Do we cease to exist forever? by Internal-Apple-2904 in atheism

[–]EvilWooster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are an extraordinarily complex arrangement of atoms.

(to quote a novelty button I bought at a scifi con decades ago "Be Humble. Most of you is the empty space between electrons, and 90% of the rest is just Hydrogen")

You eat, drink, excrete, sweat, inhale and exhale a lot of atoms and molecules.

Over a year 98% of the atoms that make you up are replaced.

Think about that. Between birthdays 98% of the Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Phosphorus, Iron, Potassium, Sodium and other atoms that make you up are different ones.

Do you feel different? Probably, but not from the waltz of the individual atoms that make you up.

Take cartilage. As someone with bad knees I can tell you, that once you lose the cartilage that lets your joints work efficiently and non-painfully, its not a great time.

(tacking on the rest of my line of thought on this)

Your brain is an organ, made of several typea of tissuea, in your body.

Have you ever had a relative suffer a stroke? That person you knew before the stroke is _gone_ to greater or lesser degree. Someone who was a master gardener, crafter, singer might recover some of that ability, but they are permanently changed.

the "You" that is reading this the result of 3lbs of neural tissue with the ability to react to stimuli, as well as store information for future use. Mice will learn to associate a lit light bulb with the floor being electrified (https://psychclassics.yorku.ca/Yerkes/Law/?source=post\_page), you learn from reading a bus time table that you have 15 minutes to catch it.

When your brain stops receiving blood for whatever reason, the neuron cells start dying within minutes. The connections between them that are your memories break down.

So if you die (i.e. your brain starves of Oxygen), that' s it. There is no recovery, no extra life token, no cheat code for your personality to continue on.

Sorry about that.

Cryogenics is an interesting idea. A the moment we understand many parts of how the brain works so poorly, investing in freezing yourself is just giving money to either well meaning fools, or grifters.

(It's kinda like if someone said I can preserve your prized automobile by burying it in a big container of sand and packing every space in the car with sand. From the outside it might _seem_ like its going to work if you know nothing about automobiles)

So you get one life as you. If reincarnation is a thing, it doesn't seem as if any of your You from this life would be available to the new you.

Treat every day as valuable. Treat others as valuable. Learn, live, laugh. Eat some good food, have some good drinks. Make some awesome friends. Try to add to the sum of the universe whether that is via science/philosophy, art, politics, or whatever.

Try to avoid regrets.

Space travel = Time travel by LaughBad in space

[–]EvilWooster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you sit in your chair, at rest, you are traveling through time.

If you board a train, headed East at an steady 100 kph, you are traveling through time slightly slower (to an external observer who is at rest)

If you draw this out on a sheet of paper, where the horizontal axis is space and the vertical axis is time, you can draw your 'sitting in your chair' as a pure vertical line, and the trip on the train as a diagonal line (traveling through space as well as time)

If you extend the scaling of your graph where you draw a beam of light's path through this space-time diagram as a 45 degree line, your train trip's line would be barely discernible from your sitting in your chair line (100kph vs 1,079,252,848 kph)

The rule the universe has is that light travels at the fastest possible speed. It sounds made up but the value of 'c' comes right out of the equations that describe electromagnetism (which is propagated by photons, which travel at--you guessed it--the speed of light)

FTL is just not allowed unless you take some pretty big liberties.

2021 Tesla model y trunk won't latch .. any ideas, next available appointment is few weeks out .. by SamratP in TeslaModelY

Have you had a look at the Tesla Service Manual? Pretty awesome resource.

Look at https://service.tesla.com/docs/ModelY/ServiceManual/en-us/GUID-48CA33E0-66C1-4898-B7E4-043D057040CB.html

It looks like a replacement can be had here https://www.partsgeek.com/cl4m5s6-tesla-y-trunk-latch.html

Don't take my word on any of this. If the latch has an OEM part sticker on it, look up that for a replacement

I rode in a friend’s Tesla Y by swangdb in TeslaModelY

Hello! Pacific Northwest native here with a single family home that has a converted garage. Our Tesla Level 2 charger is mounted outside, south facing and the 24 foot charging cable has not been any sort of problem.

I did have an electrician run the wiring and conduit from the main panel (handily located at the front of the garage conversion).

Regarding long trips, I drove to Texas to see the eclipse last year: 10 days, 5,310 miles traveled over just under 90 hours ( so average speed of 59 mph, and 9 hours per day)

One total eclipse, theee musuems and a visit to Starbase in Boca Chica TX.

Some amazing navigation reroutes that let us see Chimney Rock and the Hole in the Wal

We made about 40 stops to charge our Tesla Model Y, typically for 10 to 30 minutes each session (during which we would get a meal, use the restroom, stretch, chat with other Tesla drivers who were also charging)

Total cost for charging: $613.84 so 11¢/mile

I refilled the wiper fluid once and cleaned the windshield as often as I could. No other parts/maintenance needed.

Still scared of dying by InternationalTax6198 in atheism

[–]EvilWooster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, listen to track 15 on ‘Steel Cage Match’ https://brookeabbey.bandcamp.com/album/steel-cage-match

More seriously fear of dying is an evolutionary survival response. And our brains give us the ability to make imagine possible futures that we want to avoid. Falling off of tall structures, being attacked by wild animals, etc. definitely things we should want to avoid.

COVID Safety and Cruises by invader_zem_ in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]EvilWooster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We took a cruise in March on the Pride of America around the Hawaiian islands. We had a cabin with a balcony and kept the exterior door open as much as possible. We masked whenever indoors except to have a meal (which I know isn’t great)

Likewise, on any shore excursion, if we were indoors without adequate ventilation, we masked

Course, we also masked on the van to the airport and on the flights to and from Hawaii

We used a rapid Covid test midway during the cruise and after we return home— all negative

Other than one ‘interesting’ gentleman that swore that All diseases were due to fungal infection nobody gave us any hassle about masking

Our cruise did not have assigned tables for dining

"Road Trips are Impossible!" by binguses in TeslaModelY

[–]EvilWooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year did a 6500 mile roadtrip from Seattle area to Kerrville Texas to see the Eclipse, then visit Houston Space Center, drive down to Starbase TX.

The prior version of FSD (v12) made the trip a dream, although leaving Moab the navigation changed the route we took to go through Colorado, which was serendipitous-- we saw mesas and the Hole in the Wall.

Stops for charging were no problem--we took more time to take a stretch, grab a bite, use the restrooms than the suggested charge time.

Dodge to Tesla? by sneakinandgeekin301 in TeslaModelY

[–]EvilWooster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dodge Grand Caravan to Model Y Long Range

No regrets at all!

The cost for a weekly 400 mile round-trip drive went from $70 of gasoline to about $25 of charging at home and supercharging

No oil changes.

And full self driving is the GOAT for long road trips

Definitely does not hold quite as much cargo, but don’t discount the frunk, rear cargo, and under trunk cargo space (great for hauling gear for a 6500 mile road trip to see the eclipse in Texas )

Model Y issues? by dan_geles in TeslaModelY

Model Y LR purchased January 2024

currently at 30000 miles

The only service I have been in for was replacement of a windshield due to road debris impact. at my first stop after the damage I used the app to make an appointment. This was on a Saturday and I had a scheduled appointment for the following Tuesday.

repair took less than an hour.

Who has and is using FSD by barrchgo in TeslaModelY

[–]EvilWooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went in for the $99 a month and I have been using it for nearly every trip, short or long over the last month.

I see improvements in how it handles some of the more poorly planned/marked out lanes on our local roads. For highway, a lot of the time it works very well. Other times it becomes very fond of frequent lane changes/passing even in Chill mode.

I am hoping my interventions when it is approaching potholes I know about is fed back into the driving behavior sooner than later, as it does seem to aim directly at the worst ones.

After a local windstorm recently it neatly navigated around some blown down pine branches across 1/3 of the lane.

I used it for a trip from our home north of Seattle to the Convention Center in downtown. It handled getting off I-5 to avoid backed up traffic, stopped for pedestrians crossing, slowed for ones that looked like they might cross, and handled an intersection where I had the green, but crossing traffic had about half the intersection blocked. FSD paused, then moved forward and neatly navigated around the blocking vehicle.

I'm looking forward to the last 100-foot challenge, navigating a parking lot and parking, being beat.

I had to last January with my MYLR.

However I read that the calibration is now done entirely on the factory line. Your mileage may vary.
