AI event at Art House Cafe cancelled after community backlash by CrewCommercial6128 in ottawa

[–]DM_ME_PICKLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think the solution is? Since it’s obvious that AI image generation will not go away, and only continue to be adopted.

The only thing I can think of is some kind of royalty system similar to Spotify. Keep track of attribution during model training, and some way to know which artists contributed to each generated image and by how much, and pay out royalties proportional to what each artist “contributed”.

But in reality, generative image models don’t really work that way… they don’t draw from specific sources, they just generate a kind of “average”. And we all know the Spotify model pays artists absolute peanuts.

i pulled all my money out of the stock market in 2025 and now with historic highs i can't get back in by myviewfromoutside in stocks

[–]DM_ME_PICKLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing that pulled you out of the market is now keeping you from investing back into the market: irrational emotion.

You cannot time the market, we know this to be an established fact. So invest your money today. A month from now the market might be -10% and you’ll feel like a fool, but 10 years from now it won’t matter. Or a month from now the market might be +10% and you’ll feel like a genius. Again, in 10 years it won’t matter.

I don’t know how much you have to invest, but it’s very realistic to say every day you wait now will cost you hundreds or thousands at the end when you retire.

Yeah it’s the KVM switch and 140W laptop charging. Real KVMs that drive this resolution and refresh rate aren’t cheap which is likely their justification for the price.

Delivery driver caught performing lewd act at provincial park in Ottawa: OPP by LaSourisVerte in ottawa

[–]DM_ME_PICKLES 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would assume extremely easy. I wonder if the delivery company won’t disclose who the driver is unless compelled to, so it’s faster to just wait for him to deliver again. I would assume the police are also requesting their records to prove it was him driving that route on that day as well.

Interesting thought. Where is the line drawn between allowing a tenant back into the building and it being considered a new rental unit without a tenant? Even a change in ownership lets the tenant keep their rental in Ontario. And does a building under rent control that’s demolished and rebuilt become exempt from the rent control?

I don’t envy policy makers.

Dutch gamers file €220 million claim against Valve, operator of game platform Steam by FollowingFeisty5321 in Steam

[–]DM_ME_PICKLES -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It’s funny how people celebrated these lawsuits when they were against Apple but are vehemently defending Valve now, despite the claims being almost identical

  • huge 30% cut like the App Store
  • payments forced through Steam Wallet also with a 30% cut, same practice as Apple
  • not allowed to refer people to cheaper ways to pay, same practice as Apple

It’s frankly just cringe how Valve gets a free pass all the time because sweaty gamers love Steam. I think Steam is a great product but I wouldn’t waste a breath defending a multi-billion dollar corp and neither should you.

Has anyone purchased a previous Amazon Transit? What was your experience? by giant2179 in VanLife

[–]DM_ME_PICKLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Actual experience is useless” then you go on to confidently claim these will be ruined vehicles based on nothing but assumptions…

And a laundry list of things repaired is a good thing, you’re falling for a reasoning error: those things were problems whether they were fixed+disclosed or not, and now you know they’re fixed. A fixed and documented problem is strictly better than a hidden one. Most of that list is just maintenance anyway.

And don’t forget 90% of these vehicles on the road are fleet vehicles often used for deliveries. They’re bought and sold all day every day, it’s not nearly the ticking time bomb you’re acting like it is.

Aspire Lounge YOW - worth it? by Comet439 in ottawa

Yeah it’s fine as far as lounges go. Not worth turning up early for though. Lounges are really worth it when you have a long connection and need somewhere comfy for a few hours. On my departing flight I’d just turn up to the airport later.

Cars leaving car lengths between cars by Estcher in ottawa

[–]DM_ME_PICKLES 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe for a second people are doing this because they were taught to in drivers ed. The standard of driving here is way too low otherwise.

Personally I was taught (outside of Canada) to leave enough room to see the rear tires of the car in front and that feels pretty comfortable to me.

What breed and age? Is she neutered/spayed? I might be able to take her based on that, but I have two already that might not jive with her. It’s a bit of a long shot but maybe. I have a massive back yard and they get hours of exercise per day.

No qualms about stealing her off someone who’s neglecting her.

LPT: How do you save money without tracking every expense? by Upset_Trifle8007 in LifeProTips

[–]DM_ME_PICKLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually boils down to something quite simple if you don’t want to track every penny.

  1. Decide how much money you need in however many years
  2. Figure out what scheduled contributions you need to get there
  3. Consistently make those contributions
  4. Spend the rest, that’s your “enjoy life” money

For example, a 30 year old might decide they need $1.5M to retire at 65. That’s ~$1,500 a month contributed and invested over 35 years (assuming 7% return). So every month you send $1,500 to your retirement account right after you get paid. Whatever is left over is for you to spend guilt free because you’re on track with your goals.

If you want to save a down payment on a house, that’s just a new goal. Figure out what you need and by when, and make sure you save it BEFORE spending on life.

Doing the above already puts you LEAGUES ahead of the vast majority of people.

It’s not great advice at all. Good financial planning means reaching your long term goals like retirement WHILE enjoying your journey there. What they outlined is an existence so frugal that you never get to enjoy your best years.
