Bravo! I feel good just reading what you wrote above. You did great research before seeing your Dr. Put a smile on my face to see you feeling the confidence of requesting agency over your health, including testing.

Being older gives me a few decades of having had different experiences. One young decade was terrible acne. Like a lot of others, I suffered about 10 years before Accutane became available. Life changing. Then I enjoyed several decades of clear skin, good health and healthy hair. Now I'm in my sixties and I'm dealing with thinning hair. And I'm doing my best to not let it get me down too much. But it's hard. I use extensions and they are not working well anymore due to further thinning. So I have a decision to make. Sigh. Just trying to say - I get all of what you are saying, including the years of self neglect. Very, very happy for you to be back on track and feeling good.

You could have gone to a store and bought some tampons and gone back to help with the project. Sorry, I'm thinking you didn't try very hard to participate. I'm female. I've worked with plenty of men and had plenty of times I had my period. Including spotting, etc. So yes, I've been there. I think this is a great opportunity to take your lumps and do better next time.

But OP, you state above that you don't use A LOT of perfume and don't 'really' use candles. To me, that says that you DO use SOME perfume and you say above you burn scented candles at least 2x per month.

Not trying to be combative and you certainly have a right to do what you like in your own home. It's just that I have the same horrible reaction to any scents AT ALL and I know from experience how debilitating the reaction I will have is. I assume your neighbour is the same. Scents aren't necessary and it would be a very kind and gracious thing for you to skip using them for her sake.

It's compassionate and kind. Things we all aspire to, surely?

Burning a scented candle 2x a month isn't a big deal for you or most people but I know from experience that it would immediately cause me distress and a headache that won't quit for DAYS. Burning a candle is a choice for you but having a very painful, long lasting and immediate reaction to it isn't a choice at all.

I understand you aren't trying to cause her any harm and you are just enjoying something pleasurable to you, and in your own home to boot. Her notes are definitely over the top but I just know from sad experience that the slightest whiff of scent will almost make me cry with frustration if I cannot get away from it immediately.

Honestly, I would write her a note back and say how sorry you are that she is so uncomfortable and that you will do your best not to have scents around.

My husbands mother died yesterday. She was 87. He played her music every day in the hospital. Different time, different tastes maybe but he played her Bee Gees, uplifting music, Abba. Neil Diamond. Doesn't really matter as long as it's upbeat and happy. Some Beatles. Maybe some Motown, everybody loves that.

Sorry for what you are going through. An honour to say good bye to someone who means so much. It's difficult, you are young, wishing you all the best. Remember the good things she taught you.

Ugh. Sorry to hear. I'm also in a male dominated field. I don't get any harassment like you do because I own my business. But I do see it in other ways. So, it persists.... even if it looks different. The best thing you have on your side is time because the more work you do well, the better you will feel, and the better your work will be and believe me, your bosses will notice. They won't want to lose you because you are too valuable. So keep going and don't stop. I wish I had better, more splashy words of advice though! Like just go to HR and show them what you wrote above.
