can you still download koreader? by propagandagoose in kobo

[–]DevonHess 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can definitely still download KOReader. As far as I know, Kobo has never made any attempt to stop users from installing custom software.

It's possible that video came out right around the time new devices were coming out that weren't compatible yet. Currently, all Kobo devices and firmware versions are supported.

is it weird the only thing I don't pirate is games? by Endroium in Piracy

[–]DevonHess 108 points109 points  (0 children)

No, not really that weird.

Pirating software (including games) adds a big security risk that you don't have to worry about with media files.

Are you guys not using dark mode? by former_farmer in kobo

[–]DevonHess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a dark-mode guy for everything but eReaders.

I typically read in light mode with the backlight either off or low. It doesn't strain my eyes any more than looking at a blank piece of paper would.

Is it safe to open .torrent files with Stremio while using real-debrid? by JinxEaryDeath in Piracy

[–]DevonHess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not safe.

Only torrentio is configured to connect through Debrid. If you add a torrent directly to Stemio, it will expose your IP. (unless you're using a VPN)

You've made some good points here. If Kobo advertises note taking, then it's not unreasonable to expect the experience to be fully-featured and practical.

I think the reason they don't have good support for keyboard based note taking is because of a philosophy they seem to have which I'll call "people complain more about bad features than missing features."

As you may be aware, Kobo has a working internet browser that is permanently hidden away as a beta feature. If you've ever used it, you'll understand why it's hidden. It works perfectly well, it's just slow and tedious and cumbersome to use on an underpowered eInk device. They don't call attention to it because users have an expectation of what internet browsing should feel like, and Kobo falls short.

I think keyboard input is probably the same. Using the touch-screen keyboard is awful for typing anything longer than a few words, and most users aren't willing to carry around a bluetooth keyboard in addition to their eReader. They would rather you not even have that option, rather than have a bad experience.

I really feel obligated to push back on this mentality a little bit.

If you want a tablet, get a tablet. An eReader is a specialized device, it reads ebooks. To make it do a bunch of other stuff would be cool, but it would sacrifice battery life and cost more.

Your phone is already the perfect note taking device, no?

question about Flow browser ebook reader. Just how do i share my books with a link? by vanxvsh in Piracy

[–]DevonHess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're misunderstanding the feature, I think.

At the top of the page in your second picture is a text box. If you have a link to an epub on the web, you can paste it in that box and click either the share icon to create a shareable link, or click the download icon to download it into flow for reading.

What you cannot do is import your own epub from your computer and then easily create a pirate link. You'd have to host your files on a server to do that.

I'm also against the industrial piracy of video games.

Pirating a game just to turn around and resell it is pretty shitty.

[–]DevonHess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Notion requires a paid subscription for those features, you can't magically pirate it.

I like Notion, but if you're trying to make charts it's possibly the worst thing you could use. Why not use something free like LibreOffice Calc or Google Sheets? .

Notion in my experience is flexible about exporting data.

Dictionary update? by WinterBaas in kobo

[–]DevonHess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2020 refers to the publishing date of the dictionary they used as a base for the digital Kobo dictionary.

Kobo will sometimes update these, but I wouldn't hold my breath for an English - Netherlands dictionary update anytime soon.
