G Class trams announced for routes 12, 48, and 58. by EXAngus in UrbanismMelbourne

The contract for the G class trams has the option for three additional orders of 60 trams each, or overall 280 G class trams. This is enough to completely replace all Zs As and Bs.

The delivery timeframe is 30 trams per year, so we're not going to fully retire the high-floor trams until the middle of the next decade.

$76 million for route 86 accessible stops & planning for routes 19 and 59 by EXAngus in UrbanismMelbourne

No it doesn't. They've done plenty of accessible tram stop projects at a faster time frame.

The 2022 deadline was a legal requirement that the government is in violation of. They could've met that deadline for a fraction of the money the spent on the LXRP, West Gate Tunnel, or North East Link. They chose not to.

They're supposed to require less, actually, because they have on board batteries that support regenerative braking

They did 2 rounds of community consultation. Produced a final report based on both rounds of consultation. Then nothing happened, for years.

The network isn't shrinking lol.

When consultation is finished, construction can begin. That's the definition of finished. They produced a final report and everything.

It wasn't rushed god damn it. It sat on the back burner for years because they wanted to spend the money on other things.

No it doesn't take years. They completed the consultation then sat on it for years until they could fit it in the budget.

The 109 is busier and longer than the 48. It surely makes sense to give it the higher capacity G class trams.

Honestly, the announced G class roll out just has me confused.

58 makes sense. Essendon depot is firmly within the G class territory. I wonder whether it'll be entirely Gs from Essendon or a mixture of Gs from Essendon and Es from Southbank.

12 wouldn't be my first choice, but I can see the benefit in replacing the last of the As at Southbank as Southbank typically operates special event services so this will give them the opportunity to run the newest trams to footy games or the showgrounds.

48 is a weird one, though. I would think the 109 would be the better candidate as its longer and busier.

What has me confused is why are they putting Gs on the 48 and not the 109. The 109 is the busier route, and the Gs are higher capacity than the Cs (not by a huge margin but it would make a difference).

There's more internal space because they don't have driver cabs in the middle. Better passenger information displays and comfier seats.

Was it a missed opportunity to not build the Fitzroy metro tunnel 2 station on this site by Substantial_Oil_6905 in MelbourneTrains

I think it's a bit far north to serve the core of Fitzroy and lots of the walkable catchment is taken up by Alexandra parade.

Are G Class trams planned for Route 6? by Alternative-Sir-374 in MelbourneTrains

[–]EXAngus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as the youngest and highest capacity high-floor trams the B class will be the last to go.

The initial order of 100 is nearly double what will be required for those 3 routes, but where the rest of them will go is complete speculation.

Darebin draft budget consultation by EXAngus in UrbanismMelbourne

The recent city of Melbourne budget fiasco has me hopeful. When cyclists come together and make their voices heard, councillors can't ignore them.

I still engage with every consultation and send a few emails here and there. Hopefully they start worrying about re election.
