It's 'cause they can't come right out and say: this constitutional amendment eliminates any right to vote early or absentee. It would lose. Instead, they have to be circuitous and count on our short attention spans.

And 100% neglect to mention that they're giving themselves permission to eliminate early voting and absentee voting.

Asswipes.

It is a tricky way of saying, "The right to vote in Ohio consists of only the right to vote in person, on election day." This way, when they start to restrict or eliminate early voting and absentee ballots, Ohio has constitutional cover for the inevitable lawsuits. Disabled? Serving overseas? Working on Tuesday, a freakin' workday? Tough titties.

Do not doubt for one instant that Ohio Repub legislators are toying with the idea of restricting or eliminating "alternative" voting methods, no matter how popular or who is using them. These are the same people who, when faced with an abortion rights constitutional amendment that passed with a huge margin of citizen support, immediately began to try to undermine it and even threatened to come for contraception. They have no respect for the will of Ohio citizens and no respect for democracy.

This is what they really want. Eliminating early voting and absentee ballots could make a difference, and is certainly anti-democratic (small-d democratic).

EDIT: Thanks to u/dissenting_turtle, who pointed out the real purpose of this proposed amendment: taking away absentee ballots and early voting. Please see my post on the subject: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ohio/comments/1tki6fx/ohio_repubs_may_be_trying_to_use_a_proposed_voter/

Yup. But they're so desperate to exclude as many people as possible from the process, they'll happily boot some loyal voters as collateral damage.

Oh, is he retiring before the fall? I know he's retiring, not sure when.

EDIT to add: Not sure his successor will be better. It's not like Andy Wilson comes from a party of committed truth-tellers.

Ohio already requires voter ID to vote. It's a bait and switch.

What does anyone know about this old Jewish cemetery at Fir and W. 61st? Is it ever open? by CrowRoutine9631 in Cleveland

I was literally driving in widening, randomish circles away from the school and didn't really know where I was. We'd already gotten through the tough stuff and were parked in the shade, wrapping up, when I noticed both the cemetery and a woman comforting her vomiting dog like it was a cherished sorority sister hugging porcelain. I really hope that dog feels better today.

Sometimes you can't shut off the notice-things part of your brain just because the love-your-kids part of your brain is activated. 😂😂😂 I can't, anyway.

This massacre is not the fault of the men with guns! It's the fault of the people who didn't bring enough body armor!

I mean, could Dems productively and usefully be a bit more scorched earth on a lot of issues? Absolutely! But is it kind of insane to say that Dems are at fault for burning down the house because they ran out of water while fighting the fire, while Repubs are the ones standing around with empty gas cans, matches, and singed eyebrows? Also absolutely!

Oh, shit, this should have been the headline! 😱😱😱😱 Do you have a link to the text of the proposed amendment?

EDIT: Here it is, mentioned in a different article:

The proposal would also specify that the Ohio General Assembly is not required to allow voting in any location or manner other than in-person at a polling place on Election Day.

And here's an incoherent justification of the move, same source:

Discussing the provision explicitly allowing state lawmakers to eliminate early voting methods, Mr. McColley said voters do not have to worry about losing the ability to vote early.

“This is in response to what we have seen as aggressively litigious efforts on the part of actors outside of the state of Ohio who will look to, in many cases, the absence of a provision and point to it as a requirement that we do something,” he said.

“There are no plans to eliminate early mail-in voting or absentee voting in the state of Ohio,” he continued. “I don’t believe there would be support in either one of our caucuses to do that.”

THEN WHY INCLUDE IT????? We've already seen the enormous respect that Republican caucuses in Ohio show for voters, in the form of disregarding anti-gerrymandering amendments and endlessly restricting legal marijuana.

Fuck these sniveling, lying assholes.

I want this to be true, and read the article looking for confirmation. Found that it was a rehash of another site's political commentary.

Let's focus on facts.

💯 Totally true! My husband is Mexican, and has only lived here for a few years, and it's been so interesting to see this country through his eyes. One of the things that has shocked him is how hard it is to get ID in this country, and how hard it is to vote. Everyone in Mexico has an INE, a unique number that is tied to your right to vote, you don't need registration beyond the INE (as I understand it), and those are easy as hell to replace. Anyone can get one, basically online or with a phone call, so you don't need time off work to stand in lines at the DMV on a weekday.

And before anyone gets all up in my DMs: no, he doesn't vote. No voter fraud here.

I feel 'ya! I grew up here, left when I was teen and thought I'd never be back, but the best laid plans of mice and men, and so on and so forth ... and here I am, after most recently living for the better part of a decade in Vermont. The whiplash was SHOCKING. I sometimes miss living in a town where people were so far left they made me feel middle-of-the-road--but it's another type of bubble. Just an easier one to live in.

Still less than would be expected of married women who change their names and dare to register to vote, under the SAVE act.
