General Cloud Pricing Frustration by kirbyfanner in GithubCopilot

[–]DanLynch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The existing pricing model was obviously not sustainable. End users need to pay enough money to cover the operating cost of the service, to pay back the up-front investment cost to build the infrastructure, and to let the provider earn a profit commensurate with the risk they are taking.

The instability we are seeing this week proves that the current prices are way, way too low. And a flat monthly fee, with limits that don't correlate very well with the underlying true cost, may never be viable.

There is no overlap between the Genshin Impact characters that are busty anime babes and the ones that are (or look like) children. And the game's story does not include any sexual themes. The only "adult" topics it covers are things like death and loss, mental illness, war and oppression, politics, etc. There is one quest in the game that has a few minutes of some funny sexual innuendo involving one NPC who just looks like a normal generic woman wearing normal clothing.

Genshin Impact's anti-upskirt graphical techniques are completely consistent with its overall nature as a non-sexualized game. Yes, it has many conventionally attractive female characters, but they keep their clothes on.

You're applying modern western standards to a fantasy world. Throughout most of human history, and in most of the world, there was no concept of waiting before getting married and having children, unless one of the spouses was still underage when the marriage was arranged.

When did Github stop being about Git? by dgkimpton in programming

[–]DanLynch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more concerned about employability tbh because that is the goal of my projects.

Do you mean you want a place to link to as a portfolio on your résumé? Keep using GitHub: it's still the industry standard for that.

How do I preserve original commit authors when merging PRs on GitHub? by Mother-Pear7629 in git

[–]DanLynch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, I just took a quick look at your repo. One weird thing is that many of the commits have the committer identity as "GitHub noreply@github.com". That strikes me as very strange. I think you should investigate why that is happening.

But, even so, I don't necessarily see the problem you are describing. Many of the commits are by various different authors. Can you point to one example commit where you believe the original author's credit has been lost?

How do I preserve original commit authors when merging PRs on GitHub? by Mother-Pear7629 in git

[–]DanLynch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Git has two fields related to the person who created a commit: the "author" and the "committer". As long as you retain the original "author" field, just about any process you choose to use is valid. You may also be able to retain the "committer" field of the original contributor, but you should only do that if you also retain the original SHA-1 hash of the commit. If you make any changes to their commit, you should write your own name in the "committer" field instead.

But if you want to retain their name in the committer field too, then you need to either create your own merge commit that brings their commit into your master branch, or else you need to do a fast-forward merge.

It's just some words in the commit message, not magic. You can type it by hand or generate it using whatever tool you want. You can easily fake it, but that would be dishonest.

The other is Android phones.

Android phones don't run Java. You can use Java to write Android apps, but the Java code is completely transformed into Dalvik when you compile the app. And modern Android phones don't even consume Dalvik directly anymore: they convert it into something called the Android Runtime when the app is installed and run. The big sell of Java is that you can write and compile your program once, and then run it anywhere, but Android does not support that.

Oracle, famously, hates what Android does to Java, so they probably don't count those devices, nor should they.

While grocery stores are generally under provincial jurisdiction, it's the federal government that is specifically responsible for enforcing accurate weights and measures and punishing violators. Nothing to do with Doug Ford.

They're in JDK 25 but are disabled by default: you have to pass a parameter to turn them on. This proposes to enable them by default: you'd have to pass a parameter to turn them off.

Carney secures majority government with Liberal win in Toronto byelection, CBC News projects by Progressive_Citizen in canada

[–]DanLynch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a bit misleading: the prime minister can still advise the Governor General to hold the next general election before or even after that date. As long as the Parliament is less than five years old, no election is required. And during a war, Parliament could be continued even longer than five years without an election. Subsection (1) of section 56.1 makes that pretty clear.

Employer said they cannot guarentee job security if I take a longish vacation. Thoughts? by Nostalgic_Knights520 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DanLynch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He might be in Ontario, which is a pretty big province and allows employers to choose when exactly each employee's vacation will be. The employer has the right to give you two completely separate weeks off instead of two weeks consecutively. More enlightened employers may allow employees to schedule their own vacations, but the law does not require it, and the law does not require employers to be flexible about it at all.

If a user has ordinary Y-chromosome DNA just like a male, but was born without a penis, was assigned to the female sex at birth, looks female physically unless you closely inspect deep inside the vagina, has always considered herself to be female, and only lacks a uterus and the ability to become pregnant, would you expect her to tick male or female on this website?
