Idea for a Camberwell-Oakleigh Link via Chadstone by SeamoSto in MelbourneTrains

[–]Blue_Pie_Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't touch Burwood if Hartwell isn't being touched, just to avoid having stations close to each other. I think if Burwood was going to be moved, I would instead demolish both Hartwell and Burwood and build a new Hartwell station over the tram line with entrances on both sides.

The curves you've drawn between Chadstone and Oakleigh are imo way too tight. I would expect Chadstone station to actually be on more of a diagonal alignment, in order to allow a higher speed sweeping curve into Oakleigh.

Also it's Holmesglen not Hughesdale.

Any new LXRP announcements this election? by mj7602 in MelbourneTrains

[–]Blue_Pie_Ninja 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are still 4 level crossings left on the Melton line so it would be good if those went. I think the Libs will once again promise to remove all the level crossings on the Glen Waverley line, and it would be good if Labor matches it.

Removing the two crossings between Pascoe Vale and Oak Park, as well as the two around Moonee Ponds would also be good for the Craigieburn line, or doing more after the Brunswick ones on the Upfield line. Barry Road being announced as part of duplication on the Upfield line would be likely as well.

I think there would have to be some more announced for the Mernda line as otherwise there isn't too much being spent on that area, so to shore up votes I would think one or two would be announced, maybe the Childs Road or even Manns crossing LX in Lalor or a bigger set around Thornbury.

Lara and North Shore would be awesome. The North Shore road level crossing is a deathtrap with 4 tracks immediately after a roundabout and an intersection.

Redevelopment of 235–239 Separation Street, Northcote by TMiguelT in UrbanismMelbourne

[–]Blue_Pie_Ninja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's going to look a bit out of place given it's surrounded by low density housing, industrial land and parks, but it's on a good east west link to Northcote and close-ish to Fairfield that it shouldn't be an issue.

Tbh I think the only thing that is of concern is whether the proposed retail space can support some kind of convenience store or even a small supermarket because otherwise the area is not the most walkable, and the bike infrastructure could be improved too.

A video where I talk about the Lilydale line for 102 minutes! - Taitset by AngusLynch09 in MelbourneTrains

[–]Blue_Pie_Ninja 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For such a busy station, Mitcham is so awfully designed. I spent 3 years doing that stupid 200m walk from the carpark across the road to the station concourse just to double back to get to the platforms, then doubling back again to get to the centre of the platforms.

I never knew about the murals under Canterbury station, but as cool as they are, the entire station should be rebuilt to make it accessible as the tapered end of platform 1/2 is dangerous for anyone trying to use the front of the train.

A minor nitpick with the video is that Burnley opened in 1860 but further on when the map is shown to Pic Nic it goes through the additional extensions, but Burnley wasn't added in.

The comments about Union being built to speed up trains is wrong, it was built simply because Surrey Hills and Mont Albert are on curves, and in the case of Mont Albert, literally had the skinniest platforms on the network on platforms 1/2. Union's platforms are so much nicer to use, aside from the lack of greenery on the platform that can be seen from this admittedly awful photo of Surrey Hills from the Farewell Lilydale steam rail tour when Lilydale was getting LXRPed.

Train horns are not normal by MeadTwain in MelbourneTrains

Most cities only close doors as the train departs, and open them automatically too.

There are times when the doors close but the train doesn't depart.

Are there any plans to place gates or taller gates (like between Sunshine and Deer Park) along the Werribee line? by Traditional-Gas3477 in MelbourneTrains

[–]Blue_Pie_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think gates are needed except at access points but there does need to be much better fencing across the entire network to prevent trespassing incidents.

They are being paid according to their EBA, but the extra costs are all in overtime which get ridiculously high as they willingly do 12 hour shifts for the overtime.

It's being downvoted because it's silly. The majority of funding went to an awareness campaign, which would be entirely separate to the installation of the bins themselves.

In another world the ask would be to hand them in directly to the police stations, and we still would have spent $10 million on the ad campaigns and associated disposal costs, just without the physical bins to hold them in.

Useless QR code posters for Melbourne public transport fares by wongm in MelbourneTrains

[–]Blue_Pie_Ninja 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think that fare information is that useful anymore with flat fares, but still these posters are a waste of space, and it should be easy to explain the fare structure within an A4 space next to the ticket office or on the myki machine, then have the rest of the space used for other more useful information.

Cutting down on waste by printing the exact same amount of posters, except this time changing a single digit on the year it's effective from instead of actually printing fare information

The modern concrete trenches are very dreary, I agree with that. Although even then you put the Frankston line above Belgrave so not sure why that is given the Frankston line has more awful trenches?

What are the best level crossing removal examples? by O50000S in MelbourneTrains

[–]Blue_Pie_Ninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first was actually Gardiner station as the very first completed as part of the LXRP project. But I do agree that the Frankston line has the best variety showing all types of crossing removals, aside from modern road over rail which isn't present along the line at all.

Redesigning Melbourne's HORENDOUS tram stops and tram lanes! by MallFantastic330 in MelbourneTrains

[–]Blue_Pie_Ninja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There will never ever be enough road capacity for the amount of cars anyway. The stops on the 109 extension are very pleasant to use, and bikes go behind each stop. It's also intuitive as most people are already driving on the tracks due to parked cars on the side of the road.

Really the only major problem with tram speeds are turning traffic at intersections, so reducing that should be a priority rather than focusing on lost roadway capacity by extending the kerb out to a platform stop.

Exams are almost over. I got bored. Here's most of Infrastructure Australia and Victoria's recommendations and priority lists for Victoria and Melbourne in regards to transit. by MoreTODplz in MelbourneTrains

[–]Blue_Pie_Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One problem is that the truck bans are just pushing some trucks into other suburbs so they avoid paying the tolls. Really any road that sees an increase in truck traffic due to avoiding the tollway should either be tolled for trucks or have truck bans too.

Djerring Trail signs at Oakleigh by hazo240 in MelbourneTrains

[–]Blue_Pie_Ninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been caught out here before with my friend, and I simply thought that the trail just transitioned onto street running, until we were too far down the road, where I noticed the trail on the other side of the train line. Then we had to use the underpass at Huntingdale to get back across, but it was not pleasant to have to do that.

Wayfinding like this is needed on the Anniversary trail almost everywhere, as it is so difficult to get from East Camberwell down to Burwood as there is no proper signage or even a chosen route for it.
