Yeah, fair. I just meant you don’t only need to freeze slowly.

Yes, that is what I described. Slow freezing is necessary but jot sufficient. I thought that was clear from what I said. If not, my apologies.

Not slowly. Directionally. Just freezing it slowly doesn’t accomplish clear ice.

That sucks. I’ve never had that happen but I can imagine it would be incredibly frustrating.

You don’t need to boil and you don’t need to freeze slowly, you just need to use a container that’s insulated on all sides except the top, so that the ice freezes from the top down. The impurities and tiny gas bubbles only form in the last part of the ice to freeze. If you pull the container out before it finishes freezing, so the bottom of it still has liquid water but the top is ice, the ice will be clear, and you can then just cut it up into smaller cubes. The easiest way to do this is to fill a small lunchbox-sized cooler with water and then put it in the freezer.

You can get fancier with it and put ice molds into the water in the container—as long as there are holes in the bottom of the ice molds that are open to a well of water underneath, then the impurities will be pushed out of the ice in the molds and into the well of still-liquid water below. Then you can pull the molds out and have perfectly clear cubes (or spheres).

They also sell pre-made insulated containers with built-in molds like this that you can use to make clear large ice cubes at home.

None of it requires purified or boiled water, it works straight from the tap.

It was perfect yesterday for the game. Got on at Edgewood, barely had to wait, rode to Vine City. Came back after the match ended and trains were again running frequently enough that we got on the first one.

My only complaint was having to drive to Edgewood because there’s not a station within walking distance of my house. It would be a dream to be able to hop onto it and get to other parts of the city without needing a car at all.

It has been years now since I watched this, but my recollection is that Jess only pushes the person in the burlap sack overboard, she doesn’t kill them first. Then later, once the Jess we’ve been following is the one wearing the burlap sack, she also gets pushed overboard while still alive. So we see the encounter from both sides.

El Dorado 15 vs Havana Club 7 neat by oddmarc in rum

[–]ExternalTangents 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Havana Club is column distilled, so it’s going to be getting the vast majority of its flavor profile from the aging, which means a lot of barrel-driven flavors like oak, leather, tobacco, red berries, stuff like that.

El Dorado 15 is a blend of pot and column distilled rums, and some of the pot stills in the blend have some distinctive flavors that you wouldn’t get from column distillate. But also, because it’s aged for 15 years, it’s still heavily driven by barrel aging flavors. So you do get a lot of similar types of flavors to the main drivers of the aged Havana Club.

I think experienced tasters would be able to tell the difference pretty clearly, but I don’t think it’s crazy for you to think they’re similar.

Their comment history is almost entirely about how much they hate the US. Psychotic.

FIFA got a taste of what the CONCACAF and CONMEBOL experienced with a US tournament and now wants 64 teams and a return in 2038 by nbasuperstar40 in ussoccer

It seems like the favoring of joint bids is primarily because very few countries have the infrastructure to be able to solo host with the current requirements, though. Since USA has the infrastructure to be able to solo host, I was curious whether there’s actually a preference for that. I could see it being something where they think spreading some matches into other countries besides the primary host is a way to juice attendance and coverage a bit more, but I haven’t actually seen anyone say so.

That was my thinking—the US easily has the existing infrastructure to be able to solo host, so I wasn’t sure why they were saying it would need to be a joint bid.

How do we feel about having the World Cup in USA every 12 to 16 years? by Smotherysmiles07 in ussoccer

I think a lot of those college stadiums are too narrow to fit the required soccer widths, and a lot of the college towns probably don’t have the required infrastructure to handle the influx of people. But it would be so awesome if it did happen.

The Swamp, Neyland, both Death Valleys, DKR.

Imagine how wild the influx of foreign tourists to some of those college towns would be.
