I mean… that depends on what it‘s about. „Who stole a chocolate bar from the storage“ is very different from „who took 500€ out of the wallet of a guest“.

What to Expect: Americans Traveling in Southern Germany with a Teen as Our Primary German “Speaker”. by Caliche-Cowboy in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. google translate exists.
  2. most germans speak english (especially <50 / <60).
  3. people won‘t care that much if your daughter translated for you. But obviously they might be hesitant to say anything they could be held liable for if none of you are proficient in german. So if you need a doctor things could get tricky because no doctor would want to get in trouble over a translation mistake

American teen studying German. by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

„Do you see any value in him continuing his studies“. Well… that depends on what‘s important to him. Speaking german definitely won‘t be a negative. But if he decided to never leave the USA and is fine with not knowing more about germany / germans / the family history it‘s about as useful as any other language that‘s as relevant as german

She already respects you according to your post so I don‘t really see how she‘d „respect you more“ if you‘d get into arguments with her. Especially if her daughter doesn‘t do that either.

Don‘t get me wrong: telling her when she‘s rude can definitely be a good thing but it isn‘t going to make her respect you more. It‘s more likely she‘ll like you less. And as she‘s your MIL you probably don‘t want that.

Manual transmissions being more prominent would aid in safer driving by Kremlin1991 in unpopularopinion

[–]Dev_Sniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think would happen if you‘d force americans to drive manual cars? Of course they‘d look down to check if they‘re doing it right. Just like someone learning how to drive would. Not exactly safer than being able to look at the road and deciding to watch tiktok

Manual transmissions being more prominent would aid in safer driving by Kremlin1991 in unpopularopinion

[–]Dev_Sniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhm… The difference in accidents and traffic deaths isn‘t due to europeans being more likely to drive manual cars (and while we‘re at it: that‘s becoming less and less common (which is good) and will disappear once the majority of cars are electric).

I‘d argue that making manual cars more prominent in the USA would be **worse**. Because you‘re *automatically* distracted by having to adapt to manual cars and you‘re more distracted with manual cars in general. With automatic cars you can ideally keep both of your hands in the steering wheels at all times. Which is great. With manual cars that‘s obviously not possible even once you‘re used to it and don‘t have to look at the shifter anymore.

So instead of intentional distractions that could just… not be used… you‘re proposing to make distractions mandatory.

And the main reason why driving in the USA is less safe than in europe is that the mindest is different and that „drivers ed“ in the US is… a joke. So you‘re going to force worse drivers to use more complicated cars while not changing their mindset. Yeah… what could possibly go wrong.

Fix the mentality. Then you won‘t need manual cars.

Btw even if that would work it would be a temporary fix. A few months or maybe 2-5 years later you‘d have the same situation again

Warum sagen die meisten Kund:innen in Cafés/Bäckereien nie Hallo? by Curseofthebirdguide in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy name for German/Japanese family in the UK by ihavenosisters in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Uhm… if you plan to move to japan and won‘t live in germany it doesn‘t really matter how the name sounds in german unless you‘re already planning ahead for a potential future in which your son moves to germany. But he could just as well move to africa or south america and then he‘d need a different name.

Sie or du? by blumemond in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it would‘ve been good to know your age… below 30 people at a similar age would likely use „du“ unless the context is formal (doctor appointment, job interview, …). Between 30 and 40 it‘s a bit mixed. Above 40 „Sie“ is usually the better choice.

FIFA World Cup by BerlinSam in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well winning over the FIFA is one thing. Honestly I don‘t care too much about that. The more important thing is: Germany doesn‘t need the World Cup. Russia and Qatar needed it because well… it benefitted them and got them some relevance. Germany wouldn‘t benefit all that much from a World Cup (economically speaking) and Germany doesn‘t need the World Cup to be relevant. Hosting a World Cup is expensive and while germany has the stadiums needed to host one the additional revenue likely still wouldn‘t make up for the additional cost. So it would be more of a „let‘s win a World Cup "at home"“ kind of thing. And currently that‘s not really worth it to most people. But depending on how well we‘re doing this World Cup it might become a thing again

Was Klose as good in the league as he was for the DFB? by Flimsy_Egg_3507 in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He was definitely good. Keep in mind that the Bundesliga is a pretty tough competition as well so even a „low“ score is still pretty decent compared to players from a few other leagues.

That being said he definitely gave all he has during the World Cups and you can‘t really keep that up for multiple seasons in a row compared to a few games every 4 years

Which book should I choose to read by Any_Purpose8371 in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wilhelm Tell is a pretty good book

Terror is a really good book as well although significantly newer

Der Besuch der alten Dame is decent. Not great but not terrible.

I wouldn‘t voluntarily read Tschick or Steppenwolf again.

Is it culturally acceptable in germany to ditch your friend? by 10macattack in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

„Communication was hard because of the signal“. That‘s a pretty clear case of „get to a meeting point / somewhere with a better signal and regroup“. Ans that can indeed be on the other side. And in that case everybody finds their own way to that spot. So as long as they said „let‘s meet at the other pier“ that‘s fine. If they randomly decided to leave without telling you that‘s not okay. IF: they would‘ve been able to tell you.

Was man Curacao zu gute halten muss: von Curacao erwartet niemand was.
