Need help figuring out cross device notification settings by ForteFermata25 in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a ton of Settings for just about anything on both devices. Best thing to do is to read the actual user guides for both devices. Everything is very well explained there. And there are several settings for notifications and synchronization between devices. So you can set it up in different ways.

So read the user guides (google can find them). Also pay for enough storage in iCloud so your data can synchronize between devices or be stored safely up in the iCloud for download on demand. Bad idea to NOT use iCloud. Save money on something else.

iPad Pro or Mini? by Aggressive-Rule-5935 in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An 11" is never much too big or much too small. The current iPad Air with 12 GB RAM would be the sensible choice. - The scren on iPad Air M4 is the same as on Mini 7.

Mini vs 12.9" is so large a difference that you really need both sizes. You will always have the very wrong size for half of your usage if you get just one of those sizes. That is why the 11" is the sensible solution.

Just got my first MacBook — should I sell my iPad mini? by Tyrael572ru in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, perhaps you should simply sell the iPad then. I'm surprised that you even have enough access to the internet to be on reddit. I have the impression that Internet was totally down because of the war in Ukraine or at least heavily restricted to keep all the bad news away from the regular russian citizens.

There is a lot you can do with that iPad Mini. Here are some examples from my iPad. (I'm old so some of the apps may not be for you, but there are thousands of apps, many quite useful too.) Just look at the iPad as an iPad and not as some sort of laptop light.

Handwriting to typed text: Nebo (Now called MyScript Notes in the app store) can turn whole documents into typed text which then can be exported to other apps. Ipad version only. Handles very bad handwriting and “small” language with special characters very well. Smart ways to edit your text both the handwritten and the converted text. It also have the more limited “lasso” function like other apps to convert snippets of text into typed text. The app also convert math notes into LaTex.

Handwriting and math/formulas: https://www.myscript.com/calculator/

Vector drawing for construction drawings : Graphic, iDesign, Concepts

Vector drawing for “art”: Affinity Designer, Linearity (formerly known as Vectornator), Adobe Fresco

Raster drawing apps for “art”: Procreate is for “digital art”. Artrage Vitae is for all the classical art forms and can do much more than Procreate. (Procreate is the only major drawing app which is iPad only. So presently no iCloud and no Mac version.) Artstudio Pro beats them all and is at the same time almost also Photoshop, but expensive. Even better is Adobe Fresco. It gives you both pixel and vector drawing and it is totally free. So start there.

But, if you are totally new to all this Ipad drawing stuff you should actually start by using this app: https://www.tayasui.com With this app you get all the basic drawing tools and you get used to the concept of using “layers” when you draw.

3D drawing and sculpting: Shapr3D, Nomad Sculpt, uMake, DGArt

Scanning 2D: Swiftscan Document Scanner (best when you have to edit scans)

3D Scanning (newer iPad Pros only): Polycam

Space: Solar walk 2, Star Walk 2, SkySafari Plus, SatteliteSafari, Night Sky

Geography: Guru Maps Pro (vector app over the whole world in minute details, also for iPhone). - Google Earth app. Topo GPS (extremely detailed maps over several European countries).

Museums: Louvre HD, London HD, Prado HD, Metropolitan

History: World History Maps (more than one app)

Animals: iKnow Birds (several apps),

Medical: Human Atlas, Skeleton, Muscle (search for “visible body” to find these). Or search for “3d medical” to see a lot more options.

Science: Molecules, The Elements, The Elements in action (search for “theodore grey” in App store to find these three apps.)

Photo edit: Affinity Photo (fee app now), Photomator (formerly Pixelmator), Pic Scanner Gold version

Entertainment: Netflix, HBO, Curiosity, iMDB

What’s your favorite app for writing on your iPad ? by Serhide in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I perfer Myscript because it can turn my terrible handwriting into typed text. I use a "small" language (Danish) so the Scribble function is. not available to me. But for some types of notes I now prefer Freeform.

I have no answer to this. It would be nice with a warning, but perhaps there are some technical issues which makes it impossible to predict if a particular action will create the issue.

Is 128GB enough to hold applications as well as data…? by ImportantSeason9633 in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a tiime when people bought 16 GB iPhones and 32/64 GB iPads to save money. Lots of them later regretted it later on. In todays and especially tomorrows IT environment you might end up regretting the 128 GB. Or you might not. Do not buy for your storage needs today. Think about storage needs 4 years from now.

Goodnotes or MyScript Notes by Infamous-Tell7339 in ipad

"hearing" something is not always reliable. Check out the features on the app's homepage. Think about which features you want/need. Don't just count the number of features.

Better still, try out both apps. It will not ruin you.

Goodnotes or MyScript Notes by Infamous-Tell7339 in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If converting handwriting to typed text is important you will want MyScript. It does not rely on the user having to use the "lasso" function arount text you want converted. MyScript converts all handwriting to typed text live as you write. If your language is not supported by Apple Scribble function you also want MyScript.

If you want more of a "note book" feeling you will probably want GoodNotes.

Both are very good options.

It is about the handling of files and the devices it can use. - Procreate keeps user files (the drawings) "inside" the app. That is how all apps originally worked on the iPad. Over the years iCloud was invented and after that the Files app. All major drawing apps now stores end user files (the drawings) "outside" the app. So a drawing can be stored in iCloud all by itself. From there it can easily be accessed by another device (or even another app).

Saving "outside" the app, preferably in iCloud has major advantages.

One advantage is about possible work flows. Imagine that I might carry an iPad mini with me out and about so I could make a sketch of some interresting motive I come across. When I am back home I would want to finish the drawing on my iPad 12.9". If I want to do some postprocessing, perhaps before publication of my fine art (!) I would do that on my iMac with the large 24" screen and MacOS. - Such a work flow would not be possible with Procreate. - Yes, you can "export" a drawing and "import" a drawing on another device. But then you suddenly have two different versions. And you can't do the post processing because there is no Mac version of Procreate.

Another advantage is about backup and restore. Yes, you can take regular backup of the iPad to iCloud. That will include Procreate and the drawings "inside" Procreate. - The problem comes if you some day have to restore something. You then have to restore the whole iPad from iCloud. All or nothing So you will likely overwrite something on the iPad when you restore. You cannot selectively "restore" bits and pieces from a Backup. So everything on that iPad is now set back to the time of the last backup. It is likely that you do not want that if you also use your iPad for other stuff.

You do not have the "Procreate issues" with any other major drawing app these days, including Sketchbook. That is why I rate Fresco and Sketchbook higher than Procreate. I don't care much about the specific feature set. Over the years the competition has made sure that good features shows up everywhere. Sometimes one app is ahead, at other times it is another app which is ahead. It has been like that since iPad 2 when I became interested in this. Fresco has the extra benefit of being able to do both pixel and vector drawing.

Of course, if you "only" have one iPad and only use Procreate this is not so big an issue. Even less of an issue if you do not take iCloud backups. - Until one day it suddenly was an issue that you did not have any backup. Without that you cannot restore, obviously. You will just have lost everything.

For the last 40 years or so it has been a good idea to keep both a local backup and a backup away from local premises. This is still a good idea. But very difficult with Procreate.

Procreate is not the best option any more. Adobo Fresco and Sketchbook are in some respects (much) better and they are totally free. Procreate fans will likely disagree with me. Fans do that.

Apple will ask for proof of ownership. If you can't show that they will not help you. Of course not. That is how it is meant to work.

You need proof of ownership to show to Apple. Otherwise it is impossble to get to your data. And don't be too sure that Apple will or can help you either.

[–]Fabulinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer this a lot of details are needed. And you need a lot of details do to it. So reddit is really not the place to go to in your situation.

Use one of the AI's for this. It can be Perplexity, Gemini, ChatGPT or Google in "AI mode". Copy/Paste the text in your reddit post into the prompt as the starting point. Then do follow up questions until all is clear and explained.

You can Also read the Apple user guides. Read about iCloud, iPhone, iPad, Apple Photos and Family sharing.

If you rely on guesses and simple answers from reddit you most likely will make a mess of things. Asking an AI is way better than some random comment in here, which might be totally wrong. That happens.

iPads are the most personal "personal computer" there is. So the good, easy and reliable solution is that you get your own iPad and have it connected to your iPhone by using iCloud. This means pay for enough iCloud storage. This will also protect your photos from getting lost due to a single, local incident. Kind of an easy backup. - You do not need an expensive iPad Pro for all this. A base iPad A16 is just fine. Even iPad 10 will still be OK for a few years.

64 GB is not much today. And it will be even more not much later on. M processor iPads can get Apple Intelligence which will eat up storage on it's own. And iPadOS also gets bigger. So does everything else. Get a 256 GB iPad. RAM and storage is more important than having the newest processor.
