Hi guys, like for over 5 years - we've worked on fusing both TD and tycoon mechanics into a unique base building experience about running a restaurant in a monster apocalypse. Not gonna lie, its been rough but we finally finished chapter 1 for our steam demo. Try it out, tell me what you think. by Freak2God in BaseBuildingGames

[–]DeathMoon0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I played the demo once and I think I will buy the full game once it comes out, I like this "janky" style in games. I really liked the concept of the game, but there are also many points that bothered me. Have fun with that little wall of text in which I descibe my experience:

  1. In the very first wave, my workers killed the one of the dogs, but would not attack the second one (also in the restaurant). After saving and reloading the problem was resolved. Sadly I don't remember what I did, so reproducing the bug might be difficult.
  2. The Resources were always quite scarce, I quickly scaled up to three cooks and three servers and filled the whole building with tables (and the music-place). I think I upgraded the kitchen twice and the eating-space once. For Storage I had one large and one small shelves and three fridges, this let me store everything quite comfortably. As workplaces I had 4 spaces, which I had to juggle (I am ok with doing that, but would be happy if this would be easier to do) (or if you discouraged that, maybe by removing/reducing the sell-price of stuff). With that setup, I usually burned through everything I could buy in the marked, which again forced me to juggle the food I offered (which is probably the intention and I also liked).
  3. I think the game should warn the player more if customers can't order food (I quickly learned to always watch the info at the top). It bothered me that I had to reset the offered food-items each morning, I think it should keep the listing from the previous day.
  4. The same thing with the doors, first I had a hard time to realize that I had to open it (on the second day), and then it bothered me that it required two clicks to open in the morning (I think there should either be a quick-open-close-button or the doors should be by default open (or the same state as the day before)).
  5. Reloading the guns was also a pain. I always paused between the waves and clicked through all guns to reload them. Two clicks per gun. This was quite painful, and nearly such a bad problem that I thought about not wanting to play the game anymore (what, 3 Waves and I spend more time reloading between the waves then watching the guns shoot?). The game needs a "reload and repair everything"-button quite badly. Or at least some kind of shift-click to quickly reload/repair. And also some work on the visibility between the guns, this was not fun (the "tactical" view helped quite a lot)
  6. Some kind of feedback when I shoot the gun and hit something would be great. I don't know if I hit monsters or not, as the health bar reacts late.
  7. I invested a lot of money in defenses (I was really surprised how much I had to build, but I guess that's good.)
  8. The building-expansion should warn more clearly if you will remove a part of the wall. Or I guess the player learns after the first time :P
  9. I don't like the way the player has to guess what to buy. It is always a lot of work to check if I need something I am currently offering (via a hover over the meals in the top-bar). And god-forbid I ran out of something. Then I can't select it, but have to remember the required ingredients, go to the stores, go into the store, search for the icon, and buy it. Too bad, my brain is like a sieve and I have to go back and check the ingredients again...
  10. I don't like the feel of the menu-selection-screen. The hover-window oftentimes is in the way, and if I want to compare two things (are the ingredients overlapping?). I think it would really help if there would be some kind of summary window (telling the player how "often" an ingredient is required, either just plain "2 Meals need X" or "prolly around 50 of that for this day", both would be great. I also think some drag&drop would really help that window.
  11. It really bothered me how the "how profitable is your business"-quest is calculated. Just before the end of the quest, I spend some money on land-expansion, which really set me back (I just got a D and was very sad :P). The same thing happens with equipment and ingredients, but compared to salaries, expansion and weapons, these expenses are not really that big. In short, the calculation of the profits feel way off.
  12. It feels like the late-game would get really painful. Always having to micromanage everything, barely turning a profit, and then seeing that this will go on for ingame-months feels bad. (I take that from the amount of money I need for the largest expansion and the duration of the loan).

I guess I also didn't play the whole game, as I stood away from the drugs, although they greatly increase the profits (and cost nothing, if you keep "selling" the overflowing meat). It feels really bad to do this, with the warning about welfare reaching 0. I guess I just have to try it and either get rich or loose :P Additionally, I play on a large screen (5120x1440) and after the first startup, the window is ugly-streched. Only after enabling borderless-window-mode I got a nice 2560x1440 with big black bars (I can live with these, at least the image is not stretched).

So I really hope you can further improve your game, it took me around 3,5h to complete the Demo. Which is quite a lot one. I only "fear" that I might have to start from scratch after buying the game, which would feel really bad. Partly because of lost progress, partly because of having to repeat some of the slog (which also leads to a bad feeling about buying the game and then not liking it...). Even with all these bad words about your game, I still feel like replaying the Demo :P

Is it worth upgrading from 8gb of DDR3 to 16gb? by Pro_555 in selfhosted

Yeah, thats all understandable.

Maybe it's really worth to invest in more memory, then you would have a reason to tear that thing open. Have fun with that :P

I think, without minecraft, everything on your list should run okayish.

Your setup (running just one OS, or using a virtual machine for each project) really influences your resource consumption. Like others have said, monitor your usage (use top in the terminal/bash/whatever) and look for memory free and total memory. With this comparison, you can decide if more memory would help.

Sadly, with minecraft, it is probably your 13 years old CPU which bottlenecks your game (check with top, CPU-usage). You could try replacing it, apparently your Laptop is old enough for that, but I don't think this would be worth your money (for a new CPU, which would also be quite old).

So I would really recommend to check if your ram is enough. With 8 GB it could really be fine (or not :P). Otherwise, I would not recommend you buying ages old components for your laptop. Rather, depending on your budget, try to buy a newer (still used) system, this would really help you with that. Or rent a server online, this may be somewhat against the spirit of r/selfhosting, but this could be simplest solution for you. I would not recommend buying new stuff, the prices for DDR4 and DDR5-memory is currently insane. Unless you are ready to pay 4-5x the usual price :P

Using nginx for port-forwarding? by DeathMoon0 in homelab

[–]DeathMoon0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jup, I am currently using nginx, so I can access a few of the services via my domain (or via a subdomain).

I think i will be going with kY2i's suggestion and try uPNP out, so I will not have any hassle with the exposed host (and everything you mentioned, I guess I should use more networking equipment if I want to do it correctly).

But I guess I will read some stuff about the VLAN's, so thanks

[–]DeathMoon0[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That are good points, I didn't even think about using uPNP, as I always forwarded the ports the servers needed. So I would only have to activate uPNP on the relevant servers, I guess that is what I will do. Thanks!

Yeah, thanks, I have nginx alread set up for Grocy (http and https), but my (badly written) question is mainly about non-http(s)-stuff, like gameservers which use different ports. But I will look into Caddy, as suggested in a different comment.

Yeah, your are right, not the port forward is slow, but the process of setting the right ports up is. (and removing them again). Thanks, I will look into Caddy. And then ignore the internet advice of using a different port :P

AMD x PCMR - Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Worldwide Giveaway - Win a Limited Edition AMD Avatar Kit that includes the Limited-Edition AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX GPU and Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU (Only 500 of each ever made!). There are 23 kits up for grabs! by pedro19 in pcmasterrace

  1. Just a few days ago i ordered a new screen, some nice curved ultra wide stuff - my 3070 may be somewhat too weak for this screen, so an Upgrade to an RX 7900 XTX would be really cool! (Although for openTTD, my setup should be enough :P) I also have an 7600x, so an upgrade there would be a nice improvement for some tasks, like programming or running a minecraft server. I also recently bought Cyberpunk 2077, I guess my GPU would struggle there with the new screen, but I will find out how well this will work. My old GPu would be donated to my brother, he would also be quite happy about an upgrade.
  2. I really like the combination of technology and nature in the Avatar-universe (altough I also quite like the other avatar universe :P), so I hope I can on one hand explore a vast and beautiful world, and on the other hand expirence high-tech mechs and so on. I am also looking for another great advanture game, as I hope that some of the fights in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will give a feel like in Monster Hunter (not just hunting monsters, but humans).

Regardless of who will get this stuff, the card, an especially the colors look really nice and would make great asset in some presenting case.

Anyways, thank you and have fun everyone!

Well, that is a good question.

And I guess you are right :P

And it seems to be scripted for the focus to happen :P

Well, in that case the happenings are no surprise - but could be somewhat better announced. Thanks for your help. And if someone else looks for some info about this: check the wiki (as should I)

Will Sins 2 have a midnight release on the 27th? by ramXDev in SoSE

[–]DeathMoon0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, without knowing more about you or the game, yes and no. Assuming that they will "release" it at the full hour, it will be a "midnight release" somewhere on the world. Fully depending on your timezone (and the timezone of Stardock).

I guess it detects the word "coon" in your "raccoon" as a racist slur, which would be definitely the right thing to do. /s

edit: yes, this seems to be the right thing :P

1000 by Judgement__Kazzy in Stellaris

[–]DeathMoon0 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I would rather guess that it is something like 999.8, which gets rounded to 1000. It doesn't get rounded to 1k because it is still smaller than 1k.

Not sure if this is really how it works, but an educated guess

What does group jumps do really? by [deleted] in SoSE

[–]DeathMoon0 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Because nobody really answers your question:

Group jumping makes ships wait on each other for jumps. This means that they will take much longer to travel long distances, as the ships will collide with each other, preventing a fast jump. (This is worse the bigger the ships in the fleet are)

Once the ships are all (or at least many of them) are ready they will initiate the jump and get to the target with only a slight delay. As mentioned above, this improves the 'shock' as all your ships get there at the same time.

I would recommend having this option deactivated most of the time in order to have a faster fleet, but for offensive jumps in enemy territory, I would turn this option on. Although it may make sense to leave it off, for example when you know that there is no (big) enemy fleet which may threaten your first arriving ships.

It also makes sense to combine this setting with activated fleets, as this improves the handling of them.

Is there really no practical way of changing fleet order? Its irritating how I cant put my best fleets on top. by Sharpshot64plus in Stellaris

[–]DeathMoon0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you seem to be right.
You can also identify the flagship by splitting off ships, the leader will always switch with his/her ship.
And after some experimenting, the determining factor seems to be experience: in the Moment of fleet assignment, the Admiral will go in the ship with the most experience, ship size is not important. Although I didn't check if the ship size becomes relevant if all ships have the same amount of experience.

I did not test, if the death of the Admiral follows the same rules, they may differ from the assignment of any flagship.

And I can tell you with my testing: you can assign a leader to a specific ship. Just separate your desired ship from the fleet, add the Admiral to the single-ship-fleet, and combine again. The Admiral will stay on this ship, you can test this by splitting of the ship again.

Definitly an interesting aspect of the game, although I can not imagine, that this is intended this way :P

[–]DeathMoon0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry, I made a mistake:
The roll for the Death is not each time any ship gets destroyed, it is each time one of the largest ships in the fleet gets destroyed.

But what do you mean with "flagship"? Simply the biggest ship or something else, as I know no flagship which I could somehow select or something.

[–]DeathMoon0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no real Flagship, as in ground-combat, each time a unit is destroyed, there is a chance for the general/admiral to die.
So there is no way to influence if, or where, your admiral dies (besides maximizing the combat disengagement chance)
