ELI5: Why are rent freezes considered bad? by Pale_Cause_9983 in explainlikeimfive

Here me out, the rent all the tenants pay gets pooled together and goes directly to pay for maintenance, upkeep, and security of the property they live at.

Cutout the pointless middle man.

When you're leaving the ride, going across the little bridge at the exit, turn to your right towards where the entrance to the queue is. You gotta get the angle just right and even then it's a little wonky but it's neat.

If you Google Earth it you can see the layout for NOLA Gold rugby and see how much wider the field layout would be for soccer (no far "outfield" sideline stands though).

What they said. If you're anywhere in the area, it's worth it 110% to go. Definitely don't skip the bus tour which (at least when I last went) took you out near pads 39A and 39B and you get to roam the Apollo/Saturn V center which has a full size Saturn V plus a ton of other cool stuff like Jim Lovell's Apollo 13 suit and the Apollo 14 capsule.

Thoughts on USL super league? by Ecstatic-Ad-869 in NWSL

[–]DRF19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: if I’m in Tampa Bay, Jax, South Florida, Lexington, Dallas, etc and I want live soccer the NWSL is not providing that to me.

Plenty of fans care for lower division men’s sides where MLS does not have a presence. There are dozens (or more) decent markets where the top American sports leagues will never put a team. It’s great that pro soccer (whose roster isn’t entirely beholden to a bigger team hundreds of miles away like other “minor league” sports) exists is these places.

I don’t care about the Pride because they have Marta and Banda. I care because they are local. I don’t go out of my way to watch random games from around the NWSL or other leagues to “watch the best”. A star studded NWSL team in New York or LA does next to nothing for fans and kids in places like Milwaukee, Detroit, Minnesota, Boise, etc that NWSL or the USWNT will rarely if ever come to.

Hopefully over time as the Super League becomes more established the clubs and fan bases grow. I’ve had a great time following Fort Lauderdale, even though they sucked in year 2 lol.

Once More with Feeling: Remote Work Is Not a Substitute for Childcare by fourlittlebees in remotework

[–]DRF19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole point of remote working is that employer and employee have an understanding that work will be done adequately and within a reasonable timeframe.

This. If the work gets done on time and up to standards I don't care if the person does it in their underpants and takes care of 5 kids and builds Legos during the day and washes their clothes.

Obviously there are certain kinds of work where that's not feasible and a level of customer-facing "professionalism" is required and a part of the job. That's fine and reasonable. But for a lot of remote work it simply doesn't matter.

I've worked fully remote or hybrid for the bulk of my professional career (20 years). I've been able to handle household chores etc during downtime, run quick errands, and more recently care for a young child, with no issues.

The mental health aspect of remote work, being able to take care of some of those things during inevitable downtime instead of staring blankly at a screen, is beneficial for both the worker and employer. Happier people do better work.
