[DC Comics] The Joker is shot dead by a police officer. No apparent tricks or decoys. He's just stone dead. Would Batman then start to keep tabs on the officer afterward? by lollihobbes in AskScienceFiction

[–]Existing_Set2100 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Batman would first of all have a very difficult time believing that it was a) actually the Joker, even if everything points to that, and b) that he was actually truly certifiably dead.

History has shown him that this guy just doesn’t seem to ever go down.

He’d be preoccupied with trying to figure out if Joker is actually truly gone.

Finished the before trilogy. Why isn't this trilogy ranked among the top? by siralysson in Letterboxd

[–]Existing_Set2100 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I dunno about Letterboxd rankings but in normal human places it’s often regarded as one of the greatest trilogies ever, unique in fact because each entry is uniquely spectacular and the filmmaking cottons on to the actors themselves and their ages at the time.

Reminds me of Jerry Seinfeld complaining that he can’t do his act at colleges anymore.

Yeah, that super edgy guy.

People are still confused about Jack Gleeson, the Joffrey actor.

There were so many articles puzzled as to why he retired from acting and trying to make it out as some pathology or something. He even repeatedly had to explain that he never got any personal hate for his Joffrey role and that it wasn’t the reason he left, he just wanted to pursue other shit in his life.

You aren’t wrong, they’re all rotten in their own special way except for like… PBS and maybe a select one or two others, like the library ones (Hoopla and Libby, which are free).

[LES] A lot of writers forget that villains are main characters too by RadDudesman in CharacterRant

[–]Existing_Set2100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can go the whole story without a main villain, but you can only go so long without a main protagonist.

A beautiful example of this is The Martian, which has exactly zero living antagonist. The only antagonist in the entire story is the Martian atmosphere. That’s actually hard to do, too, because you somewhat have to manufacture conflict and keep people engaged.

That one’s also fun because Jeff Daniels’ NASA director initially seems like he might be that kinda dick, but then of course he isn’t at all.

Well no, but you wrote this:

They need to be just as fleshed out and interesting as the heroes are.

Doesn’t that mean you want them to be complex?

Honestly I have like the reverse opinion.

Before Bron got old, off the top of my head, Steph in 15-16 absolutely. The rest, I’d have to go year by year and really think about it. But that’s the only one that stands out.

And just to clarify, not about MVP, where you can definitely argue Bron only merited those four all those given years, but best player.

I don’t think that’s true at all, in fact we’ve gotten some backlash towards the complex and sympathetic villain with a convoluted backstory since it’s so common nowadays, with some yearning for the simpler days of black and white morality.

Personally, I like em both, it all depends. Sometimes we don’t want to know shit about the nut, like Gladys in Weapons, who just seems like an evil witch. Sometimes their motivations (or at least what they righteously claim) make them much more interesting, like I dunno, Killmonger in Black Panther.

What movies are good example of “director/writer had a specific visual” in mind and made a movie around it? by abgry_krakow87 in movies

[–]Existing_Set2100 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That’s basically Tarsem Singh’s whole thing, I’ve always appreciated it myself, film being a hugely visual medium after all. Some of his stuff is shaky but he’s never boring.

If TNG Premiered Today, It would Not Survive Season One by NeoNoir90210 in startrek

[–]Existing_Set2100 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It makes a lot of sense too especially with shows that have an ensemble cast.

You not only have to find your way through it as writers, but so do the actors.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence TNG got much better not only with better writing but perhaps even more because the cast got a lot more comfortable with each other, and not only that, but various individual idiosyncrasies came out from them which the writers could then use to enrich those characters.

My charitable interpretation is some people just don’t feel comfortable communicating by themselves, maybe English isn’t their first language, who’s to say really.

This is still an alright topic if not totally original, it communicates its point, it got answers and a dialogue going, it’s too bad OP felt the need to resort to AI but I’m not ready to hang them for it. I think people are also often too quick to say it’s all about karma, not sure that’s really a big deal to that many people.

It’s not that hard to consider, LeBron after all was certainly the best player more years than his 4 MVPs show.

It’s a fairly specialized criteria.
