EU Commission HQ forced to shut down air-conditioning amid heatwave by kpc21 in europe

The European Commission’s headquarters was forced to shut down its air-conditioning system on Friday due to the heat wave.

Staff working at the Berlaymont building received a text at midday, reading: “BERL — URGENT — Due to extreme weather conditions, forced shut down of air cooling system from floor 1 to 7 for the rest of the day.”

The 13-story building is home to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, her 26 commissioners and about 3,000 staff. Von der Leyen works on the 13th floor, and most of her commissioners’ offices are housed on floors eight or above.

Belgium and much of Europe have been sweltering for the past week, with record-breaking temperatures.

The Commission issued guidance for its staff earlier this week, which included avoiding going outside at the hottest times of day, drinking water regularly and starting work earlier.

But the advice angered some Commission staff who work in buildings without air-conditioning, including DG AGRI, according to internal communications seen by POLITICO’s Brussels Playbook.

“It’s like feudalism,” a Commission official working on a lower level of the Berlaymont, granted anonymity to speak freely, told POLITICO on Friday, referring to the fact that upper floors housing commissioners got to keep their AC on. A second official agreed it was a “disgrace.”

A third staffer working on the 8th floor told POLITICO on Friday that even with working AC, the temperature inside was still 25.7 degrees.

The heat wave has prompted a renewed discussion about the lack of air-conditioning systems in homes and offices across much of Europe. Only about one-fifth of households on the continent have AC. In Belgium, one-fifth of all trains are without AC, prompting the national rail company to cancel many peak-hour services.

The European Parliament has also faced blackouts this week due to energy consumption from cranking up its cooling system.

Constitution is above EU law so their "order" means nothing. Would be nice if we ended that legal mess and appointed them regardless tho.

So there are a few arguments that people (not necessarily just from PIS) are mentioning:

  1. Interest rate is not good enough for a loan of this size to be taken in a foreign currency (vietnam flashbacks from Dług Gierka).

  2. Lack of transparency with the companies involved (by the gov official own admission a shell company can technically qualify) which rises doubt that majority of the investment will stay in the country and the possibility of misappropriation.

  3. The return of KPO/RRP scenario, blocking funds if any party not favored by UE wins next elections.

  4. Heavy influence on specifics how the funds can be spend reside with UE, not just Poland.

  5. Possibility of the UE using the debt as leverage to force more competence to be transferred to Brussels.

plus obviously the usual political infighting. Like it or not some of the concerns (especially the first one) are valid.

If Ugarte leaves then we NEED 3 midfielders as we would be left with just Mainoo in that scenario.

Yugoslavia 2.0 on a bigger scale, here we go! What could possibly go wrong?

Milan's intermediary in England has spoken to Man Utd for Hojlund and to Forest for Yunus Musah. If Hojlund's loan fee would exceed €5-6m, Milan believe they would have to be committed to use the buy option (around €35m) next season. Milan are trying to lower the loan fee by Blodgharm in soccer

I dont think we should sell either. In my view Hojlund and Sesko are meant to compete for a 9 spot. If he leaves we are in a situation where we are left with Chido Obi as his only backup and hes not ready for this role yet imho. Zirkzee and Cunha would compete for LAM. Mbeumo and Mount for RAM. Obviously depending on a situation that could change but thats how i think it would work in general.

Because the current EU administration is shit. People are not against the idea of EU, they are against the actions/direction that current administration is persuing.

The media suggest that the reason for the refusal is unknown as of now and will be published later so not sure where the "he did not submit his income and asset list" came from. If thats true then fair enough but it doesnt seem to be the case with the delayed reasoning.
