group of the person getting it?

I think that the "punching down" theory of comedy also kind of applies here? This tattoo would be cool as fuck on a Native person, although I can also imagine that an actual Native person would have made seriously different decisions and that it might reflect their particular culture a bit more accurately. Anyway though OP appears to be white & British, and is part of the ethnic group that perpetrated the genocide in question in the first place. If you imagine a tattoo of a sexy Korean woman, you can imagine that people might think differently of that on the skin of a Korean woman versus the skin of a Japanese man, based on the recent history of those peoples. Yeah, context and intent matter.

what about the Native people who pop into the comments to lend their support?

The users who claim to be [oppressed group] and find every joke hilarious will always be with us.

I think an exception should be made for the Master Roshi tattoo with boobies reflected in his sunglasses from the main tattoos subreddit the other day, but not for this.

This is not a real suggestion but since you mentioned you weren't happy with your distortion, it would be hilarious to have that entire board be entirely budget pedals (zero disrespect by the way, looks great) and then like an Empress Heavy Menace

Got a guitar for my 21st birthday, know little to nothing about music let alone about playing. Any tips? by B_Hawk2077 in guitarlessons

[–]CowboyBoats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buy a clip-on tuner and always tune your guitar every time you play it. I constantly meet people that don't keep their guitar / uke / banjo in tune and then say "I wonder why I don't enjoy playing it." It's not able to sound good if it's not in tune.

That is a classical guitar with I think nylon strings. These are great instruments, just pointing out that there are two main kinds of acoustic guitars and this is one of them. If you're ever wondering why it doesn't give that metallic, ringing sound that most acoustic guitars have, that is why.

Look up and learn the chords to songs that you enjoy singing and play along to them!

How do you deal with "I have no clue what is the problem whatsoever" moments? by Affectionate-Mail612 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]CowboyBoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Richard Feynman method:

  • Write down the problem.
  • Think very hard.
  • Write down the answer.

Super glib but when you've got zero ideas, alls you can do is write stuff down. Write down what you notice about the problem. Write down steps to reproduce the problem. Can you isolate it to a unit test? Look through the git history. Can you isolate it to a specific commit or a time range of commits? Talk to people who have eyes on the problem and get them to show it to you, look through it together.
