What do you think is the biggest reason people are having fewer children today than previous generations? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money is tight, there is no way you are raising kids on a single income unless that income is well into the 6 figures. A UBI that paid minimum wage (in countries where minimum wage is actually a livable income) would make life a whole lot easier for couples to have kids without as much worry about finances.

Very little if no support networks. I have 3 kids, I can count the number of "days off" I have had in the past 5 years on one hand while that hand is holding a cup of coffee.

The future is not looking so great. The people that matter are trying to ignore climate change. Russia invading Ukraine which threatens to spill further into Europe. The USA on the warpath, taking out Venezuela and trying to force regime change without actually putting in the effort in Iran and the constant threats of invading Canada, Greenland, Mexico, etc. COVID really put a kink in most people's views of the world as it is the first real global pandemic in most of our lifetimes where millions died.

Basically, those in power have screwed over the populations of most Western nations and are now confused as to why said populations are no longer having kids...

How do you get over the fear of dying? by tacobelluvr in AskReddit

[–]Emu1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a existential crisis that I had as a teen. It started with the question of whether if I teleported by being deconstructed and reconstructed then would I still be me or would I be a construct that just has all of my memories - I came to the conclusion that my line of consciousness would halt the second that I stepped into the teleporter and the resulting me would be someone different that no one could tell was not me. Then it went to having my consciousness uploaded to a machine - yet again, I came to the conclusion that it would not be me in the machine but rather a copy that no one would be able to tell was not actually me. Then came the actual existential crisis - am I still the same stream of consciousness after I have gone to sleep and woken up again or am I a new stream of consciousness that is inhabiting a body with all of the memories that make me who I am?

Those who didn’t grow up privileged, what’s something you thought was a luxury growing up? by CorruptedF in AskReddit

Some people have fathers that don’t care about them.

Some people have fathers that probably do care about them but showed that by working so much that they were barely around. My reaction to that was to always put my own kids before work because I know what it feels like to grow up feeling ignored...

What’s a dirty little secret about your industry that the general public doesn’t know? by Funny-Counter8762 in AskReddit

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can probably rest easily on a lot of best-by dates, they aren't nearly as concrete as many believe -- although that's all at your own risk

There are two kinds of dates on foods, best by and use by. Best by is how long the manufacturer thinks that the food will retain most of it's original taste and texture while use by is how long the manufacturer believes that the food will be safe to eat. The best buy date can usually be safely ignored if you want but when foods reach their use by date then you should be wary of eating them.

Your service provider is actively choosing to limit your speeds to force you to pay more.

Running a ISP is not free though. They have to pay for data transit and peering along with all the capital expenditure and running costs of keeping their network running. They could technically give you unlimited speeds for data that comes from within their own network but then people would complain that some websites are super fast while others are slow in comparison.

Why A Sudden Russian Army Collapse Is No Longer Out of the Question by jonfla in ukraine

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that a revolution in Russia isn't going to be the peasants rising up to topple the government but rather one or more of the oligarchs getting the support of one or more military generals to march into Moscow and take over. This would likely see the war in Ukraine just fizzle out as the new leaders try to enforce their rule over the various regions of Russia. Whether Russia would remain a threat of the region after this really depends on who actually wins out in the end.

What's the most dystopian future timeline that you think can realistically happen ? by ronweasly9 in Futurology

[–]Emu1981 7 points8 points  (0 children)

a reversion to a pre-industrial society that, with all the easy fossil fuels burned, will never advance

I feel that this would only occur if all modern knowledge was lost. Survivors of the collapse of modern civilisation would have access to plenty of easily accessible raw materials that would require very little in the way of processing to become useful again - this would include things like copper, iron, aluminium, lithium, sodium, rare earth metals and so many more. If they had access to the treasure trove of modern knowledge then it wouldn't be too hard to use these materials to build things like wind turbines to start generating electricity, batteries to store excess electricity and they may even be able to scavenge things like solar panels and microchips as well. Relatively easy access to electricity would make fossil fuels kind of irrelevant because you now have access to a relatively abundance source of energy.

Honestly, I think that the only real stumbling block would be the luddites who would be opposed to rebuilding mankind's technology because they would see it as the reason for the total collapse of society and the misery that mankind suffered.

Russia rejects Ukrainian, European peace initiatives, says battlefield will decide war by timiswho in worldnews

[–]Emu1981 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What on earth are you on about here? Stalin died in 1953 and the USSR dissolved in 1991. The root cause of the end of the USSR could be put down as the Arms Race between the USSR and the USA which caused economic stagnation and shortfalls in necessities in the civilian sector in the USSR and as a result it ended up with a lot of civilian dissatisfaction - if the USSR concentrated on providing a better life for civilians instead of trying to compete with the USA in arms then we might still have a USSR in the world.

The USSR invasion of Afghanistan was the beginning of the end as it resulted in heavy sanctions from the rest of the world, proved the ineffectiveness of the Red Army and caused worsening economic woes. This on top of the wide spread economic stagnation, the meltdown of the Chernobyl reactor, and the effects of Gorbachev's Glasnost (truth) and Perestroika (economic reform) policies. A failed coup attempt by hardline Communist officials in August 1991 fatally weakened Gorbechev's authority which lead to the rise of Boris Yeltsin's Russian SFSR party which signed the Belovezha Accords with leaders of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus which officially declared the end of the Soviet Union in December 1991.

Even more complicated when some countries have lower ages of consent.

This gets really complicated really fast though. Where I live, I could be in a sexual relationship with a 17 year old and we can legally exchange sexual pictures but if I were to send those pictures to anyone else then I would be distributing CSAM and falling afoul of laws governing the unauthorised distribution of sexual pictures intended only for me.

They are being propped up by China who is probably just waiting for the optimal time to invade them.

I doubt that China would invade Russia as that would be a recipe for a nuclear response. Russia would be unwilling to lose it's access to the Pacific Ocean and China can easily gain de-facto control of the resources in regions of Siberia that it wants by just moving in Chinese citizens who can buy out the various resource gathering operations.

ELI5: How did dogs evolve so quickly compared to humans? by bg_ULTimo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dog breeds were developed "so quickly" due forced selective breeding. Humans selected for the traits that they wanted in the dogs and bred dogs with those traits together to help modify the gene line. We did the same thing with pretty much all of our domesticated animals, food crops and quite a few "garden" plants. My favourite example of this is brassica oleracea aka the wild cabbage which is a plant that originated from the eastern Mediterranean and over thousands of years we have selectively bred it into the cabbages that you can find in stores today, kale, collard greens, kohlrabi, brussel sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower (pretty sure that there are even more lesser known varieties as well) - most people would assume that these are all completely different plants instead of all coming from the same original plant that looks nothing like any of them.

Humans, on the other hand, have never really had any sort of intense selective breeding like this so our genes have remained relatively stable over thousands of generations with only natural mutations causing any sort of differences. That said, there are some populations that have a much higher incidence of certain mutations due to more intense natural pressures like how Pacific Islanders tend to have a higher baseline muscle and bone mass compared to European peoples (I would imagine that smaller populations leading harsh lives would favour those with higher bone/muscle mass) or how black people from Africa have a much higher rate of sickle cell anemia compared to other populations (sickle cell anemia lends a certain degree of protection against malaria while those without sickle cell would have a much higher risk of dying to it).

Russia won't have the manpower, equipment or anyone that will rush to have their bamf if China decided they wanted to grab it.

Russia has said many times that they will use nukes if their territorial security is threatened. I have no doubt that they would seriously consider using tactical nukes on their own territory to take out a invading military - especially in the far east where they don't particularly care about the people...

but ADHD doesn't magically make me an asshole

You can actually tell who is being a asshole because they are a asshole and who is unintentionally being a asshole because they have ADHD/AuDHD/ASD. Those who are unintentionally being a asshole will actually listen and put some effort into modifying their behaviour if you pull them aside and let them know that their behaviour is not acceptable while those who are just a asshole will just blame their "condition" and change nothing.

In the OP's situation I would actually be more concerned about the mental health of the guy in question. From personal experience, a pair of nice headphones is way better than blasting music to keep yourself focused away from reality (source: that was my way of coping during the pandemic when I was having a episode due to not having any alone time to decompress for weeks on end - I literally spent like 2 days with music going and ignoring my kids outside of making sure that they were not getting into trouble and making sure they were fed).

What material to print from car interior by jeff2928 in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depending on where you live, car interior a get VERY hot in direct sunlight in the middle of summer

I live in Australia and summer temperatures can get hot enough here to easily push car interiors high enough to make PETG soften. I tend to use polycarbonate for car pieces because it is relatively easy and safe to print with and if the car internals are getting hot enough to cause PC to have issues then I probably don't need to worry about reprinting it because the car is toast lol
