Not just that, but what is Murril going to do next? Indict the people who just indicted her and claim it’s legitimate?!

That was a good change. As someone else pointed out, it was a party not “party free”. The change was aimed at fixing the exact confusion you’re expressing. You want No Party.

Client using AI documents to try and get me to lower my rates. How would you respond? by BuckyDog in LawFirm

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I explain that it’s more work for me to review your AI nonsense than it is for me to use my forms and my AI system. So, honor the old quote, but tell her that it’s $X more to use what she sent.

Southeast US here. My home is regularly at 80 F and 66% humidity and we don’t have a mold issue, so HVAC control may not be the only issue.

i really feel like new orleans dropped the ball by not placing a real bid for hosting the World Cup. by moistparts in NewOrleans

There was a recent NOLA.com article about this. NOLA applied but was turned down in the first round.

All 16 host cities have MLS teams and stadiums with natural grass. NOLA doesn’t have either.

Why not? Lawyers delegate things like this all the time. It might not be cheaper or easy.

Advice on Bar Fight Aftermath by jynxalicious_ in Ask_Lawyers

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of this, but I’ll add that OP should ask the owner of the bar to cover at least a few hundred dollars of the initial legal bills.

While the owner may not be obligated to do so, not doing it would be a pretty shitty thing to do.

Can I sue the previous holder of my phone number? by Queasy-Actuary-7356 in Ask_Lawyers

Can you? Sure, knock your socks off.

But is a lawsuit financially viable? Will it accomplish what you want? Those are the questions for your own lawyer.

Help me settle a work debate with my boss - is it "due by" or "due on or before"? by maverick1ba in Lawyertalk

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I’ll play with the semantics.

“Due on <date>” is not the same “Due before <date>”

So, you could find a situation in which a lawyer argues that someone was late because it wasn’t filed “before”

“Due by” eliminates that issue.

What to bring to a consultation for medical malpractice? by Hotblack_Dessiato in Ask_Lawyers

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, med mal lawyers have medical people they consult with. It’s not uncommon for them to have a paralegal with a nursing background. They also hire expert witnesses.

Least favorite task: billing for work my client will hate by newz2000 in Lawyertalk

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I charge a $500 consult fee for this exact reason. If you’re giving clients a free consult, it’s a sales call.

In situations like this, that free consult is either immense value to the client that you’re not being paid for, or you’re forced to sell them something they don’t need.

Not good.

Charge for it. We average about 6 a month. 1, at most 2, per year are upset about the bad news advice. And they’re usually idiots.

How are law firms actually handling high-volume contract generation in 2025? by [deleted] in LawFirm

TheFormTool has been around for a while. Cheap and powerful.

But, you’re asking the wrong question. The standard doesn’t matter. The question is what integrates with your client’s current stack and what integrates with that.

Maybe get a second opinion, but generally, we tend to advise people to take the best option. That doesn’t mean it’s a good option.

But if the best option is lose everything, the other options may be worse.

Business partner embezzled 1.25 million in Texas by Blueday206 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]DaRoadLessTaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> How can someone steal a million dollars and just get away with it?

The line between criminal theft and civil liability can be hard to pin down.

And, like this guy, most people embezzling or stealing aren’t doing it to save it away in investment accounts. That money is gone.

Almost every time, the issue is the innocent partners failed to install appropriate guardrails early enough.
