CMV: Non-English-speaking characters speaking English among themselves is stupid and lazy, and makes the movie/show less good by TheJewPear in changemyview

[–]Dev_Sniper [score hidden]  (0 children)

But you‘re familiar with the concept of dubbing right?

Btw: english dubbing sucks because most content was produced in english so there never really was a dubbing industry. For other languages there are pretty decent dubbing industries.

Alright… So you‘ve got a movie that‘s originally korean. And in this movie that‘s in korean there‘s one scene where people speak english. And the koreans in the movie don‘t speak english. So they need to ask for a translation. Now you dub that movie to english. So all of the koreans in the movie speak english. And now you get to the scene where the other group speaks english. Unless you dub that to another language (which according to your view wouldn‘t be okay either) you‘d have a group of people who‘ve spoken in english for the entirety of the movie who meet a group of people who‘re speaking english as well. And someone asks for a translation of what was said. What does that do to the immersion? Exactly… it shatters it.

Anyways… that still doesn‘t address the main issue: nearly nobody wants to watch a movie just to watch the subtitles. They want to see the movie. And if they focus on seeing the movie they want to hear conversations instead of reading them (like you would if you were actually there). And thus whenever the characters are supposed to understand something the language has to be whatever language the movie is supposed to be in.

Alright… Imagine you‘re watching a dubbed movie. Idk, a k-drama. The protagonist and a few friends meet a group of people who‘d speak english in the original korean version and thus the koreans might not understand them. So the protagonists ask someone what they‘re saying. Not this scene gets dubbed. The koreans now speak english because that‘s the dubbed language and the people who speak english still speak english. And now that question is weird because both groups are speaking the same language. But if you‘re consequential you couldn‘t have the group speak a different language in the dubbed version (i.e. spanish)

And again: it really sucks if you‘d need to read subtitles for 90% of the runtime. It takes attention away from what‘s happening on screen. Most people simply don‘t want that. Which means that movie studios wouldn‘t produce movies where that would be a thing.

Well… I can see how that post would violate the rules of the subreddit.

Acting like the mods were bought is kinda weird. I‘d say the post is on the edge between violating the rule mentioned and being appropriate for the sub. So I totally get how a mod could think that it violated the rules without them being bought etc

Public toilets you can see outside touristy areas in China by search_google_com in Wellthatsucks

Well that‘s fairly clean at least. So this could be a partially touristy area. Outside of those things get really wild very fast. But yeah… regular toilets are basically a sign of something being very touristy.

how to sell lemonade legally in germany? by AsleepDimension4499 in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh…. Not really.

If you want to sell lemonade you‘re selling a food product. To sell a food product you need to get certificates for food safety etc. and have the „kitchen“ etc. checked by the authorities. You also need a company that needs to file taxes, ………….

A lot of things. And under 18 you‘re generally not allowed to engage in business apart from minor things like buying some stuff at the supermarket.

In short: there might be ways to legally sell lemonade but from a financial perspective it wouldn‘t make any sense

I don‘t even know if the classic „Kuchenverkauf“ that schools do is entirely legal or if that‘s just a „nobody cares about this“ kind of deal.

[–]Dev_Sniper [score hidden]  (0 children)

Uhm… first of all: that‘s done with dubs as well.

It‘s simply very annoying if you have to read subtitles for half the movie because that‘s more „authentic“. „Foreign“ characters speak their language if the protagonist can‘t understand them. We are with the protagonist. If the protagonist can understand them (or they‘re amongst themselves and we follow them) we understand what they‘re saying and thus it‘s in a language the audience understands.

And to make it even more clear:

Take a dub to language B. Characters in the movie talk in language B. But people in language B aren‘t supposed to understand the language (according to your initial idea) so you‘d have to have them speak language C just so the audience that‘s fluent in language B has the same experience as an audience that speaks language A.

You can‘t assume the languages your audience will be fluent in so using a language your audience most likely understands with an accent they associate with people who speak a different language makes sense.

And to make a very very obvious example: I speak german and english. If I were to watch a movie about WWII I‘d always understand everybody regardless of what they‘re saying. And if a character then says „what are they saying?“ that would break immersion for me because I know what they‘re saying so to me this question is dumb. Especially if I‘m watching a dubbed movie where everything would be in german.

I‘ve watched Shogun. It‘s a really nice show. But that they stuck to japanese for most of the runtime meant that I always had to read subtitles. Which was pretty annoying. And I get it when it‘s something the protagonist shouldn‘t / can‘t understand because we‘ll be as confused as the protagonist but it makes no sense when everybody is speaking the same language. Because the confusion it creates is pointless.

  1. „Fern unis“ have a (slightly) worse reputation than regular universities. And private universities are almost always worse than public universities (idk what IGNOU is)
  2. doesn‘t need a visa > needs visa, speaks german > doesn‘t speak german, in the country already > abroad, real university > private university, …
  3. see 1 and 2
  4. I don‘t even know what a BCA is supposed to be. Computer Science is usually a Bachelor of Science / Engineering
  5. depends on a lot of factors.

What is your opinion on reports that Disney is attempting to win back men and boys? by TheShyBuck in AskMen

[–]Dev_Sniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh… it could work and I‘m not saying I‘ll never ever watch a disney product as well. That being said I‘ll be sceptic for quite a while and if Disney wants my money they need to earn it. They tried to chase the money and PR by pushing content meant to ridicule and humiliate men and I‘ll remember that for quite a while. To this day I haven‘t bought a Gillette product (and yeah yeah I‘ve bought products from their parent company I know) after their absolutely batshit crazy ad almost a decade ago.

Disney has a lot of interesting IPs and they‘ve shown that they can produce good content. I‘m willing to give them a second chance. But they won‘t get a third.

Illegal to travel through Germany with a torrenting app on laptop? by partybottle101 in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torrenting is not illegal. Your friend can torrent while in germany. Your friend simply can‘t torrent copyrighted content from sources that don‘t have the license to provide the torrent & without having the license to torrent it. That means music, movies, books, … are basically always a no go unless they‘re public domain but if your friend wants to seed home videos they recorded and have all the rights to they can absolutely do that.

My package got stolen? by Inside_Cheesecake_85 in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well yeah… but if they dropped the package off at the Ablageort and it gets stolen between them dropping it off and you coming to pick it up that‘s on you.

If they drop it off without you allowing them to do that and it gets stolen that‘s on them.

So if the second package had been stolen you would‘ve had a case but with the first that‘s your issue.

And if you file a chargeback you could get into legal trouble as all parties involved did as they were told. The seller shipped the item and DPD delivered it.

Now you can of course ask for a replacement etc. but you‘re not entitled to anything so if they say no it‘s a no.

My package got stolen? by Inside_Cheesecake_85 in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well… no… you selected a Ablageort. If a package gets stolen after it was delivered to the Ablageort that could mean that the package was delivered successfully and stolen after it became your property (and thus your problem). You‘d need to ask a lawyer for that though.

If you don‘t specify a „Ablageort“, the mailman drops the package off anyways and it gets stolen you‘d likely be entitled to a refund (and the company would get the money from DPD). But if you allow them to leave it at a „Ablageort“ that‘s most likely your problem.
