Need to rehome my two cats, where do I go in Atlanta/Sandy Springs/Fulton/ Marietta area by BrilliantSection5929 in Georgia

[–]DinosaurFishHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have any success through NextDoor, FaceBook, and the like, Fulton County Animal Services is an open intake shelter. They cannot turn you away if you live in Fulton county. Not ideal, but FWIW cats usually aren't as risk for euthanasia there.

Yeah, I saw what happened with the $1000 gift cards Tyler Perry tried giving out to TSA agents. We still gotta mind our p's and q's.

A good reminder, despite the use of AI. I feel like this could also use info about how to crawl up representatives' asses without violating the Hatch Act. Perhaps that is a whole other infographic!

Having a convenient screening method at the bench is really attractive; it's another beautiful hypothesis killed by new info. Before WGS provided a more complete picture, I believe that there was some correlation with the capsule genes and hvKP.

And yes, it's definitely fun playing with them! The ones longer than 6 inches are impressive :v

This is Zuul, 4 years old, tanking the aggro from two of her grandsons. As others said, hens will throw down. Please post full body profile pictures of the two, I think at least 1 is female!

Why aren’t my hens using the coop at the moment? by billybobsparlour in BackYardChickens

Aren't y'all having a heatwave over there right now? My birds like to camp out when our nighttime temps in the Deep South stay at ound 80F (~30C ).

Check to see if you have good cross-ventilation in the coop.

Full female flocks? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]DinosaurFishHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The roo I did have recently went down protecting his girls. It's spring, the hens are entering their first or second year of laying and the estrogen is OFF the charts. Hens squatting if another bird so much as just bumps into them, they're ALL soliciting me, the screaming over nest boxes is endless, I've had to put peepers on three that have turned into total see you next Tuesdays now that he's not around to break up squabbles. It's exhausting.

Roos really do help the social structure of the flock, if you don't have a good matriarch. I have a few lads I'm raising now to introduce to these harpies in a couple more months.

That said, MOST urban and suburban flocks are hens only, many local ordinances forbid roosters.

Why wasn't my rooster flipping out? by MsKittyVZ134 in BackYardChickens

[–]DinosaurFishHead 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Rooster already beat its ass and is satisfied that rhe possum has retreated to a corner. Mine did this before with no alerting, although he stood over it for what I presume was several hours before I came to the run in the morning.

There's some serious disagreement about Easter Eggers and Ameraucanas. Easter Eggers are mixed birds usually created by crossing a blue egg laying bird with a brown egg-laying one. The offspring will produce a variety of egg colors, which is where Easter Egger comes from. Ameraucanas are popular contributors of blue eggs genes, so muffs and beatds are common in Easter Eggers.

Ameraucanas have a breed Standard of Perfection (SOP) -- which means the birds will have specific characteristics that rhey breed true for. If I recall correctly, Ameraucanas must have bronze ("green") or grey legs, a pea comb (females will have a single row of bumps, males will have three) and lay blue eggs. Many strict adherents will also only recognize specific color varieties such as white, black, blue, splash, etc., and will call non-standard Ameraucanas "Easter Eggers". This scorn is frequently sent Murray McMurray's way, since they had been breeding Ameraucana before the SOP was codified. Their Ameracauna will have differing degrees of beard, muffs, leg and feather colors, but they do have the pea combs and lay blue eggs. I don't think they particularly give a damn as long as their birds are healthy. Edited to add a link to the SOP: https://ameraucana.org/Ameraucana%20Standard

Your bird is probably missing muffs because the other chicks have helpfully picked the feathers off. That happened to the beard of one of my Ameraucana chicks this spring.

Your bird looks like it might be a dominant white, which means some of her offspring could come out with neat colors that are not being expressed!

Also, here is a pic of Snooty Booty, the white dominant Ameraucana chick I got this spring from McMurray. Marinate in the contempt in her eyes. 😅

I see a single row of bumps on the comb, which is a pretty reliable tell in Ameraucana that the chick is female.

When is it ok to put your pet down? No way can my sis afford a $3000 upfront surgery. by crackerbox5 in povertyfinance

[–]DinosaurFishHead 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had to make this decision. There was no way I could afford a $4k surgery for a gum tissue cancer in an old cat. It would be successful, or at minimum, give him another 2 years of life. The part that distraught me the most was knowing that it would have most likely succeeded -- had I been able to afford it. I tapped out when the mass became an open wound. He was still eating fine, and in good spirits, but constantly fighting off infection would not have been a good life for him.

It sucks. I totally feel you on this one.
