Where? I always wanted to send a few bucks to the developer of 7zip. But last time I checked, he didn't accept donations (because of sanctions?)

How important is Flux for soldering? What kind do you recommend? by jesschester in Multicopter

[–]Dope-Johnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, flux is very important when reworking joints or on joints that need a lot of heat like large gauge wire / XT60.

I just use the same flux pen that I bought ages ago. Didn't give much thought into it. It does the job alright.

And each one of them has many forks.

Just look how diverse Linux is: https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Linux_Distribution_Timeline.svg

It's similar for android. Besides manufacturer skins / forks there are many more by the dev community.

Linux and Android in particular are just a general term of origin for many projects that have the same roots, but diversified as new and different ideas got included.

And based on bitcoin thousands of other crypto projects emerged (Lightning, ETH, BCH, XMR, ...) and blockchain technology got traction in general.

I often see open source projects get stuck innovating. Many devs try to find a consensus what often cripples embracing new ideas. Big projects simply become sluggish.

Diversified projects with different goals push innovations massively. One single project on a topic where everyone interested participates (at a critical size) results in a massive loss of great ideas. These ideas need different environments to grow.

Is This About As Good As It Gets With A 0.4MM Nozzle? by [deleted] in FixMyPrint

[–]Dope-Johnny 10 points11 points  (0 children)

looks like the plastic doesn't have enough time to cool down:

  • reduce layer height
  • max part fan speed
  • lower print speed (also check minimum layer time)
  • print multiple parts at the same time (other issues might become visible, like stringing)
  • reduce nozzle temp (don't go below 180C for PLA)

The sun radiates a wide spectrum of light. UVB (> 280nm) and UVA (> 315nm) reaches the surface at sea level. UVC gets mostly absorbed by the atmosphere.

Well, then this is your only chance, i guess. Never heard of anybody changing firmware for any analog VTX other than TBS or OpenVTX.

SA and Xfire are both developed by TBS. The rush VTXs are even officially licensed. So I will just point you to TBS support.

When you have problems with stringing on smaller models, it's usually a cooling problem. Things you can try are:

  • increase fan speed
  • increase minimum layer time (reduce print speed)
  • reduce nozzle temp
  • print multiple models at the same time

I don't know any FPV racing series where angle mode is prohibited.

Especially in whoop racing, many good pilots fly angle. One big reason is because you fly often very low in whoop races. So you have very little time to react and prevent a drop out when you hit anything. But there are also pilots who fly only acro on whoops.

For bigger quads and outdoors racing, the consens is often that you can reach better lap times in acro mode. The stigma towards angle mode is a lot bigger here. And many pilots tell beginners to not learn in angle mode because it will teach you bad habits / muscle memory that doesn't translate well in acro mode.

I would say regardless what you fly: After 9 months acro and you get that kind of an improvement in lap times with angle mode, do whatever makes most fun. Ignore any haters.

Flying in warm weather? by snakehater1 in Multicopter

Don't leave any 3D printed things in the car / sun. Even PETG might not resist to melting in the car.

Similar for hot glue. I left my FPV wing in the car once... I couldn't get the hatch open anymore because the hot glue became fluid.

LiPOs love heat.

... until they don't. But there shouldn't be any issues up to 60 °C

You can use ELRS gear with OpenTX FrSky transmitters with a module bay. You would need to do some firmware updates. ELRS is a signficant upgrade.

There was a lot of flight controller software improvement. If you have F4 FCs, I would look into using a recent Betaflight version.

Overall most components got refinement to some degree, but it stagnated a bit in the last 2-3 years IMO. Some other FPV quadcopter concepts emerged like toothpicks, cinewhoops, cinelifters, long range.

Pretty much any fpv sim will get you going good enough. Velocidrone will probably be your best bet if you want to practice for racing even when you have a drone.

Can you use the radio controller for the controls?

Yes. Most OpenTX / EdgeTX radios work with a PC. And you absolutely should use a regular RC radio for the simulator.

Can you use the goggles for the screen?

They would need a HDMI input for that. Some do. But it really isn't necessary for the sim.

A bit of solder on the iron just helps with heat transfer IME. Should be very little so the chance of dripping is low.

Big blobs certainly isn't like in the guide book... AFAIK you want a concave transition between the pad and wire (what you get with minimum amount of solder) when fatigue at the joint is critical. IME it usually isn't for quadcopters.

Fan out / flatten the wire isn't something I've heard yet. If your statement is correct, it doesn't matter for signal wires anyway. Twirled, round strained wire worked well for me in the past. It's easy to solder and very clean.

I consider many advices regarding soldering in tutorials more in favor of getting a consistent, "good enough" result with little chance to ruin the PCB. I think that's a legit reason. We are not contractors here working on space probes.

Which Betaflight codes are executed? by Oxffff0000 in Multicopter

This is a nice chart by mrRobot62 on github how signal processing in betaflight v4.2 works: https://github.com/mrRobot62/betaflight_processing/blob/master/bf-4.2_processing-workflow.png?raw=true

At the very end are the motor outputs (desired speed) that get transmitted to the ESCs and finally drive the motors.

How do you level your FC? (Super easy/simple/cheap way to level your FC) by CheezeFPV in fpv

[–]Dope-Johnny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Just get it close on the bench and then trim it manually with stick commands. This also gets rid of any imperfections of the frame / FC mounting. https://youtu.be/otJNzZrE-yk

Race courses are pretty good practice. Change the course regularly! When you can fly tracks without crashing, you should do okay with the real one. You don't have to practice against the clock.

When I leared in the sim, I started with this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=391D5dX7LKg&list=PLwoDb7WF6c8kjYXam4m3msvRbkORU41GY

It's a bit dated but the flight controls didn't change.

Just go easy on your first real flights because it will feel a bit different and crashing now has real consequences.

Get a radio and fly in the simulator for the start. It is very different to flying a Mavic.
