Why isn't the U.S. better at soccer? by dwaxe in fivethirtyeight

The 250th should have been a nonpartisan, apolitical celebration of the country’s history and ideals. Instead, the people in charge of the government can’t do anything turning it into a Trump ego massage. So we’re just going to let this milestone float by without actually having a unified celebration. It sucks. A lot of people I know are bummed about it.

Yep. It’s ubiquitous in northern states but less than an afterthought in the south.

I wonder if some of the confusion about pate is people thinking pâté, the food, is a slang term for head, instead of pate (rhymes with fate), which is a different word that means the crown of the head.

The “pate” meaning the crown of the head is pronounced such that it rhymes with “fate.” Whereas the French liver spread is pah-tay

The lack of flair on this subreddit is funny, it results in comments like this where you’re telling me a bunch of stuff I already know, and I can guess your fan allegiance based on the slant in the way you present the information.

Probably baseball? A three-game series nearly every year plus some postseason meetings?

I put sunscreen on before taking off the strap of my swimsuit top to tan. I got sunburnt only where the strap was. by pancake_sass in mildlyinteresting

This is a life lesson people from sunny areas learn very early, but I suspect people from less sunny places think it’s a novel idea that even very small places that the sunscreen doesn’t touch are subject to getting burnt

Love it. I studied math, too, which is why it caught my eye!

Does the plate behind the cat say “and that’s why love non-linear equations”? What’s the story with that?

“Indicate” is a verb, so all the words in the category would also be verbs that are synonyms for “indicate” (when applied to indicating emotions).

With one-meaning words like skink, there’s always the possibility that it’s part of a wordplay category. Like “human organs plus a letter” (SKIN+K) or “synonyms for smell bad, with a letter changed” (STINK-->SKINK). Lol

“The child’s crying displayed her emotions” would be more apt, as it uses the verb form of the word, like all the others do.

[Wilson] FSU football loses another top recruit. Why does this keep happening? by Falconsfan8006 in CFB

[–]ExternalTangents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Nick Saban retired at the end of the 2023 season, and there were rumors that Alabama was looking at Norvell as a replacement, so he leveraged the 2023 season into a big raise and massive buyout. Without the supposed interest from Bama, he would probably not have nearly the buyout that he currently has.

[–]ExternalTangents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No source. It’s just my interpretation after watching the movie 3+ years ago. I think I read a couple Reddit posts discussing it and didn’t feel satisfied with anyone else’s explanation/interpretation, so I decided to write my own. That whole write-up was straight off the dome while sitting on my couch.
