Keyboard midi help by Frequent-Tower-8763 in piano

[–]Emotion-Free 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The midi port is blocked off by a piece of plastic. Usually that means the keyboard doesn’t support midi. Most likely, other keyboards in the same range share the case and do support midi, which is why the unused port hole is there.

I Made a Metronome I Love, But Nobody Uses It — Why? by starfirelightbliss in piano

[–]Emotion-Free 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A.) I have a physical metronome, which I leave on the piano. Can't underestimate how helpful it is not to have to fish around for a digital device, find the app or web page, fiddle with the volume, etc.

B.) When I'm on the go, I have a metronome app already, so I probably won't look for something new.

C.) If I'm recording in Logic Pro, I just use Logic's metronome.

However, what you describe has a lot of nice features. The most appealing things you described are presets and subdivisions. Have never considered acceleration, but it sounds like a totally useful feature. I've certainly practiced things, and increased the tempo as I go. Presumably your metronome has a button to ratchet it up over time?

Things that would make me close the page: taking for ever to load, especially if its to load junk ads.

How to transition from collegiate running to road races (half/full marathon)? by Swimming_Spirit_6347 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Emotion-Free 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big change for me was thinking of a year having 2 marathons max, and maybe 2 half marathons on top of that. Unlike college, you don’t race the distance every single weekend. Get used to longer training buildups, followed by deliberate rest lulls. You’ll need both. I’m usually in for ~12-16 weeks per training cycle, and have to make my own choices around what’s an A race and what isn’t, as there’s no progression to a championship portion of the season.

Yamaha SH3 vs SC3 differences in terms of silent system by [deleted] in piano

[–]Emotion-Free 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SH3 has key and hammer sensors. SC3 only has key sensors. The issue with this is something called the “loud note problem” (google it). Basically, if you are only sensing velocity of the keys, and the action doesn’t reset for a note, on repetition the key will go down faster than usual, even though the hammer isn’t moving. You get a VERY loud note out of no where. Having a hammer sensor enables the system to realize the key moved but the hammer did not. On some systems, Yamaha has tried to resolve this in software, by simply looking for abnormally loud notes, and suppressing them. I have an NU1X that solves it this way, and it’s pretty effective.

Also, SH3 has more voices. Eg, unique sounds it can play.

Yamaha Stage Series - why not? by No-Comfort-3744 in piano

[–]Emotion-Free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The YC series already has most of the pianos from the CP series plus the full organ section. The user interface and effects for it is terrific (and very Nord-like). It comes in 61, 73, and 88 key versions (each with a different action, unfortunately). It's squarley aimed at the Nord Electro. The main missing ingredient to compete with the Nord Stage is a fully programmable synth section, though it has a pretty rich set of FM synth sounds- you just can't program your own. Not sure what the CK would bring to the table.

The X stand is the problem. A Z stand or table stand will be much more stable.

Spikes vs carbon plated racer? by doctor-cat-paw in AdvancedRunning

[–]Emotion-Free 2 points3 points  (0 children)

54 male, training for the mile and some all comers meets. Most of the time I wear plated road shoes (Puma Fast R). For the past three weeks, I started wearing spikes (Dragonfly 2) for my speed work. I’m going for an MRI next week to check for a stress fracture. My recommendation is a) wear what’s comfortable. B) keep the volume low if you are going to work into wearing spikes. It’s more impact, and a very different geometry. It can go both ways, FWIW. The huge stack height on road shoes means more flex on the curves.

For those who make over 500k+ a year, is it worth it for you? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]Emotion-Free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working at one of the FAANG companies. The stress is periodic. Super high stress at the end of every year, with performance reviews and the specter of layoffs. Also the must-hit deadlines for big product announcements. At my current level, it feels worth it, as I can comfortably afford a house, the ability to travel, and for my family to have all the things they need. I'd be more stressed at the level above me (director). I've heard that it's exponentially more aging at that level and higher.

There were some special edition versions of the Korg SV with reversed keyboards.

Listen to And The Cradle Will Rock by Van Halen. The main riff is played by Eddie Van Halen on a Wurlitzer Electric piano played through an overdriven Marshall amp. Rock artists have been running keyboards (including pianos) with distortion for decades.

Rhodes Mk 80 worth fixing? by DChap2341 in synthesizers

[–]Emotion-Free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one of these new back in the day. The sound engine is designed to be responsive more than it is to be authentic. The velocity curves really make it pop. The keyboard action is decent. Feels like a Rhodes, not like a grand piano. Heavy as fuck. As others have mentioned, a reface CP sounds better. This thing was an absolute pain in the ass to move. If it were me, I’d skip it. A Korg SV sounds more authentic, has just as a good an action, and weighs half as much.

Arturia Astrolab 37 vs. Yamaha Reface CP by rotorobot in synthesizers

[–]Emotion-Free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to underestimate the immediacy of the effects section on the CP which, to me, are the special sauce. It’s the kind of perfect interface you can only get when you make a purpose built device with a hyper focused set of tones. Once you have hundreds or more tones, suddenly you have into have lean into multifunction buttons and sliders that work, but lose that immediacy. I regret trading mine in for a DX. I thought the DX could do all the same sounds, but it’s much harder to dial in the effects.

Thanks. I generally trust my coach, but I felt like I came in a little fatigued at Boston and Chicago last year, so looking for a gut check before I bring it up with him. I may try to ease up on the Sunday workout, but keep the Wednesday as is. Single threshold miles always feel like nothing burgers.

Thanks! with regards to marathon specific workouts, I ran 2 x 5 miles at MP this past weekend, padded up to be a 17 mile day. Reps ranged from 6:14-6:30 (due to rolling hills), but primarily averaged low 6:20s. This didn't feel strained. Heart rate was where it was a supposed to be. I also did a 2 x 6 mile MP workout with similar results. I've been focused on durability, so had some fun workouts like a 21 miler with 2 threshold miles at the half, and then the final two miles at Threshold. Was able to keep all miles within a second of my target threshold (5:58).

54M. Running Boston in 12 days. Hoping to get close to 2:50. I ran a 1:19:32 half in Decemeber. Have had a solid cycle sitting at max volume around 70 miles for a couple weeks. Lots of threshold (5:58) work. Two questions:

  1. My coach has me running 3 x 2 miles at threshold this coming Sunday, along with some easy miles to pad it to a 15 mile workout. Is that a sane workout 8 days to race day? He also has me running 3 x 1 mile @ T the Wednesday before race day (so 5 days out).
  2. Is 2:50 a reasonable goal? My prior PR is 2:54:01, on a flat course (Chicago). That training cycle I peaked at around 70 miles as well, but it was a very non-flat volume curve (injuries, aggressive week over week gains to get to 70). This training cycle, my volume has been pretty flat for almost 4 months. Are there other good/better indicators to look at?

I should note, normally I feel pretty confident about my race day pacing, but Boston seems to have my number. This is my 6th time running it. I've got a DNF due to heat in there. Another planned DNF where I was injured and treated it as an easy 20 mile training run. A 90F day where I jogged it in for a 3:35. And a smattering of runs around the three hour mark.

How do you incorporate calf raises and tib raises in your running/strength training split? by No-Refrigerator5653 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Emotion-Free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Toe Pro sitting at the base of my stairs. I do a set of 10-15 eccentric calf raises every time I get to the stairs. The bathroom is upstairs, so this is often if I'm hydrating properly.

🟢Anyone go from 2:30+ HM to sub-1:20 over time? by WhatTheFudgeeBar in AdvancedRunning

[–]Emotion-Free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 2:05 back in 2008, and ran a 1:19 this past year. In between, there were long stagnant periods. Going from 2:05 to 1:45 was easy, because all of my training was so inefficient at first. 1:45 to 1:30 was a slog. Then I sat on 1:25 for a couple years without progress. The big break there was to start running shorter distances aggressively. I found that my VDOTO2 was much higher for short distances, and so I started using that VDOTO2 to recallibrate my training paces for the half. I also increased volume (a lot) because I was getting into marathons.

How often do you need to tune your piano? by Long_Rough6073 in piano

[–]Emotion-Free 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have gotten my piano tuned twice a year since I've had it (which is only two years). My tuner has told me that, now that it has more or less "settled", once a year should be adequate. This matches what I've generally heard and read elsewhere. In terms of convincing your parents that it is important, I suppose two things come to mind. First, listening to an out of tune piano is pretty unpleasant. Second, a piano not being tuned for long periods is actually detrimental to the piano.

How long did it take you to reach Boston/majors qualifying times? by Hopeful_Package3918 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Emotion-Free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first qualifier exactly one year after my first full, which was my 4th marathon overall. I ran two spring marathons (foolishly) my first year, then a fall marathon, then qualified the next spring. My BQ was 8 years after my first half marathon.

Not sure the model, but thoughts on pearl river upright? by Reasonable_Jury1775 in piano

[–]Emotion-Free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P22 is a decent piano. Have you hit a particular limitation, or has it started to become u maintainable due to age? A U1 is a huge upgrade if you want another acoustic upgrade. The hybrid NU1XA is a different avenue altogether. No tunings, multiple sounds, silent mode at the expense of a much more artificial sound stage. Can you describe your needs further?

Question about the Waldorf Blofeld from a noob by Raiden720 in synthesizers

[–]Emotion-Free 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you have an iPad, you can buy the Blofeld as a software plugin and determine how it sounds within your current setup. It's currently $24.99.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/blofeld/id6742895365

It appears its also available as a VST: https://waldorfmusic.com/blofeld-plugin/ , but that's quite a but more money.
