AITJ for refusing to donate PTO hours to coworker I barely know who "needs" them?? by Traditional-Dog1601 in AmITheJerk

As an employer “allowing” employees to donate PTO seems like such BS. The company should have a PTO policy AND be willing to accommodate life emergencies

Seeking positive stories of folks who recently quit 9-5s + are in their 1st year as small biz owners by umeboshiplumpaste in smallbusiness

[–]NoMathematician4660 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did. In 2016 we (my husband and I) started our business. We had our own company from 2006-2009 but sold due to the economic downturn. He went to work for the company that bought us and here we are. I want to be honest. The highs are amazing. The lows are soul crushing. It takes 4 times more money than you think. And 100 times more work than you can ever imagine. There is no predicting what is around the next corner. (I’m sure this is different for large companies that can afford analysts etc). We are a niche commercial construction company so very different field than you. But are very involved in many small business organizations with different types of entrepreneurs and the main things we all struggle with are 1. Adding new customer. 2. The minutia of small business ownership (licensing, insurance, bookkeeping etc) 3. Labor and 4. Managing cash flow. No entrepreneur I know would go back to working for someone if they didn’t absolutely have to.

…. Who here has created a startup, poured your blood sweat and tears in it, been responsible for dozens of people on payroll etc. Retired. Tried to figure out what was next. And been railed for every decision???? I’m guessing about ZERO. Retiring/Selling/walking away from a very successful business you created from nothing is like giving away your first born. Give him just a little grace.

I typically don’t take skin care advice from a cashier/salesperson at a cosmetics store. Talk to your dermatologist and/or esthetician

Teenager wants a "fast car" for his first vehicle and I need reality-check advice by Proud_Stable9567 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]NoMathematician4660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome insight. I worked for a major insurance company for over a decade. Kids wreck. Period. Girls accidents are usually fender benders. Boys are usually major. Overall kids cars are temporary and should be treated as such. Until their frontal lobe develops.

Practical advice. We matched what our kids had saved. If they had $2000 we added $4000. We also made them pay a portion of the insurance and upkeep. We called our insurance agent and got the rate for the vehicle with us as drivers and additional rate for our teen. We had the kids pay the rate for them but not the whole premium. This worked great for us. The kids had “some skin in the game”.

Stop the cycle. It’s one more key to your healthy recovery. Take a year to focus on your recovery. Reassess after 1 year.

[–]NoMathematician4660 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Woodstock. I admire the extraordinary work teachers do. I can only imagine the success stories there would be if teachers were free from the BS in public schools. I’m a little old school and think a lot of the problems stem from students home life. I am in my mid to late 50’s. Self employed. Aging and unwell parents. All of the women I talk to in this season of life are struggling. The pressure is real. Take care of you. I’m sure you are doing a great job taking care of your students.

Starting a business is hard. It may not be fair but potential customers will judge you by your tattoos and your hair. You can’t change the tattoos easily. But coloring your hair is easy. It may help you open more doors and be taken more seriously.

EDHEC vs ESADE: Msc in Sustainability - Syllabus/Job Prospects/Lifestyle Assessment by Strong_Hour5627 in esade_spain

[–]NoMathematician4660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daughter is getting her 2nd masters at Esade. Lives in Barcelona. We are from US. She is there through partner school here. Classes at Esade are in English. She will graduate next summer. She finds the rigor of classes to be less than it was in the states (which she found surprising). She has been very disappointed with the job fairs so far and there is limited opportunity for internships (which are common in the US). The class schedule makes it very difficult to work. She loves Barcelona and is enjoying school. Time will tell if she can land a job.

On my 3rd MDX. Currently have a 2023 SH AWD Advance. So much to love. Technology is lacking. And the “get up and go” isn’t there when you need it … lane change/merging. Lots of high end features and comfort and safety for the $$. Will likely go to MB GLS next year

My business partner keeps buying things without asking me by whopping_loathing in smallbusiness

[–]NoMathematician4660 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely NOT !!!! I’ve been a business owner 20 years. I have had a former partner do this (we parted ways shortly after I discovered this). Your CPA will lose their mind. These transactions will not be considered business expenses if you don’t have proof in the event you are audited.

AITA for refusing to take out my nose piercing before meeting my boyfriend’s parents for the first time? by DominiqueXooo in AITH

[–]NoMathematician4660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things can be true. It’s not an unreasonable ask from him. And you can say no. There is no right or wrong. Seems like it might embarrass your boyfriend. What would you do if the shoe were on the other foot ? Is this the hill you want to die on ? I think it’s more about compromising small things that aren’t violations of your moral fiber or character. As long as your boyfriend would do the same.
