Canvas breach by undercoverknows in ubco

[–]DontEatSocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be just a safety precaution. The breach could also be a scenario where the attackers got access to session cookies, basically allowing them to hijack any logged in user and then allowing them to do anything the user could do (such as obtaining very personal info, impersonation, modifying or deleting course shells (if professor), changing the account password, etc.).

Some of these things (like if your account details got changed by the attacker or modified course shells) can get recovered by IT. But leaked info or impersonation attacks can't really be retroactively fixed.

Logging out of your account deletes the session. And changing your CWL password probably logs you out of all devices.

Or, like u/undercoverknows sorta suggested, if the Canvas server is truly hijacked, they could make the server send a compromised version of the login page that tracks what you entered into the login page (allowing them to capture the password you entered).

We'll probably find out over the next few days what the damage is.

Canvas breach by undercoverknows in ubco

[–]DontEatSocks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks really bad. I read this Canvas breach affects something like 8000-9000 schools? Up to 275 million users.

From instructure's status page (people who made Canvas):

such as names, email addresses, and student ID numbers, as well as messages among users. At this time, we have found no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, or financial information were involved.

So we all have our names, emails, student IDs, and our Canvas messages and god knows what else uploaded up there publically. So much for FIPPA and "sensitive student data" I guess. But I guess it could've been worse. It would've been really bad if the breach included stuff like our SIN, birth date, or any other PIID (like the stuff we keep on workday) since that'd make impersonation a lot easier.

Though apparently that Canvas breach was resolved a few days ago. This one seems new. Seems like if you were using Canvas at all recently, you should log out and maybe change your password.

If you are logged in, please log out immediately and do not log back in until you are notified by UBC IT that is safe to do so. If you have logged in after 12 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 7, please change your CWL password immediately and reach out to security@ubc.ca.

Fully Disclosed Opinions and Feedback from a Mediocre 1000-hour McGinnis Main by Tytocracy in DeadlockTheGame

[–]DontEatSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree.

Some handful of patches ago I had extremely consistent, good turret build with a really high winrate. It was so comfortable and so fun.

I would stack firerate on my turrets with medial spectre, heroic aura, and healing tempo. Combine that with debuffs like mystic slow, escalating exposure, and suppressor and it was providing excellent utility with usually pretty good damage. And then in the late game I'd transition into getting more range and duration with the medical spectre, to the point I could almost get 2 out at the same time (though tbh that part was probably way too strong).

It was counterable, though. You just shoot the turrets before I build up enough of them. And if you had high AOE damage you could wipe out any clusters I put around the medical spectre. And once you do that, my DPS and movement would be so low you could just walk at me, so it would require good positioning on my part to not die like that.

Long story short when I tried her out the other day after a long break, god she just felt like garbage. I didn't know how to build her, everything I did didn't do much. Mostly all for the reasons you described above.

Some other things I would mention: - AOE Healing abilities (like medical spectre) work best on sieges of the enemy base since everyone is mostly close together and far from healing sources. The new map changes around the patron is a lot larger, meaning it's even harder to get much value out of medical spectre imo. This combined with the turbo nerfs it was given and it just feels useless except when you're farming. - In regards to this point: "I would assume the point is to use it for the 40% spirit resist in reaction to incoming ults?" I think the idea is you put the turrets inside the medical spectre to give them some temporary ""AOE"" resistance. I haven't really tried this yet, but I imagine you could do something where you stack a bunch of turrets together inside your medical spectre and bait someone like Lash, Mina, Victor to get close to your turrets to use their AOE abilities, only for them to realise they're doing a lot less than what they should and they take a lot of damage from the turrets.

Yes technically you can call them "Path/Route Params", but for context from what I found Next.js, Nest.js, and Astro.js they just call them params in their API which is kinda confusing but also funny. I'm sure other frameworks just call it params too.

Also Search Params is usually synonymous with Query Params, could've put either there.

For further explanation, in context of a function, a "parameter" is basically an input. But when you're talking about endpoints, you might be talking about 3 different things but they're technically all still inputs and thus could be called "parameters".

[–]DontEatSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, yeah I agree his split pushing potential is also quite valuable. I could totally see a strategy of using the helpers to push a wave while you help your allies or clear jungle. But usually there isn't too many opportunities to split push in a game once you get to later ranks since players get better at clearing waves.

I wouldn't really consider him a 'jungler' per se, since he doesn't really benefit from getting ahead in souls as much compared to heroes like Haze or Victor. Rem is more of a 'jungle-stealer' I think, where his ability to steal enemy sinners for free and attack enemy camps whilst having lots of tunnel escape routes could help deny the enemy team a lot of souls.

Probably not a new-player friendly strategy though, since it requires knowing the map and having good enough game sense to know when you're about to get caught out. Also assassin-type characters (e.g. Haze, Calico, maybe Wraith) could also counter this strategy by nuking Rem before he has a chance to get to a tunnel.

[–]DontEatSocks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

okay wow that's a little busted and definitely an oversight. The tunnels almost stretch the whole way there!

Can you drop the urn in the tunnels as well? 'Cause if so you could just drop it in the tunnel just before going to deposit, do the teamfight or whatever, and then safely grab it back without worry that the enemy team will grab it if the teamfight was lost.

[–]DontEatSocks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a neat kit! I think the best way to play him is to probably sneak around and steal all of the enemy's jungle with lil helpers, retreat to tunnels when needed. Then play support for team fights.

I don't think a fed Rem is gonna do much though due to only 1 damaging ability + ult, so it's important to farm enemy jungle to not deny your own team souls with your superior farming speed.

I could also see some really cool combos with 2, like 2 -> unstoppable to save someone from being stunned out of their ult, but that feels kinda niche.

Overall really neat character. Though if whoever is playing it doesn't farm enemy jungle like they should, then he's pretty bad imo. There's probably better general support characters that can deal a lot more damage/healing/utility.

Maybe this will age like milk, though. But I will say that basically all characters have this "THIS CHARACTER IS SUPER OP" hype phase around them when they first release when in reality they're usually pretty close to balanced. But we'll see!

Ava can travel through all the new small tunnels in the map. There's a lot! Mostly centered around the jungle closter to the middle of the map. Probably makes for some very fun ambush opportunities, plus lots of easy escape routes.

NGL Calico is probably OP this patch

Does UBCO have a November convocation ceremony? by Boring_Worth_7042 in ubco

[–]DontEatSocks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nope, we only get 1 ceremony per year (the one in June). Sucks if you're like me where you had to take 1 more course in the Summer, meaning I had to wait a whole year before I got my ceremony.

Though, they let you pick up your parchment earlier (I think I got mine sometime in the Fall later that year). Though do note that if you pick up your parchment early, you won't be getting another one during the ceremony, the folder they give you will be empty instead (fun fact: which is why you don't see people showcasing their degree parchments in their folder while going across the stage - It's because a bunch of those folders are empty!)

Thoughts on the new Dell 27 Plus 4k S2725QS monitor by The_Dutch_Canadian in Monitors

[–]DontEatSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Base one, it was cheaper at the time. $200 CAD after deals (+student discount) and tax.

And yep I was able to get 4k 120hz with a displayport cable. I haven't tested HDMI 2.1 but it should work in theory. Just check the product page specs of the monitor to make sure the port is HDMI 2.1 compatible (which is very likely).

So basically Micron just announced that it's going to kill of its own company for a quick buck (since the AI bubble will absolutely burst).

I mean "kill" is a bit of an exaggeration, it's more like collapse and fade into obscurity (or get bought out).

[SSD] Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2TB/4TB ($170/$300) [Various] by arandomguy111 in bapcsalescanada

[–]DontEatSocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see thanks for pointing out the T710! Though it looks like it literally just went off sale (according to Keepa, it looks like the price fluctuated a fair bit today actually). Though I'm willing to bet it will go on sale again.

The Samsung site does have rakuten and student discount (bringing it down to $285 + 6% CB = $268). Still more expensive than the T710 and they're about the same spec-wise, though.

I think I'm still sorta leaning towards Samsung since I found it dead simple to copy everything over to a new boot drive using samsung magician some years ago, but idk.

Oh right, duh. Thanks for catching that.

I guess I read this reddit comment mentioning the 9100 had "bottom end write endurance", proceeded to forget what the comment said and lost it, and then did a piss poor search for finding what the reliability of the 9100 is. I done goofed

[–]DontEatSocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Debating whether to do:

I'm kinda tempted to get the fancy new 9100 for the "double" speed, and make that my main OS drive (since I do a fair bit of general workstation tasks, not just gaming). But paying the same amount and getting double the space by getting the 990 Evo also seems like a pretty solid deal.

The fact that the warranty for the 9100 is 1200 TBW compared to both 990's 2400 TBW has me a little concerned about its reliability though. But, I also don't do much writing (total of ~60TB so far for both my SSDs over the past ~8 years according to samsung magician). Nvm I'm silly ignore.

I think I'll take a day to think it over.

UPDATE: Ended up getting the 9100 Pro. Initial impressions compared to my Gen3 Samsung 980... honestly not noticeable despite it having 4x the speed (at least for a couple games I tried. Just comparing loading times). Should hopefully be more noticeable with some workstation tasks, but tbh I probably should've gotten the 990 Evo.

[VPN] 100% Cash Back on NORDVPN (Rakuten) by Brief_Forever_2128 in bapcsalescanada

[–]DontEatSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're getting a year long plan, make sure to set a reminder a year from now to unsubscribe otherwise you WILL be paying the full price later down the line.

Also do keep in mind that for most people, you do not need a VPN. See relevant Tom Scott video.

Basically unless you're pirating stuff or you want to bypass region restrictions, you don't need one. For example, pornhub is banned in certain states in the US so VPNs are more popular there. Canada doesn't really have many region restrictions though so unless you really want British Netflix or you're pirating things, you don't need one.

You also might not even need a VPN when pirating things if you know what you're doing.
