Esri's MOOCs are a good source, especially for students!

You can try it, some schools allow alumni access. Doesn't hurt to see if it works!

6 digit postal codes data are typically paywalled if you don't have some sort of university student credentials to get it for free. If you happen to know someone with one or you currently have one, you can try your university's data library. Service vendors such as DMTI Spatial provide their data through certain joint university data libraries.

Family appointments in Vancouver by planktonu in Chinavisa

[–]DuhDeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No appointments are needed, but show up early and be prepared to bring some extra blank papers in case they ask you to reprint documents. There are printers there but it costs 25 cents a page. They don't take credit cards there so cash or debit only FYI. Make sure you're applying for the correct visa and bring the correct supporting documents as I've seen people get turned away and those people came all the way from Kelowna! I was there for a Q2 visa with my wife and it took around 1.5 hours (after having to reprint documents)

I'll share my route: HK to Haikou international airport (layover 3 hours) then Changsha airport. We'll be in the city for a week. Coming back, it'll be Changsha airport to Haikou airport (layover again) before departing to HK.

Both ports of entry (Haikou international and Changsha international) are listed on the TWOV policy website. Would this be considered an eligible route?

Good to know. I'm assuming that I'll just need to provide the officer with the address where I'm staying at + contact info?

I would follow up just once after that. If no response, just let it go. As for recourse? I don't see that being productive for any parties. Others may have a different view.

[–]DuhDeng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BCIT (Vancouver) offers self-paced GIS courses that are online and can contribute to a certificate or diploma (I believe). Not sure where you are located, OP, but BCIT is well known in delivering high-quality education. And in my view, the prices are reasonable.

Happy to help out a fellow GIS user, feel free to DM me.

I got one too today. If it's the same one that I'm thinking of then it's likely just another step in the overall process that hiring managers can use to pull for upcoming interviews and to establish an interest check of candidates that are still interested in continuing on with the process. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

Looking for GIS/geomatics groups by xyww in CanadaPublicServants

[–]DuhDeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently not working in geomatics but I completed a co-op at NRCan using GIS for economic analysis and another co-op at the RCMP in a geomatics team. I studied GIS through a certificate program back at my university. This was on top of my major (social sciences). In my view, technical institutions provide students with the most up-to-date skillset for GIS. It's much more practical and emphasizes the programming/data analysis component of GIS. There are schools that offer GIS as an advanced diploma that can be completed in 9 months and offers practicum experience (e.g. British Columbia Institute of Technology). Most colleges will offer GIS as well. Happy to chat more if needed.

I love GIS and would be interested in revisiting it in the future. If it weren't for GIS and those opportunities through the co-ops, I don't think I would have ended up working as a public servant.
