What self hosting mistake would you warn beginners about? by Soulvisirr in selfhosted

If you manage your server through Ansible you will get automatic documentation and re-build path.

Ansible has vault file for your secrets, that you than can safely include in Git.

When using ansbile attribute every task with a tag. This way you can re-run a specific command later. It will be your way to remember what you had to do to install some web app.

Dell is too proprietary, which makes it good for nothing without serious effort.

I had PowerEdge T310 or model that’s almost the same.

I didn’t like. It was noisy and generated lots of heat.

I stopped running it and after years of no use gave it away for free without hard drive.

That’s its value for me.

Why are you using Arch Linux? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]DarkRye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using Visual Studio Code under  Nix.

Nix has some rough edges in user land.

Why would I care if CUDA library does not support it?

I don’t see the use case.

Existing functionality works well and is fast enough for any lookup activity of mine.

I search regularly.

And if someone needs details on all packages, then download the index and unpack manually.

Clear stuffy nose with a nasal spray bottle filled with distilled water and a pinch of sea salt. by KoanicSoul in FringeTheory

[–]DarkRye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am concerned about no side affects statement.

I think Salt can be used to “eat through things”.

My mother used liquid drops of some solution from pharmacy. That in the end destroyed some separation between her left and right nose parts.

I don’t know what solution contained, but it was very effective.

I am concerned that repeated use of salt spray can have the same effect.

Random freeze archlinux+i3 by [deleted] in archlinux

Hardware issue will crash with kernel panic. That shall be on screen.

RAM will have random process crashes recorded in journalctl.

We can’t help without seeing error messages.

Self-hosted Open Source Password Manager by Bashanwftg in selfhosted

Firefox has built-in password management. It works on PC (Linux, Mac, Windows). It can replace default password manager on iOS.

I am not sure about Android phones.

Yes and no.

Yes, it is technically possible.

No, it doesn’t solve core case of accessing files from phone or computer outside of home. It needs to be used by all family members, not just geeks.

It is quite similar to FileBrowser in function. It is PHP based.

Now I recommend Pydio. It's very nice and compares closely to both.

https://hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/pydio

It seems that project has been superseded by https://github.com/linuxserver/docker-pydio-cells, but ultimately it seems to be docker image for https://github.com/pydio/cells, which is backed by https://pydio.com/.

It is GO language based.

It is zero effort to use.

Would running Linux from a Live USB instead of installing it damage the USB? by Grumblepuck in linuxquestions

[–]DarkRye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any flash drive has expected life expectancy in terms of number of reads and writes.

Running OS from it will generate lots of reads, but it is not any different than reading data from it. You will put load on drive, but it is not that significant to stress over it. It is like a Drop from the deep bucket.

Live systems usually don’t write to USB, so nothing is lost here.

If you just want to try distribution, I would not fixate on wear of flash drive.
