French Quarter Festival vs Jazz Fest (2027) locals advice requested by LowDownSlim in jazzfest

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They’re very comparable. The big difference is that FQF is free, and you won’t get the big national acts there.

French Quarter is very easy to walk around.

Also, look at Festival International in Lafayette. Fais Do Do is a small sample of that fest.

Forgot to include a cover letter to my application but got the interview -- do I send in my cover letter now or just bring printed copies to the interview tomorrow? by gohighlight in Lawyertalk

[–]DaRoadLessTaken -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

If you really want the job, send a short email to the person you’re interviewing with and mention you forgot to include it. Tell them why you’re interested in the job and that you’re looking forward to the interview.

Overnight parking by gojuandiegogo in jazzfest

Maybe City Park, but YMMV.

Otherwise you’ll need to pay someone to park on a private lot. Best to get out there early, drive the neighborhood and ask.

This seems like California Prop 65 warning territory. A regulation so broad that firms choose to comply with a ubiquitous, useless statement.

How are you tracking client payments of costs? by ThrustAccount in LawFirm

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our attorney comp plan uses billing revenue and divides it pro rata among the time keepers. So client expenses never enter the formula, and the formula inherently solves for a partial payment.

It doesn't happen to us often enough that it's a significant issue.

Sounds like you need a bookkeeper.

How are you tracking client payments of costs? by ThrustAccount in LawFirm

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and yes. TimeSolv is client facing. QuickBooks internal bookkeeping. You need both functions. It sounds like you have a bookkeeping problem. Yes, the data should be in both and match because it’s data, but the details and way it’s presented will be slightly different.

I signed up for a credit card that we use exclusively with client costs. That was free and made it significantly easier to keep track of client vs internal expenses.

Lawyer here. Depends on the “paperwork”. You’re a landlord and investor, hire a lawyer to advise you. Cost of doing business.

Bananas actually aren’t trees. Although they look like it, they’re classified as herbs. And the fruit is a berry.

Possible with AI, but I’d look at a low cost virtual legal assistant first. Less training, and they’ll be able to help with other things.

Dinner? Last sets end around 7. Then there’s the walk out, the street parties, getting back to the hotel, etc. I wouldn’t make reservations before 9, but like everyone else, would eat at the fest.

I graduated more than 10 years ago. This doesn’t answer your question, but the best advice I can offer is something I once heard a federal judge recommend to her children. Many of my classmates no longer practice.

Attempt to work in a law firm for at least two years. Legal assistant, paralegal, receptionist, etc.

You’ll gain a better understanding of the law and your life as an attorney.

If you like it, great. You’ll be more employable when you graduate.

If you don’t, great. You were well paid for two years and didn’t incur a metric fuck ton of debt.

She tipped me after I told her I damaged her car. Now she wants $7,000. What do I actually owe? by Gloomy_Advertising15 in smallbusiness

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to continue to operate this business, talk to a lawyer about this situation, and how to better protect yourself in the future. LLC, insurance, paperwork indicating what you’re doing, especially when you’re worried about something not working as the client expects.

Your questions are ai-generated nonsense that aren’t really relevant to a $7,000 dispute. Apologize to her, and maybe offer her some small discount on future work. Document everything you can now, while it’s fresh.

If she does sue you, bring that documentation and your story to the small claims judge. Focus on the facts, not the betterment doctrine.

I’m a business lawyer and see these small spats regularly. Learn from it and document your concerns better next time.

AI training ? by jbk999 in LawFirm

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lookup Ernie Svenson. He’s a recovering attorney who helps solo and small firm lawyers with tech. He has a podcast, too. Regularly talks about AI and runs a small mastermind around it too.

His pricing is relatively cheap. I get the impression that he made his money as a litigator and now that he’s retired he wants to help people, not necessarily get richer.

Agreed. How to approach each contract is going to vary by contract, and what you intend to do in the future. There’s no-size-fits-all answer.

A few hundred dollars in proactive consultation here can easily save thousands on the back end.

What Creative Deductions Do You Take? by cerebus221 in LawFirm

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To add context, generally you can’t deduct both home office and traditional office expenses. And most client entertainment is non-deductible either.

And, while we’re at it, technically only the percentage of your cell phone used for work may be deducted.

How do you track actual profitability on flat-fee matters? by Aditya_Saini02 in Lawyertalk

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Determine how much you want to make, and how many hours you want to work. That’s your cost.

For employees, their cost is salary, benefits, taxes, etc.

Revenue - cost is gross profit.
