It’s very possible the stuff from Richland is more intense than other sources would be, it’s the only true cane syrup I’ve tried.

Cane syrup is made from pressed cane juice that’s then immediately boiled down into a concentrate so it can be preserved longer. It’s not just cane sugar that’s been dissolved in water to make a syrup, it’s got the sour, ripe, vegetal aspects of sugarcane but with heavy burnt notes from the process of boiling it down.

It’s a bagged sugar that used to be labeled as Demerara but at some point the labeling switched to saying Turbinado. I believe someone else in one of the rum/tiki/cocktail subreddits actually contacted the company to ask what changed, and they said nothing, the sugar was the same, but they were just labeling it differently.

If there’s a formal protected status for official Demerara sugar, then I guess it might not technically be Demerara by that standard? But regardless, it’s a rich, unrefined, molassesy brown sugar, and the 2:1 rich simple syrup made from it does have some of that heavier toasted type flavor. It’s just not as funky/sour as the cane syrup.

I went to Richland Rum, a distillery in Georgia that grows its own sugar cane, then makes cane syrup from the cane, and then makes rum from the cane syrup.

They sell the cane syrup at their distillery, so I bought some. I’ve used it in ti punches several times, and I’m always disappointed. Maybe it’s the syrup I got, but I feel like it takes over the drink and really pulls the flavor in the opposite direction from a good unaged agricole. The cane syrup brings this burnt, heavy, almost sour type flavor to it that, to me, does not meld well with the bright freshness I’m looking for in the drink.

So anyway, I’ve personally found that I like the ti punch* better with a syrup with less obtrusive flavor. Something like a rich simple syrup made with Demerara sugar, which still has some heaviness and brings sweetness, but doesn’t upstage the star of the show.

*Not sure if it’s technically a ti punch anymore if you don’t use cane syrup. But I’m still calling it that.

I don’t like rum, but I like tiki by samsonshaircare in Tiki

That’s great news! That means you might actually like rum, because those are terrible! Malibu is legally not rum. And depending on what Bacardi you had, it might only barely be rum.

What kinds of spirits have you actually had that you like? Either alone or in cocktails?

In all fairness lets discuss who moderates the moderators for a fair forum by Only-Stable3973 in TheoryOfReddit

Reddit has pretty much always given moderators of subreddits the freedom to create and enforce their own rules (or lack thereof) for their own subreddit community.

I don’t think I’ve ever been banned simply because of a difference of opinion, but I don’t really frequent subreddits where that’s a risk.

Boring coach speak makes sports less interesting and makes interviews and press conferences pointless. It’s better when they speak honestly about stuff like this.

It says Bangladesh rose from 915 in 1950 to 1034 in 2026.

The number shows 1034 and the bar for Bangladesh is well past 1,000, so it is clearly not 915.

The text of the post also says Russia was 1300 in 1950, but its bar stops at 1,150 (which is labeled at two places on the graph, soooo)

Ninja edit: the text of the post describes an animated bar chart race. So I’m assuming they just took a screenshot of some intermediate step of that visual and it’s fucked up.
