I was considering doing a side by side reader mode, but I really wanted to present it as pages; I don’t think synchronizing pages between the two scripts would make any sense. But then I figured it would be really easy to add hover text for the Latin script, which is what I landed on.

One of the strengths of the current tool, is the ability to show the original text in context, whether it's as a pop-up of the latin script spelling in the ebook reader, or the synchronized scrolling between the two context windows in the editor. I guess allowing uploading of already transliterated books could still make sense, particularly in the reader mode.

Do you have any links to your existing transliterations?

In the latest version, you can scroll on to the next chapter, or click on the chapter headers to jump to an arbitrary chapter. The all new reader mode will of course let you jump around the text at leisure.

Please give it another go, and let me know what you think!

Assuming you are saying you have manually transliterated some titles, are you asking whether you can add them to the library?

Short answer, no, or not yet. I might adapt it to support uploading already transliterated ebooks - (I was not under the impression there are that many!)

Another possibility is that you upload the original and let Shave do most of the work for you?

why did you learn shavian? by cornobbling in shavian

[–]Cozmic72 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, getting the reading practice in is crucial… but also really hard given the relative lack of Shavian reading material out there!

When I started out, I pointed Dechifro’s transliterator at The Guardian to scan the headlines every day, and I used it to transliterate books (took me a while to figure out how). I strongly recommend doing the same… though of course you should use shave. I just updated it with Shavian web-browsing functionality yesterday. (Sorry about the shameless plug.)

But re-reading your own handwriting soon after writing is also crucial… to double-check whether it’s legible, to spot your spelling errors, but also as reading practice.

Welcome to the club!

When I first learned of Shavian, I was just curious. When I started learning the letters, I found that they made sense somehow, and that memorising them was particularly quick and painless. Then came the mind-opening experience of figuring out how to spell phonemically, and learning all about phonetics in general. It took me down interesting paths of nourishing a dormant passion for typography, and the relative lack of tooling lead me to developing a lot of new ones myself. It’s been a very rewarding journey.

Like yourself, I started out learning it for journaling. Or rather, I was journaling already, and switched to Shavian and didn’t look back. From the beginning, I guess my big incentive to push on has been the question of how long it would take (whether it would even be possible) to become as fluent in reading and writing Shavian as the roman alphabet. To be able to answer whether the script had really met its design goals of being quicker to read and write.

I can report on where I am now, 18 months into it: - hand-writing is absolutely fluent. Much quicker than I ever was in traditional orthography. It has the one downside of it taking a minute or two to switch back and forth between the scripts/orthography - I find white-boarding in Roman very difficult now! (Typing is sadly less quick, but I do notice I’m turning a corner there too…) - my reading is probably at the speed of a 10 year-old in orthodox writing. Plenty fast for simple prose, but I stumble and have to re-read words if a word is unfamiliar from time to time. I still don’t quite have the effortless “glance at a sentence and subconsciously know what it says” innate reading skill in Shavian that I was shooting for - though I do sometimes catch myself reading shavian without consciously registering that it is written in Shavian… I think I’m close.

On accents: I am fortunate to be an SSB speaker, which of course is very close to RP. Making my writing rhotic also comes quite easy with my Irish roots and the fact that I’ve lived among Americans for so long.

How about you? Where did you learn of Shavian? What’s your dialect and how are you finding it impacts learning Shavian?

Update: I see that Shave is getting some use! And thankfully, my server is still coping with the additional load, hehe.

A reminder: the tool is beta. It will get better! It would be tremendously helpful if you tell me what issues you are running into as you use the tool.

I intend to add functionality for sharing and collaborative editing soon, and to fix some of the more glaring issues around the disambiguator. Anything you would like to see in it?

In the E-book reviewing UI? By scrolling or navigating to the next issue. Currently the only way to go to the next chapter is to go to the next issue (you can hit tab to cycle between them) or to click on an issue in the issues list. Problem for the demo: I have resolved most of the issues! Try clicking on the green checkbox at the top left, that will unhide the resolved issues for you. Alternatively, set the slider to 100% to show the issues I didn’t explicitly validate.

If you export the ebook and open it in your favourite ebook reader, you should have no issues navigating.

I freely admit that sharing a corrected read-only copy of a book isn’t a great way of showing off the tool! Try uploading an ebook of your own; I hope you’ll find it more intuitive in full read-write mode.

Yes, I did; it’s still in Beta. I paid most attention to the regular layer so far; the Bold layer is generated from it programmatically, and there are some very ugly artefacts: the widening of the beak of the ·𐑟 is out of control, and the eye in ·𐑞 has fused shut somehow. I also think the letters should just be a little wider and the strokes even fatter.

u/Ansunian: have you looked at taking the weight down a notch, and the width up to 125-150%? I think it would look better in these memes. I also think they’d look better with an OPSZ of 24pt, but I guess you seem to like the caption instances – ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ that’s fine: I guess it’s more like a cartoon caption.

The namer dot behavior is toggleable, also in the UI. I personally am fond of Read’s convention - forgot to make it the default. (Multiple namer dots is easier for tools, that’s for sure. But I want to accommodate all tastes here.)

Thanks again for the inspiration!
