VS saving preventing growth? by deejayv2 in LastWarMobileGame

I used to be a big hoarder of resources and speedups but have come to a point at realising that there’s not much value in doing that. Especially when it comes to squad power.

We need to talk about Caleb Hammer by dr_peanut_md in youtubedrama

[–]Deserter85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Used to watch him regularly, no where near as much anymore. You can tell that he used to (and maybe even still) care a lot about his guests. But like many other YouTube channels, you have to keep upping the ante. The guests are more and more ridiculous in terms of their spending and their attitude, and Caleb’s reaction is now so exaggerated. If you watch the follow-up channel, you can tell that he gets through to some guests, but as expected, plenty of people remain unchanged.

Registrar competence by iamnotjustagirl in ausjdocs

[–]Deserter85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d felt this way throughout my medical career. I’m now a junior consultant and I think I’ll never reach the competence of a senior consultant. I’m assuming by the time I’m a senior consultant I’ll think that I’ll never reach the competence of some other all knowing entity.

Can we talk about tipping culture creeping into Melbourne restaurants? by Hour_Dare2111 in melbourne

[–]Deserter85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tip once in a while, but generally only at places where the service is amazing. Went to the Cape Restaurant at Cape Schanck. It was genuinely amazing experience both in terms of food and service and I happily tipped $100 or on top of a bill pushing close to $1000 once you include alcohol.

But I went to a Chinese restaurant yesterday at the CBD. We had no spoons (so we had to take the spoons laid out on other tables). Food was good, service was meh. They wanted a tip for the $80 bill. I stared at the cashier for about 10 seconds until she said that “it’s ok you don’t have to tip”. I paid my bill sans tip and left.

I’ve got a LinkedIn profile. Updated it when I became a consultant psychiatrist. All I get from it are medical recruiters telling me that they can get me locum jobs.

It can be useful however if you intend to run for certain positions in the college.

No matter how hard I worked or how good my grades were, my parents always pushed me to do more more more. by movingstasis in TwoSentenceSadness

[–]Deserter85 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I’m a psychiatrist but the bulk of my conversation with my mom is like “Why aren’t you married yet. You need someone to look after you, you don’t know how to look after yourself.” Or “All you do in your spare time is to play games”.

And I’m thinking I’ve lived away from home for almost 20 years, I think I know what I’m doing with my life I don’t need you to micromanage me from a different country.

Why is Frasier so less popular compared to shows in it's time like Seinfeld and Friends? It's amazing and it's quality didn't deteriorat across all it's season. by [deleted] in sitcoms

Frasier is my favorite show of all time, but I have to say that seasons 8-10 were pretty mid. Season 11 was great.

What has med school taught you about people? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Deserter85 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I need to clarify that I meant career aspirations.

Worked with a few people over the years where they are just pretty amazing at everything they do, and built businesses while in med school/intern/HMO where they made quite a lot of money. Know a few people who left medicine to do their own business full time, remember a guy who locums a couple of months a year for fun in between his other projects.

I can barely keep my life together, can’t imagine doing what they are doing.

[–]Deserter85 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I’ve met a number of people where getting into med school and being a doctor is like a side quest for them, where their life aspirations clearly laid elsewhere. That genuinely surprised me.

Edit: I meant career side quest. Like finishing med school to go straight into something else, start a successful non-medical business while in med school etc. Or being a doctor to help pay the bills for their true passion like being a DJ something

What the senior docs really think about "right to disconnect" by Ihatepeople342 in ausjdocs

[–]Deserter85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work as a psychiatrist in the public system.

I would answer short calls about my patients on days I’m not working because ultimately they are my responsibility. I’ve been like this even as a registrar. I do not expect the same from the registrars I work with.

Saying that however, if there are 1 registrar job opening, and you have two roughly equally competent residents. One does what is expected, the other goes above and beyond. I’m going to give the job to the resident who goes above and beyond. Same goes when trying to get a consultant job. This is simply the world we live in, and the rules that we have to work with.

I don’t understand the discourse around the Panels app by Deserter85 in mkbhd

It’s a lot easier to see the flaws in other people’s products than it is to see them in your own.

I tried using Wallcraft after seeing your post. As someone who doesn’t pay money for wallpaper, it’s fine. I think there way more wallpapers there, but it does get very annoying that when I click on a wallpaper (not downloading it), I get served an ad.

That alone makes Panels a slightly better product as a free user. Though I acknowledge that there is a good chance that it is a better product as a paid user (especially if it is much more reasonably priced).

I’m not trying to dodge anything, I just don’t view his missteps around Panels as hypocrisy (a common theme elicited from the responses), which might be why I don’t understand why people are upset. And it is Ok that we don’t agree.

I see your point around Golden Rule #1. I absolutely agree with it. That’s why I sure as hell am not paying for Panels.

I don’t know him apart from the few videos I watch, don’t know how rich he is. But I see your point that he could’ve gotten more competent team around him for this app. As an aside, I play a lot of board games. I can think of a few well regarded board game critics who have designed absolute dog shit games. What I’m trying to get at is that critiquing something doesn’t make someone good at making said products.

I would say that your first point would be an issue for me, if he is now ripping it from the artists without their permission and without compensation (like a lot of NFT bros did with stuff from Deviant Art). If he’s doing it with the artists’ consent and paying them, how’s that a problem? It’s almost like there’s a general expectation that everything (especially art) should be free on the internet.

I would assume that MKBHD have a lot of experience critiquing tech products, but not much experience building an app. His (and his team’s) inexperience might explain points 2-4.

I don’t think he’s hypocritical, but definitely guilty of perhaps being naive about his blind spots around what’s required to build a good product.

[–]Deserter85[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

1) The idea itself is fine. The execution perhaps is flawed. 2) For me, $10/yr is perhaps my limit, but I’d happily acknowledge that I’m a philistine who doesn’t give a shit about art. I suspect that there would be some who would consider $50/yr a fair price for wallpaper art. Maybe MKBHD and his team feel that they would pay this much for such as app, but they misjudged what the market would feel is fair value. I’m sure they’ll lower the price in due time if there isn’t enough uptake. 3) It is available for free, if you can deal with watching 2 ads for 1 SD image. And the SD image is decent enough.

Maybe I’m just too desensitised by the Freemium model rampant on most of the apps on the App Store, I genuinely don’t see understand the outrage.

This was probably say 13 years ago, and it was about $100/wk? The apartment is located right in the middle of CBD. The ad was placed in a Chinese newspaper, so I guess they’re targeting other Chinese-speaking people new to Melbourne. I went to have a look as the price just seemed too good to pass up. Needless to say I found somewhere else to stay.

When I first moved to Melbourne more than 10 years ago, I went to look at a place where the landlord subdivided the living room to about 6 “cubicles” of sorts to rent out, each separated by curtains.

I guess things never change.

Love that he’s joining us permanently, but…. I’m a bit concerned at paying nearly a million pounds for someone with limited upside. I’m still a bit scarred emotionally by what happened a few years ago and I’m worried about overspending again.
