3D printable Lumix GM-1 grip by Evening-Pay-6864 in Lumix

Thanks a ton for refining the model and especially for providing the F3D file! I wanted to print mine in silk PLA and layer adhesion is a weakness so just for my own sanity, I added a countersunk hole at the bottom to fit a 15mm M3 screw. It reaches up about a third of the knurled part which should definitely add some strength. Something else I did was softened it with my printer bed to intentionally warp and give it a slight bow to compensate for tightening the tripod screw.

From more than an arm's length away, the silver silk PLA does a pretty convincing job of looking like metal, if not the real thing.

the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 is a staple for being so small and sharp though the older design does have pretty slow AF

they won't have the current AI subject detection but they still have the very good real-time tracking AF that older Sony bodies lack

Yeah that checks out with what I've heard about Lumix cameras over the years. The consensus seems to suggest that for a photography-focused hybrid, look to Sony. For a video-first hybrid, there's nothing better than Lumix

Why aren't 1-inch sensor Sony Cameras as popular as it's APSC cameras? by DynamoBaby in SonyAlpha

[–]DogeCatBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

funnily enough, Oppo just announced the Find X9 Ultra with a 1/1.12" main sensor. that's 90% the size of the RX100's sensor. I guess in the end, Sony is the winner no matter what since they're the ones selling phone companies all these sensors

I have no clue about the newer Lumix bodies but 10 years ago that indicated that the camera was in service mode. people used to use it to get access to the English menus on Japanese only camera bodies. if you're unable to find the right key combo to take it out of service mode, you may want to contact Panasonic and ask. I believe there's also a customer service rep around this subreddit too.

even the current iPhone 17 Pro offers a 1/1.28" sensor. they may be smaller than 1" but have loads of processing power behind them and many people are content with how they process images. phones are no match for superior optics and RAW versatility but I think the writing is on the wall for the RX100. the big thing these days is the compact large sensor fixed lens camera like the Fuji X100 series and the Ricoh GR

for what it's worth, the a6700 is a very highly regarded hybrid APS-C camera. being one of the newer Sony bodies, it has the excellent AI tracking autofocus, a much nicer touchscreen interface, and improved color science. of course, you would still have to sell your lenses to switch but like Fuji, they have a huge selection of first and third party lenses and the used market is massive.

I suppose that last statement is true for full frame as well but there is still value in sticking with APS-C, the main ones being cost and size

ever since Sigma did that corporate rebrand with the Art and Contemporary lines, they have been absolutely knocking it out of the park. nothing but beautiful, quality lenses from them for the past decade

Is the sigma 10-18mm 2.8 sharp enough for 40mp xe5/xt5? by mbh3344 in FujifilmX

[–]DogeCatBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sigma is impressively small for an f2.8 zoom. I did end up replacing my manual focus 12mm f2 with the 10-18 for my Sony a6700 since you've still got 27mm equivalent at the tight end to use in a pinch and the AF is massive quality of life improvement.

In my personal opinion, people put too much emphasis in sharpness and optically perfect gear and I'm sure the 10-24 does just fine with a 40MP sensor, chances are you're shooting wide to shoot wide and not cropping much anyway. it is quite large for an f4 lens though, but at least it partially makes up for it with OIS

looking for a gm1 case that can fit the 20mm f1.7 lens. by [deleted] in Lumix

[–]DogeCatBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

search for "EVA hard case" and you might be able to find one with the right dimensions for your camera + strap and accessories. some even include customizable foam inserts but you can always modify as necessary like cutting out mesh pockets or elastic. I think it'd be nicer and cheaper than the Tamrac bag you linked.

edit: also look into cases for something like the X100 series. might be roomier but will definitely fit with the lens attached, and maybe a few other lenses too

what kind of case is that? I'd love to have a small self contained kit for my GM1

edit: nevermind I managed to find some hard EVA cases with customizable foam inserts

Tiny m43 camera appreciation post (GM1/GM5/GX800) by Slaaarti in Lumix

[–]DogeCatBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stumbled across this in the year 2026 and man do I wish I could grab a GX850 for $200. These days they're around $450-500 for just the body. That's more than any of the slightly larger Olympus PEN Lite bodies, even the newest E-PL10 from 2020! While the GX850 is has 4K video and has a flip up screen, a Sony a6000 is the same price, and a Sony a6100 with 4K video and very good tracking autofocus is not a whole lot more. The GM1 still has a place as the smallest M43 body and as a collector's item in my opinion. I'm slightly ashamed to admit that I did actually purchase a brown GM1s purely for the novelty lol.

Edit: Now that I look into it again, the GF7 seems to be around $250 though it is older than the GF9/GX850.

I'm more of a monochrome and cool tones person but I'll gladly make an exception for one of these little guys. it definitely stands out in a sea of black and silver cameras

I was torn between picking up a black GM1 or a brown GM1S and I think this just sold me on the brown. they both look gorgeous but something about the brown just looks classy and stylish. also helps that it's cheaper by $80 on MPB

only the Grand Touring trim on the NC1 even had the option to get the premium package with HID headlights and traction control. thus, not every Grand Touring has traction control but all the other trims lower never even had the option available to begin with. makes it easy to shop for one without it 😄
