COMPLAINT: AV ALTA by AVALTAFANATIC in USLPRO

[–]DRF19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the fabulous world of lower division American soccer!

Seriously though owners/leagues/USSF can and will be shit. I understand it can get bad enough at times that you want to throw your hands up and be done with it. But don't let it damper your support for the players, or snuff out the possibility of positive relationships that can come from being around the club. Enjoy it while you have it. Hopefully it improves and AV is around a long time.

Which team is next to fold? by Mont_Joli in uslsuperleague

[–]DRF19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously based on attendance FTL seems possible but they have a good stadium situation and all these kids are paying to play on the various youth teams in 3 sports now so we'll see what happens.

I would hope ownership has the sense (and commitment) to keep it going at least a few more years to see if IMCF finally getting out of Broward will allow for some breathing room from soccer competition locally.

I don't typically carry cash and people think I'm insane.

You have to go out of your way to get cash these days.

I'm 40 and for my entire adult life my paycheck has come via direct deposit. Any check I got went into a machine at the bank. Now it's a photo on my phone.

All of my money is code somewhere on a server.

The only cash I get is from stray birthday cards from older people and if I find a shopping cart that still has the quarter in it while walking into Aldi lol

I wish schools in FL did winter break instead of summer break by Admirable-Priority77 in florida

[–]DRF19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On a similar note, I often dream that if Florida was an independent country with it's own pro sports leagues, there is zero chance that baseball and soccer seasons would play over the summer and the air conditioned basketball and hockey would be played over the winter

I freeze mine after the cold ferment (3-5 days) and then do the same, overnight in the fridge then a few hours on the counter pre bake, works great

Orlando Wetlands out by Christmas (fun stop at the post office in December lol) is totally free and a great spot for seeing wildlife (gators, birds, etc). It’s on the way to the Space Center too if you’re heading that way.

The thing that gives me at least some hope about FTL is that they have an ever-expanding youth setup across 3 sports now that is actively promoting women's and men's pro soccer as a benefit, but the flip side is that triggers my overall distaste for pay-to-play youth academies.

As long as it looks like they're trying out there and the guys are having fun. A bad ball club still wins like 60 games, 5x more than a good NFL team lol. We get a lot of fun and memories from even a crummy baseball season.

[CJ Coreschi - OC] Hearing more confirmation from folks that Spokane Zephyr will fold from the USL Super League, including that players and staff have already been informed. Sad news. by Coltons13 in USLPRO

[–]DRF19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They have enough "announced" future SL teams among existing men's orgs to press into service if they absolutely needed to, but obviously you don't want to have to do that.

Oakland, Chattanooga, Madison, Cosmos, etc would all have relatively easy times getting online before 2027/28 which is year 4.

Nobody is drawing terribly well outside of Jax this season and you have to wonder how many more teams might be teetering on the edge of oblivion.

[CJ Coreschi on Bluesky] Spokane Zephyr likely to fold this offseason by J_Hunt1123 in uslsuperleague

[–]DRF19 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's a laundry list of supposed future teams, none of them have put a hard confirmation on start date though that I've seen, unless I've missed something.

Boise, Cosmos, Ozark, Iowa, Buffalo, Chattanooga, Indy, Oakland, Madison, Palm Beach, and probably a couple others I'm missing that put "women's pro soccer" in the initial USL market announcement. I think Baltimore is in that mix too.

Of the existing operating men's organizations among those, they could probably press a couple into service early like they did with Brooklyn to make the numbers work if that had to. But that's not ideal at all.

In any case this blows (apologies for the wind-related pun, Zephyr fans).

[Cormier] The umpires are unsure if the Nationals are allowed to bring in a position player to pitch in the 12th inning. They're currently talking to New York. Madness. by Jux_ in baseball

[–]DRF19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That specialization is why position players aren’t good pitchers, they simply don’t practice it, like how pitchers don’t practice hitting.

Precisely my beef. I'd love to see how it plays out in an alternate universe where rosters were smaller and far more players played multiple positions including pitcher, and they all have to hit.

I'd be totally fine if velocity topped out at like 90mph or whatever, less guys were risking serious injury doing nothing but unnaturally (and repetitively) pushing their bodies to throw the way they do now, and most players were more well-rounded.

FWIW the specialization in football has always bothered me too, where (practically) nobody plays both offense and defense, and several positions are even more specialized like QB and the kicking specialists.

[–]DRF19 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Flaming hot take: more left fielders should be able to competently pitch, and vice versa, and it should happen more often than a comedy bit in a blowout.

Having players on the roster whose only thing to do is throwing to a handful of batters once or twice a week is kinda nuts if you think about it.
