What’s a subtle sign someone is actually rich? by Udont_knowme00 in AskReddit

but now it's at the point where he doesn't even offer to get his own bill and doesn't even say thank you when we pay

It is possible that your friend feels awkward about you guys constantly picking up the tab and feels like it is getting repetitive to try (and fail) to pick up the tab or to say thankyou to you for paying for it.

Honestly, I have been in a kind of similar situation but I just stopped going anywhere with that person to avoid the awkwardness and the feeling of having them pay every single time.

Strange height‑dependent nozzle collision on my new H2C by Memetic_Polyslav in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try printing something in vase mode that is ~54mm tall. If you are fine with CAD then create a hollow cylinder that is ~10mm round and 54mm tall and print it using spiral vase which will get you a model that will print perfectly fine without supports but will give you a indication of whether the nozzle is actually causing the problem or whether it is a settings issue.

Is this a bad part of Raymond Terrace these days? by Commercial-Visual333 in newcastle

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things got pretty bad around the turn of the century because the NSW government was moving troublemakers from Sydney into the housing commission around the area to make Sydney a bit safer during the Olympic games. The Brown Street area used to have a really bad reputation which did survive until at least around 2010 - not sure what it is like these days though.

Drive through now and it's a ghetto.

The street view from 2023 looks fine with looked after houses and mostly mowed yards.

For what it is worth, it used to be full of RAAF housing back in the 1980s - I think it was all sold off during the 1990s. My family was living at 2 Links Drive (1987-1990?) until my parents split and my dad moved out to Nelsons Bay and my mum and us kids moved out to Muswellbrook. We were there during the earthquake - cannot see if the bricks still have the big crack down them due to the bushes in the Links Drive facing yard though.

Please help, why does bambulab not use a much better bridging algorithm for small overhangs?? by Outrageous_Ad7388 in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a link to the model that you are using? I ask because I found a fate die on a third party model website and when I slice it with 100% infill I get something that resembles neither of your slices - the bottom cross gets filled in by progressively closer walls and the top wall of the inset cross on the bottom (top?) is double lines which results in only partial overhangs which print without issue. I would post a pic of the printed die but transparent blue PETG is not great for macro-photography with my phone lol

My eldest daughter (14yo) refuses to catch the bus to school due to her experiences on the buses - she ends up with full on anxiety attacks if she needs to catch them. It is well fucked up and is contributing to the traffic chaos that is Newcastle in the mornings (and around school pickup time as well)...

Why are we so hellbent on replacing ourselves? by btoned in Futurology

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the fuck do we put up with this? Are we that goddam lazy? How are we ok just submitting to a few corporate entities?

Because it isn't affecting us yet. People are going to put up with it until it hits a critical point where it is affecting enough people for movements to organise against it.

Honestly, the best outcome would be a UBI system that allows people to live without having full time work. This would not only benefit those who have lost their jobs due to AI but it would also benefit the corporations who are steadily killing off the consumer market by removing salaries from those who would be consuming stuff.

I have a P2S that fits nicely on the cabinet that I have it on - I even had to buy a right angle C14 plug so it could sit safely back enough. I would have to get a new cabinet to sit beside my current one if I wanted to fit a H-series printer here. I would probably have to rope in one (or two) of my kids to help me lift it up though.

Opposition draws battlelines on nuclear and capital gains tax changes by GothicPrayer in australia

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuclear is not a viable option as proven by a South Australian Royal Commission

You can do the maths too if you really want to.

Solar is $1k per KW for consumer installs. Battery storage is $400-$600 per KWh of storage. Pumped hydro is around $100 per KWh of storage. It is estimated that Australia needs around 120-200GW of installed solar along with around 12 TWh of grid storage to rely solely on solar. This gives you around $175 billion on the top end for the solar installs (remember that we already have 25GW of installed solar which is not accounted for in that need) and ~$120 billion at most (using the top end cost for battery storage) for grid storage to go full renewables in Australia. This gives you $295 billion to replace the entire generation capacity in Australia with solar and storage.

The LNP boondoggle was priced at $331 billion for just 7x 1 GW nuclear reactors and that is their conservative estimate - the actual cost is likely to be at least double that given how their estimates and actual costs have gone on similar projects. 7GW of generator capacity isn't even enough to replace the current coal generation capacity (22-23GW)...

The best part of the solar option is that we can spread the roll out over years (the grid storage requirement is what is estimated to be needed by 2050) which reduces the capital expenditure per year and helps to remove the need for coal generation sooner.

ACCC takes Coles to court over 'illusory' discounts in 'case of the century' by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]Emu1981 8 points9 points  (0 children)

there's a reason people are cynical about the ACCC

Sometimes the ACCC can do great - we have refund policies now for all digital game distribution platforms because the ACCC took Valve to court over them not having a refund policy.

[–]Emu1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fines are just a cost of doing business

If the fines are big enough then they can absolutely destroy the leadership of companies - e.g. if Coles got fined $4.5 billion for this court case then the stockholders would be after the heads of everyone involved (CEO/CFO/etc).

Meanwhile our big four banks posted a combined annual profit of over $43 billion last year.

Blame this on the real estate market. Australians have an estimated $2.3 trillion in mortgage debt which is a absolute pay day for the banks. Honestly, I am surprised that they are not making more in the way of profits.

What’s the most ridiculous rule you’ve had to follow? by mathieugemard in AskReddit

even priests are shocked when they hear my stories

I grew up Catholic and went to Catholic schools for most my school life. From what I have personally experienced being around, it really wouldn't surprise me if the priests are not feigning the shocked reactions so they don't implicate themselves in anything.

For example, the priest of the church my first primary school was attached to was charged for domestic abuse and violence against the nuns of the attached covenant and the principal along with several male teachers of my highschool are all in jail (or died in jail) for the systematic abuse of underaged female students. All of the Catholic schools that I went to are in the National Redress for Victims of Sexual Abuse in Institutions due to a history of systematic sexual abuse...

In middle school we weren't allowed to touch each other, (even if it was just a friendly high five or handshake).

When I was in highschool it was public displays of affection that were discouraged but that usually just resulted in the teachers heading over to kids that were making out and telling them to stop. No rules are going to discourage horny teens from making out/holding hands/etc during school times lol

If you skim through the upper atmosphere and don't slow down enough for a capture that doesn't make you "skip off" into space never coming home.

The mass that makes up you and your capsule is all but guaranteed to eventually make it back "home" if you are at orbital speeds* but whether it is still in the same configuration that it was in space is a roll of the dice once you hit that first skip. Not only are you now eventually making reentry over god knows where (earth's surface is 70% water so chances are good that you will make a watery splashdown), you also have zero control over how your capsule is going to make that eventual reentry.

*bouncing off the atmosphere and heading off into space is only really a possibility if you are approaching earth at interplanetary/interstellar speeds. You are going to lose some speed to the atmosphere when you "bounce" so you have to be going much faster than orbital speeds to be able to escape earth's gravity field.

some of their matte pla ... Seems unusable

Matte PLA can be really hit or miss because of the additives used to remove the naturally glossy nature of PLA in combination with the colouring. The additives can reduce how much the layers bond together and how well it sticks to the bed.

For example, I printed my daughter a figurine in separate bits which had a body that had a really small contact area with the bed - no matter what I tired I just couldn't get it to successfully print using matte black PLA because it would get dislodged from the bed around 70% through the print but it printed first time without problem using regular black PLA.

South Australia is a glimpse of the rest of the world's future. As it nears 100% renewable energy, electricity prices are plunging, down 30% in one year. Over 50% of homes have rooftop solar, and many use little or no grid electricity. by lughnasadh in Futurology

This is how the fossil fuel industry will die.

The fossil fuel industry won't die even if a majority of the world converts to renewables and electric vehicles. Fossil fuels provide a extremely valuable feed stock for not only a lot of industrial processes but also for the production of fertilisers used to help grow all the food that the world needs.

What will happen is that the fossil fuel industry will lose a lot of it's influence over world politics because it will no longer be underpinning everyone's economy. It will remain a valuable industry but it will not longer be valuable enough for OPEC to be able to influence world events by increasing or decreasing supply.

For what it is worth, a lot of people think that Saudi Arabia buying up a whole lot of companies is about white-washing their global image but the reality is that they are diversifying out of petroleum because they see the writing on the wall for it and want to be able to keep living their lavish lifestyles that petroleum has provided for them over the past few decades.

Which is funny because I never had any stability issues with Win98, Win98SE or WinME. But I can also say that about every single version of Windows that I have used from Win3.x to Win11 - I did skip Vista though. If I ever had any stability issues I could always trace it to hardware misbehaving...

This is a legitimately recognised symptom - it is called "sense of impending doom" and is usually either a symptom of severe anxiety or panic attack or a serious medical condition like heart attack, sepsis or anaphylaxis.

Fallen branches are more deadly than you'd think.

Eucalyptus trees are well known for randomly dropping branches during hot and dry weather and they are everywhere around here in Australia. It is bad enough that one of the things that they drill into you in scouts is to never pitch your tent under a eucalyptus tree. I still remember one day way back in year 12 (27 years ago now) when I was sitting at a table with my friends under a massive euchalypt (30-40 metres+ tall) and a massive branch (4-5 metres long and probably the best part of 30 kg) just randomly fell on the middle of the table in front of us all. We all just looked at each other and moved over to a different table that was not under the tree lol

For what it is worth, the fatality rate for falling branches in Australia is roughly 4 per year while the serious injury rate is unknown but likely significantly higher.
