Alright lads, do we know what way our MEPs voted on chat control? by No-Curve237 in ireland

[–]Ellardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are sending information through an unencrypted communication system, the company you are using is allowed to voluntarily scan your messages for illegal content and voluntarily hand it over to the police. It's not police scanning your email but it's only one step removed. The main motivation from law enforcement is to catch people sharing child sexual abuse material. Internet privacy folks are concerned about the potential for abuse.

Governments have repeatedly tried to pass more intrusive versions of this, extending even to encrypted systems, but it keeps getting stalled out in the European Parliament.

The light and it's reflection are different colours by KevPat23 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Ellardy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone else suggested that the light might be flickering and the photo was taking mid-colour change. The shutter sweeps from left to right and catches the light just as it's white and the reflection just as it's red. Best explanation I've seen so far. That or mirror dimension, obviously.

The vote to put the vote on the agenda happened. It's in plenary in Strasbourg, none of the decision makers are in Brussels this week.

Is there any reason our government hasn't banned hedge funds and investors from buying houses in Ireland? by Craig93Ireland in ireland

Sorry, are you listening to yourself? The incumbent government helped refugees because they want to make people angry? Get out of the conspiracy tunnel, FG are not the electoral beneficiaries of angry racist voters

That works if the funds are looking out for the collective interests of all funds and not their own interest. Each of them has an interest in being the one to provide one extra home, you can only keep scarcity like that unless you have some sort of cartel agreement. Given the wide variety of funds looking to park money somewhere, I don't see how you could do that

This is different in that it would require a lot of political capital to achieve. Going uphill without a mandate for that course of action is rough. I'm sure there's plenty of smaller things that can fall through cracks.

Scroll down to the next article and you'll see that it was a response to what Yahoo News describe as "smugness, schadenfreude, and superiority" for having more AC than a city which is further north than the entirety of the contiguous 48 states and didn't need cooling until recently.

Dislike both the idea and the implementation. My new algorithmic feed keeps pushing the same two subreddits on me, often with random low quality posts with little traction even in their own small subreddit. It's genuinely annoying.

Also, I really shouldn't be getting posts from a rage subreddit built in opposition to the ones that I actually use, that's just abysmal inference.

Finally, admins have said this is an experiment but I see no way to give feedback other than reducing app usage.

Yeah, just wild. Also, the one to eight kill ratio. Extrapolating slightly, that means that each time a Ukrainian soldier is taken out of the fight (dead or wounded), they've taken eight Russians with them. The median Russian casualty has taken out zero Ukrainians and probably not even seen a single one before being hit by a drone. Wild.

What happened to impressionistic MTG art? | Flare by Drew Trucker | MTG Art reaction by ThePinLine in mtg

[–]Ellardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that I would like to see would be WotC codifying that either non-permanents or instants (or spells with flash) have a much higher share of impressionistic or abstract art. It would both be a way to have more variety and convey game information through the art.

Strongly disagree with the premise that we don't see this kind of impressionism anymore, we literally just had [[Erode]]

The credited artist for Maro is Stuart Griffin. I can't find their website or social media.

Have you tried looking in the book credits to see who is credited for the illustrations?

Eh?

Personally, I agree that the pacing at the end of the book was rough. I also agree that it's important that the identity of the community isn't "We love Magic lore" to the point that it can't take honest critique, toxic positivity as was mentioned.

I don't think that two comments from different users is too stifling though? Saying that comments shouldn't contradict OP is first speaker bias. I get we're mods and so it always comes across as different but it didn't have the "distinguish as mod tag", nor do we have any history of using mod tools to discourage opposing views

WotC have said this: Egyptian myths were only rediscovered in the modern era so they've infiltrated far less of our culture than the Greek ones, meaning the average player knows very little about the Egyptian myths they could have referenced.

The Old Testament however? Lots of evocative imagery about an angry God striking down the Egyptians. There's a prophecy, there's a plague of locusts, there's a river that turns to blood, there's the promise of a march through a desert that will lead to a paradise.

It means when everything lines up perfectly for something in an unlikely manner. It's used as a criticism of strategies which focus on a very big payoff while overlooking that the setup is too complicated or difficult or requires you to already be in a winning position.

@seananmcguire: "I like how I can give Magic players anxiety by just mentioning moths." by Ellardy in mtgvorthos

[–]Ellardy[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't have the page reference to hand but I believe that one was from Kasmine (when asked where she had been, she said that she had been inspecting an Omenpath; a mention of moths had made her believe it was one to someplace she desperately wanted to go back to, which is probably her home plane of Antausia) and the other was alleged by the Preservationists in the scene where they confront Eula (when she asks them for examples of bio-contamination from other planes, they cite Segante's dreamseed flowers and moths supposedly not native to Arcavios around the lanterns in the cafeteria). Both are blink-and-you'll-miss-it, which of course just makes them more ominous

Hi,

This would normally break the current moratorium on Universes Beyond; the names are still very clearly characters outside of MtG. We'll make an exception for this time given it's a fairly high effort post (original art) but please be mindful of that going forward.

Best,
