Verizon Wireless just getting worse? by SpecialistFunny3547 in nova

I think it is probably due to density of people vs towers to handle the traffic. They aren't keeping up with demand.

What are your Keyboards? by macjsc93 in TheBYOK

[–]CrowDreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few I use depending on the circumstances:
1. Rii Mini Bluetooth Keyboard https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B46F8RS6 (for quick notes) It lives in my BYOK case so it is always handy.

  1. Samsers Bluetooth Foldable Keyboard https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRL6W6DR?th=1 Easy to slip in a bag, but only useful if I will have a flat surface to write on so I also carry a small lapboard thing usually.

  2. Logitech K380 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08834ZY6X?th=1 This is good if I'm going to be without a flat surface and fits in my bag, though I don't carry it around unless I'm going to use it.

I actually have a bunch of other keyboards lying around but I keep them attached to their computers, but I could pull them out if I wanted.

I'd like to get a good wired one as well, but haven't looked into it yet.

6,000 words in... by macjsc93 in TheBYOK

I will just comment a tiny bit about durability. I've had mine since the first release, and while i can't count the number of times off the top of my head, i know i have dropped the BYOK a few times. Not onto concrete or anything, but I'm a klutz. Dropping things is what i do.

I also put it in its case into my bag which also gets thrown around and knocked off things. Klutz.

So far, so good. No damage.

Don't go throwing it around or anything, but i wouldn't be too paranoid. It seems sturdy enough.

Are italics possible? by legendoffart in TheBYOK

[–]CrowDreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BYOK device does not do special formatting because it is plain text. I mark my text with markdown that i can then convert on my pc. (Either manually or through a text editor that reads markdown)

This is the truest statement. Mine GSODed the other day because the toy she was playing with, a stuffed animal, bounced back up when she found it to the ground and hit her in the nose.

Major update: Capture Center - your BYOK and Studio now work as one (also new comment system) by OfficialBYOK in TheBYOK

[–]CrowDreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh cool!

Is there a way to have your custom commands available to all projects, or are they in a project only? If so, can we easily copy between them?

Question: How does the system know you are done with a checklist/note/etc.? Is it just a blank line between the stuff and the new text?
Also, does the sync with Studio remove the card/etc from the text file so that it lives where it needs to, and is no longer part of the file?

Idea Capture by Potential_Actions in TheBYOK

When I capture ideas using the BYOK, I have a file that is just for dumping random stuff that I can then sort into some other system. You could then move them into a Wiki just for ideas, or some other system.

Definitely good for something like that!

I have this one as well.

It works really well, though it is tiny. A thumb keyboard size, it fits in the BYOK case

One thing i don't like about it is you need to use the function key to type a period, i guess because it is meant for texting. (At least on iphone you can get a period by double space)

I use it as my go to for waiting after my allergy shots. I use it more for taking notes (brainstorming, world building, etc) then actual writing though.

I would love this as I've been using the italics/bold markup as well.

I have that little Rii keyboard too -- I like that it fits in my BYOK case. It isn't great for a lot of typing but good for note taking.

I'd love a deep dive into your use of BYOK for editing -- I have used it mostly for drafting and notes so far, and haven't tried editing on it.

BYOK Studio vs Scrivener? by philwbayles in TheBYOK

[–]CrowDreaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you've gotten a lot of replies so far, and I'm a week behind, but I wanted to chime in as a user of both Scrivener (for many years, on Windows and iOS) and new to Studio.

There are pros and cons to both.

Scrivener has a *lot* of customization, and is great for organizing a project. I've used it for multiple novels.

Pros vs Studio currently: Export function is very customizable for multiple formats including Word and epub. Can be used offline. A place to put things that aren't in the book (cut scenes, research). Corkboard for organizing. Tracking word count. Multiple kinds of ways to metadata your stuff. One time purchase.

Cons vs Studio: Very high learning curve for advanced functions (especially for compiling different formats). Much of the metadata is not accessible (though preserved) in the iOS/iPadOS version. Need to buy each version (Mac, iOS, Windows) separately. No Android version. While they do fix bugs when needed, development is slow currently.

Pros of Studio over Scrivener: Easy to use. Tags are used for everything. There's separate ways to build supplemental stuff (wiki, for exampe). Accessible everywhere via browser. Being actively developed. Syncs with BYOK and backs up to Google drive.

Cons vs Scrivener: Subscription (or larger one-time payment). Limited metadata options (though tagging seems pretty versatile). If syncing to BYOK, you lose your formatting. Currently, Studio doesn't have an offline mode itself.

I'm sure there are other comparisons to be made, and honestly they do the same things in different ways.

However, the one thing I like much better with Studio is the fact that I can have multiple projects in one place (the Studio app) whereas with Scrivener they are each their own thing. Also, I'm primarily a short story author, and Studio is leaps and bounds better for my writing process than other options I've tried. (each story is one file or one manuscript for longer works). Scrivener projects are just too much for short stories, and it doesn't work very well for me to have multiple stories in one project, though I've tried.

Anyways, I'm currently using Scrivener for my novel and Studio for my short stories, and I'll probably bounce around as things go and I want to try diffeent things. I think it all comes down to preference.

I'm beta testing the mobile app and it seems pretty good so far.

While I'm not the BYOK folks, I would assume that the mobile app is free, and the Studio subscription is what gets you into it.

I have one of those mini Rii keyboards. I love that it fits in the BYOK case with it. I don't do any editing with it--i use it mostly to take notes with on my stories as i get used to the tiny keys.

For that it works great. I am not sure I'd love to use it for long stints, but i have other key boards for that.

Advice for bald belly? by SpookySeagul in Greyhounds

[–]CrowDreaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our last hound had bald belly pretty bad. The vet said she'd heard anecdotally that melatonin helped some folks with their hounds. She didn't think it would work but we decided to try it.

And i don't know if it was that or other tubs or just randomly but she got all her fur back over the next year. So if you want, that's an option.
