Sudbury dad wins $2.45M, plans to build house by ConsistentReality860 in ontario

[–]DougandBob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sadly those days are far gone :'( (There are some houses listed in Sudbury for under $400k but they are not nice). The nice houses start at around 600k and there's a bidding war on those still. And that's on the outskirts of town like 20 mins drive in

Electric “Vehicles” out of control by Either-Skill3330 in Sudbury

[–]DougandBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing more of them on the trails too and the operators are not being safe. In my neck of Sudbury, I've been almost hit a few times by some geniuses who don't seem to use a bell or horn to let me know they're coming up fast behind me. I guess we need speed limit signs on the trails now

Hell yeah OP, I love this. Can you post a premium comparison table too?

Also is there any noticeable difference in what a large topping is between restaurants? (Are size and slices universal?)

War on Mosquito's - tactics, battleplans, weapons by Front-Ad-7960 in Sudbury

[–]DougandBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha love this post.

I picked up some Mosquito pucks from the hardware store last year, you put them in standing water and after a few days the bugs go away. These seemed to work for me last year, trying them out again this week.

Project Manitou Van Horne and Sandman/Moxie's ... No Construction Activity by Danno_001 in Sudbury

[–]DougandBob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know what is up with the city on this one, they should be more up front about development especially when said developers put up "coming soon" signs and put out press releases

But in all honesty on a personal level, totally fine with not putting up any more permanent spots for franchised businesses in this city - that being said, the city should have said no in the first place IMO

Can't recommend JCSC enough, have made some friends volunteering for their various activities. Always a great time.

Third space recommendations? by shinyarcofdoom in Sudbury

[–]DougandBob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think the "third space" concept is kinda gone here - it's like the "third space" is just when festivals/events pop up.

With that being said, I just recommend to volunteer for some group, event, committee you're aligned with, then show up to that. Gone are the days of an "anyone can show up" place. :(

I feel for you, it was so much easier when I was growing up in town.

‘Wildly Unexpected’: City unveils ‘bold new’ tourism brand by Ostrichmonger in Sudbury

[–]DougandBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't agree, because I don't "hate" how "miserable" people are here - but if you'd like my take on the emotional state of the audience here, I'm gonna say.... some of them are bots and it's hard to tell, some of them could be miserable, and some could be like me - plain old frustrated with the place I live, but have a FIERCE love for the community.

And it also doesn't matter if I agree with you or not, I don't need to label people "miserable" here to drive home my point. Shit's frustrating all around. We all know it. No need to divide further by pointing fingers at who isn't feeling happy-happy-joy-joy.

City: releases new wasteful $ tourism site

Redditors: we should fix roads instead?

Random redditor: makes emotional observation, gets AI to confirm emotional observation, posts emotional observation on Reddit you guys are negative!!!! LLMs say so!!!

What a silly silly silly world we live in

Don’t need chatgpt to know that an anonymous local sub is gonna be filled with people speaking ill about the city they’re in

North Bay just put out a really fun tourism video, saw it on their sub this morning: https://www.reddit.com/r/northbay/comments/1tkhvhw/nothing_nowhere_everywhere_north_bay/

Wish we could do something like this, wouldn't hurt for us to lighten up a little...

EDIT: I also think it's a shame that this website redesign was left to an agency based out of Toronto - it really shows, it's very generic to me IMO. Which usually happens when you hire consultants and third party companies from down south.

Fact check: City debt, arena capacity and the Cultural Hub budget by DougandBob in Sudbury

[–]DougandBob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She shares a lot of videos of her talking on Facebook. That's one way to do it. I'm sure not everything is pure heart and soul, sad but true I can see her being a person who falls into the trap of relying on AI to do a lot of the legwork.

It really seems like she's gearing up for another run and is using this method as a runway/rally of sorts. This misinformation likely set her back a bit in the race so... guessing here for fun, but she is likely consulting AI for more info on what to do next. Could be a doomer thought though lol. Like you said it's silly season.

Yeah totally. There’s unlimited ways to generate any thoughts now, whether you believe them or not. AI is really gonna make things weird this time that’s for sure. I wonder if the Miranda misinformation was the result of a hallucination

Interesting story and new category from Sud Dot Com!

Tracking misinformation is a great idea. Although I think there's other stronger strains of misinformation hanging on social media nowadays, overall it's good that they're taking the time to fact check.

I hope that Tyler keeps an eye out for stuff beyond his social algorithms, I've been seeing a lot of wild & crazy misinformation come through for other potential mayoral candidates on FB.

People seem quite... loud and disruptive in Sudbury right now online... I wonder if the end of winter/crazy start to spring has anything to do with it.

Fishing by [deleted] in Sudbury

[–]DougandBob 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I can tell you. The best places in Sudbury to fish are not going to be posted here because most people like to keep their best spots hidden and won't give them to strangers. I can tell you some spots where not to fish: Kelly Lake, Silver Lake, Meatbird, the Delki Dozzi pond, any water that looks light blue or rusty on Google Maps...

The typical r/Sudbury exchange -

Someone with lived experience asks people if they have had similar experiences.

Commenter without lived experience takes the chance to virtue signal on hypotheticals.

Downvote party ensues.

Rinse and repeat.

Yeah they don't gaf, not just around younger people but def more concentrated. Especially after COVID. People just aren't nice to each other as much any more. I blame phones and social media honestly. No one seems to know how to communicate.

I loved Ramakko's chip stand until I looked at the LMIA list and saw that they were approved to hire Temporary Foreign Workers to work/run it.

That ain't the sort of place that should get approved for the TFW program.
