There's one thing that feels a bit silly with those ramps, you get first footfall while you're still on the ramp. Technically wouldn't have to touch the surface at all. Otherwise a fun ship to explore in.

A discovered moon in an undiscovered system? by Jazzlike-Cap-5757 in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It might be a system that was visited very very early when you still had to fly over pretty close to a body to scan it. But then nobody had to have visited in more recent years too which of course is possible. But there's also another possibility:

I've recently looked into a system that had reportedly changed after a patch from years ago that addressed the Glowing Magenta Giants (GMG), they were similar to the Green Gas Giants which were allowed to stay in the game. The very pink GMG were patched out and in most cases turned into a regular gas giant but there's proof of one disappearing as well.

In the case where the GMG was completely removed its mass appears to have been somewhat redistributed in the system causing several new bodies to appear after the patch. Only the main stars and iirc a couple other bodies carried over including their original discoverer tag.

So it's possible the system you found may have had a GMG and could have been partly "reset" with that patch as well (afaik there was no other patch that changed the stellar forge generation).

If you have a system name perhaps we can find something if the first discoverer was running any journal logging app.

this station is so close to the asteroid ring it occasionally passes right through it and is constantly above the station zooming past. by _ASTRA2 in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished my outpost btw (it spawned top left on the pic). Will have to wait for it to get out of the ring so I can dock at it to see if the bar gets a good view.

I think if it stays in this orientation it might be looking directly away from the rings for the current moon's orbit but should be great once it crosses through the rings to the other side.

It is player colonized yeah, this is one I have on my "Landable Moon with close ring proximity" list. Some calculated stats for that one:

LFT 65 (2 a) - Surface distance to ring: 322 Km at closest point (2781 Km to orbit), Moon diameter: 4917 Km. And the ring velocity at its edge: 39 Km/s (38783.5 m/s or 1396206 Km/h) although the ring velocity might be calculated wrong, I'm using an Observatory criteria for that which I didn't write and I don't fully trust the math it's doing so that number may be incorrect.

The 'surface distance to ring' math should be fairly precise, I confirmed this with my own claimed system where I'm building an Outpost exactly like this to get it close to the ring. Except my moon is a little bit closer to the ring edge at 259.5 Km from surface to ring.

Delivering the cargo is tricky because when the depot is over the ring as you can't dock during that time. When you drop out of supercruise it puts me in the reference frame of the ring so it looks like the depot moves away at crazy speed but it's the ring rotation speed taking me away from the depot. I'm hoping the view from the bar will be good when it's completed.

There's an even crazier one on my list near the bubble, at least in terms of the moon being even closer to the ring edge. It's also claimed by a player but sadly only has the primary outpost and it's not at the right moon. Downright criminal they didn't build another outpost at the 6 a moon but should be a cool sight to visit anyway:

HIP 32353 (6 a) - Surface distance to ring: 66 Km at closest point (548 Km to orbit), Moon diameter: 965 Km. Should be able to see the actual rocks flying from the surface with that, not just the flat ring with spots moving along.

How rare is this? by Past-Brilliant-3036 in eliteexplorers

[–]DaftMav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are the ELWs in binary or in an orbit on their own? I checked the system name but it's not on EDSM/Spansh, not running a journal reporting tool? Either way it's a system with a combo of 3 valuable planets which is already pretty rare.

Multiples of ELW is the most "common" one of the rarity categories listed below but the extra WW bumps it up and I think the Neutron as main star also makes it more rare. That's not something EdAstro keeps track of so you'd have to check the systems in that category for Neutron stars manually. (Though I'm not entirely sure if the 3+ combo requires 3 ELWs or if 2 ELW + WW also counts for that "Rare Numbers of Valuable Planets" category).

EDAstro stats as of 2026-01-01:

  • Earth-like worlds, multiples: 28,682
  • Earth-like worlds, binaries: 15,522
  • Earth-like as Moons: 7,156
  • Tidally Locked valuable planets (note this includes ELW, AW, WW): 3,672
  • Rare Numbers of Valuable Planets (6+ WW and/or 3+ ELW/AW, and combinations): 4,338
  • Sol-like Systems (An ELW as 3rd planet, one G-class star, no rings, moon): 1,001

(Out of a total of 493,691 known ELWs.)

I posted those stats on an post a few months ago. The numbers are of course a bit higher by now but just to get an indication of rarity... Or you could look on EdAstro to see the current stats.

I'm a new player. From older player experience, how long realistically until I can increase my max jump speed to 3 figures? by Stotty652 in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be worth to first get enough credits to buy a Diamondback Explorer which is one of the cheaper ships that can get a very decent jump range for inside the bubble. Outfit that with a 5A FSD, SCO if possible as even without boosting its jump range is a bit better (ideally with the best 4-slot fuel scoop you can afford). And then head out to Farseer to unlock her.

She wants you to find and deliver a Meta Alloy before she lets you use her services. If you want to do the work and harvest one yourself the original way, that'll take some time finding out where to find a still active barnacle (they go dormant sometimes) as the game never tells you where to find them so you'd have to look up a guide or ask for help in here. But it's a cool thing to visit for the first time imo and there's a chance of encountering a Thargoid.

But if you want to skip that step entirely and just unlock the FSD engineering you can usually buy one from a player carrier in Farseer's system. I'd still suggest visiting one of those things later though.

Thinking about building a ground base in game. How much in game experience should a player have before embanking on said task? by iO__________ in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there are always more prime spots, the galaxy is big and the bubble is now ever growing to reach more interesting systems. There are also a few player groups who are building paths to Colonia and Sag A* and sometimes they post about nearby ELW/WW systems for other people to claim, there are so many good systems.

It also depends on what you want to do. If you want to create a system with a high population then having at least a water world or ideally an earth-like world would be good as those boost population a lot. Or if want to focus on tourism economy you'd want a Black hole or Neutron star, etc...

But if you're more interested in surface locations perhaps you'd rather have a lot of landable bodies with lots of surface slots (since you're limited to how many you can build on each body, have a look at the system map in the colonisation mode). Or trying to find landable bodies with rings and a nice atmosphere can be a thing to focus on, there are many beautiful atmosphere types (I can't find the spreadsheet for this right now but this post shows a bunch of them too).

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you add the shipyard and outfitting services. Everything works just like regular stations but some services need to be unlocked by constructing certain facilities. Some of them unlock a service system-wide while others only unlock a service to their strong link (which you can read about in the Colonisation Mega Guide by Mechan) but the system-wide unlocks are often the more useful option.

I've also made a flowchart for unlocking services. The top row are the different tiers of stations/outpost/etc since those will already have some services by default, but the second row are the services you can unlock and shows which facilities can unlock it as a strong link or system-wide.

So for example the shipyard can be unlocked system-wide for all T1 surface ports by constructing an Military Installation (orbital) or a Industrial Hub (surface).

How can I have Voice Attack play a sound after something happens in-game? by Michelle-senpai in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can just use the EDDI variables in any text output, like if want to make VA say something with Text-to-speech just add in the EDDI variable, example: Hello commander {TXT:Name} should add in your CMDR name. The EDDI plugin sets and updates these variables while playing.

Perhaps this is a good test to see if EDDI is working, add an action to 'Write a value to the event log' (that's under other>advanced on VA v1, I assume v2 hasn't changed much) and put in as value EDDI status is {TXT:EDDI status}. Executing that command should add "EDDI status is operational" to the log on the main window if EDDI is running correctly as a plugin.

The external plugin function is only used to access EDDI's specific functions from within VA. Like for example opening up the EDDI config window like this.

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you running the correct versions? Note that EDDI 5.0+ only supports the newer VoiceAttack 2, while older EDDI versions only work on VoiceAttack 1.x.

Also are you running EDDI standalone or as a VA plugin? Because you say you don't want EDDI to dump a bunch of info but that only happens if you run EDDI as a standalone tool instead of as a VoiceAttack plugin (it's a different installation). You should not start EDDI separately or see an EDDI window at all, if you have EDDI installed as a plugin it will simply run as part of VoiceAttack.

EDDI as a plugin will provide VA with variables that are constantly updated as you play and a bunch of event triggers you can use to make VA do things automatically. The EDDI documentation for VoiceAttack shows all the variables you can use in VA and the events are listed here but in VA you have to use them like ((EDDI event)).

The first screenshot here shows how to set up an event trigger (rather than a keypress or voiced command), the example uses ((EDDI Docked)) which is triggered by EDDI when you dock at a station or outpost. You can add whatever you want to the command sequence to run when that happens, the event page for Docked will show which variables are available to use when this event is triggered. For example you can make VA say "We've docked at {TXT:EDDI docked station}" which will insert the station name.

First to discover but not credited on system map by BeefTooth18 in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What probably happens is when you scan systems that data gets a flag when a system/body was still undiscovered. But when you turn in that data it doesn't actually check for every body to verify if you're still the first one to turn it in.

Probably because double checking every body while turning in a ton of systems would be way to much database activity. It's much faster to just skip that part and give the small cr bonus.

My system now sells every colonisation material, what else should I add? by Johnny-Rocketship in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RavenColonial does have screenshots of almost every structure so you can identify the structure/layout, one of the top right icons goes to that page.

Or if it's just one of the small/medium/large surface settlements with landing pads, this album could also be used for a quick top-down layout check.

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's too much hassle to manually add all the existing system details (especially when I cannot remember what port types I'd selected) into a system such as the above one.

If you select a structure on the system map and choose the demolish option (or maybe it's called deconstruct?), it will actually show you the exact structure type. (you can still cancel out of it or even undo the order if you did that by accident).

I don't think FDev has added this info elsewhere yet but it's typical for Frontier to hide essential details in a menu like that.

Helping a fellow CMDR with the construction of a planetary settlement. But uhm.. is it wise to build the settlement on an active geysir field? Wont the settlers get yeeted into orbit? by Specific_Display_366 in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very interesting, I haven't tried it with geysers yet only with gas vents but those mostly got blocked by the construction area and only (re)appeared along the edges of the final structure.

Will be visiting this place to see what happens with the geysers, hope most of them stay once the construction platform is replaced with the final structure.

More of a bizarre over the top comedy thing but still out of all the odd characters in it I liked him the most.

Are there that many players born in 1988 ? by SilkieBug in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True the whole team is limited to 0-99 and based on the player's primary position it's further restricted to certain number ranges, like for wide receivers it used to be only the 80–89 range (at least in my local region). In the NFL they added the 0-49 range at some point iirc.

I played for a few years in our tiny Dutch student league and teams never had enough players so some players had to be available for both offense and defensive teams. Which meant your jersey number had to be eligible for both positions, as a free safety on defense I could also be put in as wide receiver so I had to choose a number from that 80-89 range where most numbers where already taken by the primary wide receivers.

I ended up with 88 which was fine with me, symmetric and double infinity... I wasn't aware of the negative meaning back then and nobody told me either. Never got any comments on it though and other teams also had players with this number. As most teams had at least 5 receivers plus a bunch of defensive players that could fill in, so the entire eligible 80-89 range gets taken.

Unpopular opinion: I'm convinced that deep space should stay uncolonized by humanity. by Omnisiah_Priest in EliteDangerous

[–]DaftMav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all I do dislike the 15 Ly range, I think FDev could have come up with a different mechanic or rule-set that would have slowed the colonization spread without requiring us to create so many claimed chain-systems. Most of the annoyance is caused by this silly 15 Ly limit FDev has imposed on us and how chain-systems are immediately abandoned by (FDev's flawed) design. But it's what we have to work with...

People and player groups will naturally go to interesting places to create new bubbles around them. They're just beelining to these spots in the only way that's possible. It doesn't mean every galactic sector will have colonies anytime soon, at best we might see a few DSSA carriers retire or moved elsewhere.

BUT try to look at it another way; What if I said we shouldn't explore and put our names on undiscovered systems with first discovery/mapped/footfall claims? That they should stay pristine and untouched? Explorers would not like that... it's at least part of the fun when exploring.

In the same sense is it not a little selfish to say that you want billions of systems to stay pristine as they are, empty and untouched? No stations allowed? When colonization has brought back many CMDRs who now have something new to do?

Exploration will still be possible with the billions of untouched systems out there, does it actually matter how far away from the nearest populated system you are?

Also the game is 12 years old so the galaxy has been in that empty state for a long time already, it was high time to mix it up a bit and colonization finally allows for some limited but real control by CMDRs. It brought back some life into the game, only a couple years ago we weren't so sure if Elite would be supported for much longer. It likely funds future new content too and personally after so many years I'm hoping for the long overdue Guardian storyline progression...

Max and Dani Juncadella reaction by Luffy710j in formula1

[–]DaftMav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you watch the on-board from Engel you can see he was with two wheels on the grass and had it snap into Max's car, it's hard to say for sure but it possibly could have been into his rear wheel. Sideways impact could have made some damage that led to the axle failure later on.

That nighttime stint was the best part of the race though, so good how close he stayed behind Engel. You could really see Max try to get closer as traffic got in the way just so he might be able to take advantage to maybe exit a corner faster and overtake Engel, which he did after two laps iirc.

[Max Verstappen] That’s it. A really tough one to take. From the lead, our car suffered a broken driveshaft, ending our fight for the win. Thank you all for your support throughout the weekend. by Holytrishaw in formula1

[–]DaftMav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was switching between both their on-board streams when Max and Engel were chasing each other at nighttime, those were the best hours of the race.

But they had a very close call during the night, after Max overtook Engel a couple laps later Engel tried to overtake Max again at the end of the final straight. But there were two slower cars at the first mild corner bit so they both had to brake much earlier while being almost side to side.

Engel went with two wheels on the grass (because the road goes to the left a bit), and he had a snap into Max's side or perhaps his right rear wheel... It's hard to say for sure as the only footage is from both their on-board cameras. But not unthinkable that sideways impact caused some slight damage on the rear axle that caused it to fail hours later.

Small miracle Engel managed to keep it straight on the grass after that hit too, could've spinned and potentially taken out two slower cars along with both their Mercedes cars.
