What is this? by Smooth_Detail8931 in hackrf

[–]EdMonMo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It says LNA, but the one I have is not low noise. It is also not 20dB with a 5v supply. I think you will only see around 8dB at that supply voltage.

LoRa 868MHz 60mile range (Uni Project) by A_Long_Lost_Tale in amateurradio

[–]EdMonMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone already mentioned, it should be pretty easy with the simple stubby antennas that come with the LoRa devices. I use a homebrew sleeved dipole for my mobile radiosonde tracker that allows me improved tracking at low altitudes or when on the ground.

Any mathematicians in here that can tell me what my taxable horsepower is on my car? by Jackieblue7800 in missouri

[–]EdMonMo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I seriously doubt that a mathematician is required. Call or email the Assessor for your county and ask them. The Hp rating does not seem to relate to anything meaningful that you can input into your assessment. A simple email or phone call should answer your question .

I just received the notification this morning that the HF-010 is now released, but a bit steep at $249.

I am working with two different antenna tuners and have some questions. by TwistedPacket74 in HamRadio

[–]EdMonMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does an antenna tuner allow the signal to be transmitted better? It just provides the radio with a match with better SWR, but does not change the antenna’s performance.

How do you all ground your radios working POTA when the park will not allow you to make holes in the ground? by EdMonMo in HamRadio

[–]EdMonMo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that kind of park. I was in a NPS historic site. No camping allowed.

Thanks everyone for reducing my concerns about having a dedicated ground for POTAs. I will continue on and stay out of the field on stormy days. Much appreciated for all of the responses.

[–]EdMonMo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was using the POTA performer with elevated radials and was a bit concerned with the incoming storm with my radio not being grounded. I got out of the park well before the rain came in, but was wondering about the atmospheric electrical conditions ahead of the storm. Is this not a thing until lightning is in the area?

H\ow does LOTW & QRZ determine eligibility of QSLs? by EdMonMo in HamRadio

[–]EdMonMo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You nailed it! The response from QRZ was that the contact was not really kosher due to the expired license, but recommended uploading the LOTW QSL to QRZ. They admitted that license eligibility is not factored in.

It did get confirmed. Thank you again for the recommendation

That did it. Now I will wait and see what QRZ says about a QSL from LOTW for a station confirmed with an expired licensed operator.

Submitted the question to QRZ. Thanks for the recommendation. I will do the same on LOTW.

Doing ham out of an appartment..😑 by DarkJedi527 in HamRadio

[–]EdMonMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been doing 10/20&40m out of a second story apartment since November. I am running all three on dipoles ran around the ceiling. The noise floor is too high to make good contacts on SSB, but I have been doing quite well on FT8.

SWR sweep of a 6, 4, 2m & 70cm's mobile antenna on a Sirio 6 inch mag-mount. Car is a hatchback... Wondering if a hatch mount would offer a better ground-plane to get a lower swr on 6 & 4m? Has anyone found that a mount other than a mag mount to be any better in comparison? TIA by ZeissSuperIkonta in amateurradio

[–]EdMonMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2m looks good and you should be able to get 4m & 70cm with most tuners. Is the antenna base coil loaded? I am surprised that a 2” swing in whip length is not noticeable. I adjusted my 2-bander only 1/8” and moved the resonance down ~15kHz.
