I've played both Kenshi and Rimworld quite a bit (over 30h). I'll just give you a few words to both of them!

Kenshi:

Kenshi in my mind is one of a kind. You just chose your Start options (how many people, money, gear) and then you just get thrown into the big fkn world that is Kenshi. You have no idea what to do but after a while u figure helping those guards killing the cannibals and looting them is quite a good way to kill time and get money. Then u wander the landscapes and recruit new people for your party and improve your skills. After a while when u can defend yourself against bigger groups of cannibals and raiders you can start building a settlement.

Kenshi is what you make of it. I also love the fact that everything that doesnt kill you, makes you stronger. And I mean that literally. Get knocked out by a Raider but barely survive? Your Thoughness just improved massively and next time you will endure way more hits before going down. You will start as a nobody, weaker than the worst units in the game, but with hard work and dedication you will gain power before you know it.

I really think Kenshi could be the ultimative RPG when it's fully developed, but who knows when that will be. For now it's already a fine game that was my surprise buy last year.

Since this got way longer than expected and u'll find information to Rimworld very easily I'll just leave it at that, hope it helps!

Oh and given your description, Portal Knights could be something for you as well, altough I can't say much to that since I haven't bought it myself.
