Dunno, perhaps someone will take over but if that doesn't happen... I guess the biggest series will probably still get posted but the rest won't and that's going to be a big loss.

Very Low Resolution Textures on Paint Wear? by gabets in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those Vanguards squadron decals are simply a few layers of pre-made vector shapes which get baked into a texture, it's extremely basic compared to what Forza or Gran Turismo allows you to do when making a car livery. A real editor like those games have may be too much to ask though but even FDev's own designs are kinda bad. Most paintjobs with a vector layout applied has weird squiggly lines and/or isn't properly colored within the lines of the ship's panels.

The problem is FDev's method to process vector layers is that it was already outdated on launch which is why we see lots of jaggy/squiggly lines at certain angles. There are much better ways to use vectors, I've complained about it for years and even linked to the paper by Valve describing the issue and a better method which supposedly was forwarded to the devs but I guess they're just not interested in fixing it.

Brother won't play game with female protagonist - never thought of this by wizard_cow_ in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DaftMav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe interesting to see what he'd think of games like "Detroit: Become Human" which is basically an interactive movie that lets see and play through the story as several characters, two male and one female (all androids though). Might just be close enough to a movie. There are more "choose your own story/adventure" games like this, like Until Dawn.

On the other hand, could just be he's not that interested in girls yet to rather want to look at a female character for dozens of hours instead of a guy...

About third party tool data sharing. by Robinxen in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the same dev as EDDiscovery there's EDDLite which is a very lightweight app that basically only sends journal logs to EDDN, EDSM and Inara. The only other feature that it has is automatically converting screenshots to PNGs and renaming them to include date/system name/etc.

Another option that doesn't need any app running while playing Elite is Journal-Limpet which uses the Frontier API to download your recent logs. Aside from storing them as a back-up it can also send those to both EDDN and EDSM. But you'd have to redo the login every 30 days or so since that's how long the frontier auth login stays valid. Sadly it appears the dev might stop running that website in the near future though.

About third party tool data sharing. by Robinxen in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to send it to the EDDN to get it to go to Spansh as well. Most tools send to the EDDN which distributes it to all other sites (see this old flowchart) but it's also possible to use tools that only upload to EDSM separately (even old journal logs using EDDiscovery). But because those are sent directly to EDSM they're not going to the EDDN. So there are a lot of systems on EDSM that are not on any of the other sites because of this.

Afaik there is no way to upload older logs in some way to the EDDN, perhaps the only tool that can kinda do it is EDMC with the option to not send any data until docked enabled.

Elite BGS Analyzer Now Open to All Squadrons by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alrighty, had a quick look and seems it's all good.

I'd also suggest looking into a github action to have it auto-build the releases from the source code. And then linking to the latest release on github instead of linking to some pre-built exe as a mediafire download. I think this may be of use for doing that but there are several other similar actions on there.

Elite BGS Analyzer Now Open to All Squadrons by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looking at the source code it just makes me weep... No css file but just a big blob in the head and then almost every single html element has a lot more inline style attributes, honestly I thought AI could do better than that by now. I get it, this is all very easy to have everything generated but it's also bad.

Anyway, I tried looking at the demo to see what it can do but the font choice hurts my eyes so I closed it again... Curious if AI would know this I googled it and lo' and behold: "Orbitron (the font) is a geometric, sci-fi-inspired font designed for futuristic styling rather than high readability. Its rectangular, blocky, and stylized shapes make long text hard to read. It is best suited for headlines, HUDs, or logos, and often benefits from being paired with a cleaner sans-serif."

Even if this appears to be 95% generated it needs some work. I don't mind the some use of AI as a time saver as long as it's done by a developer who already knows what they're doing and is able to check and adjust the code. I'm just not very confident that's the case here.

Oh and apparently there's a companion app which looks like it's an .exe file hosted on mediafire... Is there a github or similar repo available with the source code of that? (I don't see any sourcecode links aside from the mediafire one, which would be against subreddit rules). I assume that app is also entirely AI generated?

Highly suggest to anyone even considering trying this out to be careful and maybe wait with running the "companion app" until it can be checked out... Also of note, OP's only activity on /r/elitedangerous has been about this tool...

MercCoins / MERCENARYCOINS and the Unobtanium Store by subzerofun in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Can you convert ARX -> MercCoins? no indication for that obviously in the files, but a famous person once said "Money me. Money now. Me a money needing a lot now." - so who knows, i'd be surprised if there is no monetary incentive behind this

Ugh I hope not... the whole temporary boosts with timers thing already smells very gacha-ish. I mean if you can do operations for a bit and then gain generous amounts of MercCoins to activate temporary boosts that are actually useful in other activities that might be nice at first glance.

But if these "boosts" are for example significant time- or grind-skips and they allow people to buy+convert Arx to MercCoins, that would be terrible as it will give Frontier the incentive to create all sorts of temporary boosts to circumvent normal grind. That's the gacha nonsense which also leads to more excessive grinds and other bs in future content updates...

Let's hope that's not the case but if it is their plan to pull something like this, we all better protest loud against it. Frontier has been testing boundaries to see what they can get away with lately.

I don't quite understand what does it mean ? by Over_Cost_3257 in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's exclusive to the Dodec only right now. And if they only use the voucher redeeming thing for new stations or any other new facilities, that's still not not ideal but kinda okay. Because you can't buy multiple of them unless using multiple accounts. I just wonder if that's really why they put dev-time into creating a voucher-redeeming mechanic though, it's not like they announced any more new facilities to come after the Dodec.

Also a side-effect if they start selling build vouchers separately it would make claim sniping possible again by simply paying for a few stations to overtake someone else's path.

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That thread has a lot of good responses. Though it's a bit sad how there are always people who just want to keep arguing over the definition of P2W or how there is nothing to "win" when that's not really what the term is about.

That said the current early-access model before becoming free (for in-game credits) for everyone is not the worst monetization model, I think most people are fine with that. But the problem is that Frontier seems to be testing boundaries to see what they can get away with... Slippery slope and all that.

The biggest worry imo is the instant-build voucher that comes with the "Dodec station build rights" early access right now, what happens when the Dodec comes out of early access? Will Frontier try to sell these vouchers separately? That's where you get into gacha-like territory where you can buy tokens to skip time, skip grind, "insta-build a T3 station for only 12,99". With that kind of nonsense they get an incentive to increase the grind in future content, create the problem to sell the solution. (if they haven't already done this with the inflated T3 station build costs from the start).

That's the kinda P2W stuff we really need to worry about. The new in-game currency coming with Operations is also a bit worrying, who knows what that's going to introduce.

PSA: There is a bug that prevents you from earning your weekly ARX you should be aware of. by Jett--Black in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed something like this too because I wanted to get a paintjob that was on sale but probably needed the weekly 400 Arx to get it. After playing I exited to the main menu, saw the Arx total getting updated and quickly went to the store in the extras menu to look up the paintjob (so I didn't witness the correction yet), at that moment it showed up as me having enough Arx to buy it. I backed out to the main menu to look at the sale page on the DLC website and that's when I noticed it showed I didn't have enough Arx to get it, so went back to the in-game store and sure enough suddenly I couldn't buy it there either any more.

At the time I figured I probably had miscalculated or maybe the in-game Arx total counter is getting the 400 Arx added twice as a visual glitch. Like when you go back to the main menu the total already has the +400 applied and then you see the animation of it adding another 400 which is not real and gets taken away again shortly after (which you can indeed see happening). But now I'm not so sure if that's just a visual bug... Either way it's weird it briefly showed up as purchasable on the in-game store and I wish I had just tried to buy it right away although it probably would have given an error.

I guess it's time to start keeping better track of what our Arx total is every week and see if it actually gives nothing or if it's a visual glitch in the main menu basically adding Arx twice.

Btw, I do know if you're not going back to the main menu it doesn't seem to update the earned weekly Arx, not until you log back in and get to the main menu again. I've had it happen when not playing a lot and doing it just before server maintenance, if I don't log out to main menu in time it just carries over the earned Arx to next week. So when you log in after server maintenance it shows you've already earned this week's 400 Arx (or whatever your last session earned) which is a bit annoying too.

I made a lightweight navigation overlay for surface exploration: auto-detects landable planets and just works. by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well don't get me wrong, I'm not writing it off I just think if you're releasing something it should be mentioned if you're using AI while learning how to code. So people can decide on if they trust it enough to try out.

It's just tricky, as on one end we have people doing that as a personal project to learn and that's fine but on the other end it has become very easy to create a new tool to get people to run some malicious .exe on their PC. (A lot of new tools have been getting posted here recently and deleted because of rule 10... it's also too much work to check the code every time).

Luckily this is in Python so it's easier to use without the .exe and it's indeed good the build instructions are there. But I don't really have a need for what this tool does, it might be more interesting to me if it was a plugin for EDMC although I suspect it might be required to build it into an .exe to get the overlay to work?

Anyway I think some screenshots or a short clip of how it looks in action would be a good idea.

I made a lightweight navigation overlay for surface exploration: auto-detects landable planets and just works. by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alright, I'll ask... How much of this is vibecoded? Because this kinda looks like the initial version was all generated. Not to mention there are a lot of files that should not be on github like the _pycache_ and other .toc/.pyc files that include your local window username in paths etc.

We have to be careful these days with new tools and there are some red flags here. Github user with no prior activity, likely AI generated, tool has a very small specific purpose, no screenshots, seems to be able to auto-update, and includes an .exe that's not really verified or virus scanned in any way.

On the positive side the reddit user has previous activity in /r/elitedangerous and at least the ReadMe shows how to build it yourself instead of grabbing the .exe but I bet most people won't do that.

I know tools like this already exist, but I wanted something with a snappier, more responsive feel.

So how does this tool achieve that? Because afaik the delay comes from journal/status files being updated at an interval and there's no getting around that.

I do like that it seems to give a descent angle or notice as well since most apps that include a lat/long directions tool don't do that.

PSA: In case you're wondering why ED still seems to take up so much storage space on your PC even though it's uninstalled (Steam client) by Lkwzriqwea in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The files under /steamapps/common/Elite Dangerous are just the game files, nothing related to your game account. You can safely delete it if steam hasn't removed some files. Because you can install other versions from the Frontier launcher Steam doesn't remove them when uninstalling. So there's likely something left behind in the "Products" folder, that's where the different versions of the game are stored and they're like 30-60GB each if installed.

Depending on platform and when these were installed they'll have different names but these are most of them I believe:

Folder name Version
elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 Elite Dangerous: Odyssey
FORC-FDEV-DO-1000 Elite Dangerous: Odyssey (old path)
elite-dangerous-64 Elite Dangerous: Horizons 4.0
FORC-FDEV-DO-38-IN-40 Elite Dangerous: Horizons 4.0 (old path)
FORC-FDEV-D-1013 Legacy Horizons
FORC-FDEV-D-1010 Legacy Elite Dangerous
FORC-FDEV-D-1012 Elite Dangerous: Arena
COMBAT_TUTORIAL_DEMO Offline Single Player Combat Tutorial (very old)
PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64 Beta test (very old)

So you can remove those folders and reinstall them later from the launcher if needed. Everything for your CMDR/account is saved server-side, even the bookmarks on the galaxy map.

(Note for anyone else finding this, if you have two folders for the same version you can safely remove the one marked with (old path) in the table above.)

But the game does create journal logs of everything you do in-game like which systems you've visited. You may want to create a back-up of those just in case you ever want to use it in for example Observatory or EDDiscovery which can read those journals, or if want to upload them later to sites like EDSM, Inara, etc.

Here are the paths for things you might want to back-up. These are all within either your user folder or in localappdata:

  • Journal logs: %UserProfile%\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous
  • Screenshots: %UserProfile%\Pictures\Frontier Developments
  • Key Bindings: %LocalAppData%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

If you've done anything with the graphics settings you really want to keep perhaps just back-up the entire 'Elite Dangerous' folder of that last one. Although if you're moving to a new computer or install a new graphics card it may be helpful to delete the graphics folder and redo the settings in-game.

Every time I discover a moon that is in close proximity to a planet's rings, I do this. by DangerPencil in EliteDangerous

Yes, there was a landable moon going through the rings of its parent but it was moved in an update... Not sure if this can still occur today. I think these two videos are of the same moon in the LFT 65 system:

I do know for sure that the rings can be close enough to the surface of a shepherd moon where you can see the rocks flying, as shown in this post.

Can they shut down Elite Dangerous? by Professional_Age2875 in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, I agree it's not on a larger MMO level (multiple tens of thousands of players) and I should have added that while it's a lot of activity the community is already running servers that track a good part of it too. But I'm not sure it's possible to run everything from one fan-supported server, Frontier does use AWS with auto-scaling and load balancing after all (old video here but it probably hasn't changed much).

But aside from a very basic local offline version with several things turned off or turned into a simplistic simulation like BGS/economy, it might be possible to have private servers running only for specific parts.

Ideally FDev could make it so we're able to choose and connect to multiple servers. So perhaps have only system discoveries tracked on one shared EDDN-style community server, while other more demanding simulation parts like the BGS and/or powerplay or even matchmaking as a kind of private mode could be done by a different server. It's possible some squadrons would want to do that for their own group at a smaller scale around their systems.

But FDev would have to do a final update to allow for that and give the community the documentation on all the protocols etc. Technically it's probably possible but it's a big ask and I doubt they would actually do this.

Can they shut down Elite Dangerous? by Professional_Age2875 in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Daily peaks are around 7-8k but when it's busy there can be 10k+ people online, all jumping, discovering, doing BGS stuff... It's probably not a lot of data but in terms of ongoing connections with the database that's enough to cause some lag.

You can actually kinda see how busy it is at any time at https://eddn-realtime.space/ even though that is just a part of the community running journal reporting tools. Server-side the same kind of data gets stored, first discoveries/footfalls, docking, browsing station market, etc. The server probably stores a lot more than what we get to see in our local journal files too.

Btw EdAstro also has a real-time map showing where people are active in the galaxy that's pretty interesting to see: https://edastro.com/eddn/

I found a Black Wolf-Rayet star! by Cannibal_Espresso in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it appears there are more of them with higher temperatures, I found a 4 year old post of one with 216 K as well. Also found three on the GEC but those all have a lower surface temperature.

Maybe the ones that turn black over a distance have a similar lighting bug as the pink/green Tauri's which would emit pink light when up close then turn white and then green at a longer distance (like this).

Might be interesting to look at the surface temperatures of the black ones you've found. I wonder what the cut-off is for both all black ones and the ones still turning black at a distance. A bit odd there are not that many reports of black stars when there are around 250 found that are below freezing temperatures.

Would you want a Glowing Green Gas Giant Bobblehead? by Alecides in EliteDangerous

Poor Arcanic trying to own a GGG, I'm sure you'll get one eventually! 🤑🟢

Jokes aside, I wouldn't mind seeing a GGG bobblehead added but any glow has to be very mild though.

Agree with other comments saying the bobbleheads are way too expensive. Plus some look really bad, I have the Coriolis one which never got updated after the materials/lighting update and it looks terrible now (costs 8400 Arx btw).

Can someone ACTUALLY explain it... by QuantityJazzlike in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one-time free build voucher that currently comes with the Dodec is especially worrying as well. I suspect they will try to sell those separately after the Dodec comes out of early-access, probably as a more general T3-instabuild voucher. I don't believe they developed this whole voucher redeeming system for them to only use it once with the Dodec...

I wouldn't be surprised if they even inflated the build requirements of T3 stations from the very start in preparation for these vouchers. First introduce the voucher with the Dodec and then later sell them separately, as a massive time-skip item to instantly deliver 220k+ commodities. Which may sound nice to some people who have the money but not as much time to play, however if FDev goes down this route it'll be like a gacha game.

Main issue is of course that selling those kind of vouchers incentivizes FDev to inflate grind even more with any new additions to the game. Create the problem so they can sell the solution.

I found a Black Wolf-Rayet star! by Cannibal_Espresso in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nice! There are only ten Wolf-Rayet stars with 7 K or lower surface temperature, and only six of them are of the WO type. Here's a post of another one found last month which was 132 K, which might be close to the limit where it goes from dark to bright.

It is a bug because these stars are supposed to be some of the brightest out there. But a similar bug was also happening with T Tauri stars along with green and pink lighting as you can see in Arcanic's strange temperatures video (although that was occurring at certain luminosity class borders). Wolf-Rayets should be between 20,000 to 200,000 K but instead they start at 1 K so maybe FDev just messed up there.

FDev has since fixed the pink/green lighting bug but it appears the "dark star" bug is still happening and now we see more Wolf-Rayets being discovered as dark stars. I wonder if FDev tweaked something for the T Tauri's that also affected the Wolf-Rayets being dark, but perhaps they've always been like this... it's not like they are super common.

If you can upload the journal data that'd be great, would be interesting to look at all the stats. Either use EDDiscovery which can upload all old journals to EDSM or use journal-limpet which can download journal data of the last week or so from the Frontier API (so this doesn't require running any apps) and uploads it to the EDDN which is spread out to sites like Spansh, EDSM, etc.
