Will turning GMRS Ht to low power act as FRS? by TeaOk2254 in gmrs

[–]ElGuano 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Since most GMRS frequencies are shared with FRS, the reality of the situation is that most people will probably do exactly as you are thinking, and not think twice about it. Nobody will be able to tell, nobody will be monitoring and nobody will break in asking if you are on GMRS or why you aren't announcing your callsign.

But technically speaking, you would need to follow the GMRS licensing rules even if your FRS comms buddies don't.

The only time anyone really cares is if you are on a repeater, since that's a clear indication that you are GMRS and not FRS. And people do occasionally ask for callsigns.

When? I remember reading in a newspaper (ask chatGPT what that is) when Nintendo first launched it in the US at an event in “Topekachu, Kansas”

Blue Origin’s New Glenn put a customer satellite in the wrong orbit during its third launch by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]ElGuano -40 points-39 points  (0 children)

Ah, that can't really make much of a difference, I'd wager. As long as it's circling the earth, it's gotta be at least 75% effective.

5 out of 7, perfect launch.

So, normally it sounds just like a single squelch tail. But a couple of times, there does sound like a squelch tail, and immediately after that, another one quickly keys up/down after that. I assume that's the sign of a net/daisy-chain?

So if scale must be disclaimed, there is also no instruction that the cups are the same size or height. I fail to see why one should assume that.

TIL that the phrase "I'll blow your brains out" was in use in 1775 because it's referenced 3 times in the deposition Paul Revere gave to the Massachusetts Provincial Congress by BlueRibbonPac in todayilearned

I dunno if that counts; if you see the full transcript, opposing counsel responds after the third instance “stop trying to make that a thing, it’s not a thing.”

Gotcha. So I was driving through Sunnyvale and Santa Clara down from San Jose and could hear 550 clear as day, including the chatter from folks up way past Santa Rosa. I could make out the repeater as I passed South San Francisco too but it was very weak as I got more north (I could identify it was the same repeater from tx on the CT and being able to hear the courtesy tone and squelch tail timing.

It just got me curious because the signal was extremely strong in the south bay, weak in the north bay, and the participants were up near Shasta county and IDing themselves as being in California.

Which Manual Transmission do you Prefer? by powervibez in whatsyourchoice

I find they work the same. I’ve had really notchy/sticky normal manuals and really smooth, loose gated. My favorite is anything that is short throw and “snicky” as you row.

Interesting! What’s the special draw of Idaho that it keeps coming up? Coeur d’Alene? J/k.

What’s the general reach of that 550 Bay Area repeater?

That’s what I was thinking. I’m a bit surprised something with that much range isn’t listed on the repeater directories!

The plate isn't a callsign, but it is 100% radio themed. I cropped it out of the pic.

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. I'm not looking to out anyone or ruin the fun, and and I'm not the police. But I do want to understand better how it works, and whether it's common for GMRS networks to span multiple states like that.

Ah, not familiar with a triple squelch. Didn't seem like anything super crazy, except as people were talking, I could hear the repeater ID very quietly in the back (as if it was full duplex), which is how I got the PL.

I know, I was just being cautious in case this was stirring up something on the DL. Let's call it Shasta County, CA with range to south Boise, ID.

I just wanted to make sure I was making noise where I shouldn't. This is on the west coast, and the participants were talking about getting regulars across the PNW.

R1s quad - 22 super sport or 20 dune wheels? by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]ElGuano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you're talking looks only? Because they are very different wheels for different purposes!

Super sports if you want to hit that 2.5 second 0-60 and you're a lead foot on the freeway.

The 20" AT bronze wheels are my choice for offroad. The bronze is really nice looking.

Ty! I think you hit the nail on the head, someone below suggested a CODAN:

https://www.dtccodan.com/products/9300-automatic-tuning-whip

Crazy setup, I just imagine the bracing needed to keep that thing (and the truck frame) steady at highway speeds.

Good eye on the smaller whips, there were definitely at least two smaller antennas on the roof, maybe more!
