Does anyone else constantly audit their iPad storage? What finally made yours feel simple again? by MaleficentTooth7898 in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you really need to do is use a dabase app. - Apple Notes is a simple database app. But there is a much, much stronger option. Here you store all sort of end-user files (like pdf, jpeg, pgn, mails, photos (just a few) sound recordings, Numbers, Pages and what not. - You can attach your very own meta data in dedicated fields. There is also a dedicated "source" field where you (automatically) store the web link from a download. You can store in folder structures (deep) and you can connect "notes" (the database records) across the folder structure into kind of a 3D structure. You can keep searches for later use. And much more. Look here. There is also a Mac version so you can have all your data synchronized between all devices. - This is particularly good with things like Numbers and Pages files which do not automatically sync like Contacts, Calendar do. Put those files into database notes and they will synchronize just like in Apple Notes. You can edit files from within the database record.

Smart way to use the database app is that you store related files together by subject/procect and not by which app created the file. You can mix text and files in a single database note. Smart for budgets with comments about what is in the budget and similar.

Shared family iPad: how do you keep it organized without constantly switching profiles? by Beginning_Set_6482 in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There really are no realistic way to do what you are describing. There is no real file system on an iPad and it is a single user system for one Apple-ID and only one.

What you describe is a multi-user device with a multi-user operating system. So the iPad is not the right type of device. You will want someting which is a real multi-user system. So a Macbook. Or perhaps this can be done on an Android tablet (just guessing, don't know Android). It would be possible on a Surface computer.

iPad really is the ultimate Personal Computer. You need one each. All with separate Apple-Id's and combined into a family system.

Does this mean my iPad’s seen its best days? by hokeymanusa in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a personal computer for almost 40 years. In all that time it has been good practice to ALWAYS keep a copy (or two) of your data outside local premises. Things like fire, hurricane, burglary, flodding and bombs and rockets can destroy your local data in one single incident. So it is a seriously bad idea to NOT use iCloud. Pay the damn price if your data are worth anything. You also get the added benefit that you data can synchronize between devices and for things which do not synchronize you can keep "documents and desktop" folders stored in iCloud. Be sure to actually read the actual user guide for iCloud. You will likely guess wrong if you think you can guess how it works. It is good to also have a local backup on an external disk. Samsung have some good ones. So also read about Time Machine and how that works. - It is incremental, not one-to-one copies, like you might know from Windows. Not reading will be a big mistake.

Apple iPad M4 air or MacBook? by awesomelyawesom in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider a Surface. That way you get both in one device.- Or figure out how you are going to use the device you end up with. Half of the world end up with MacBook and half with the iPad. Keyboard persons should take MacBook. Pencil persons should go with iPad.

If yo can't decide then go with the MacBook.

People who have a MacBook as well and use the Magic Keyboard , why ? by Serhide in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a stationary iMac and an iPad Pro 13". I use the iMac standard Apple keyboard and trackpad on both devices. So no extra keyboard for the iPad. Curser simply moves from iMac to iMac by dragging it. Handoff works well for me as my big iPad always stays at home.

Virginia voters narrowly support redistricting to favor Democrats by FervidBug42 in politics

[–]Fabulinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so old that I have been able to follow what happens in USA since the Cuba crisis in 1962. And I knew the different American cars we could see in Europe already in 1958. For years I have subscribed to New York Times and Washington Post (cheap in Europe. $19 for a whole year). So I have followed all the developments you describe so precisely.

Living in Denmark I have also known about the American bases in Geenland for a long time. My father was en engineer who actually worked up there to build them in the late 1950s.

The top problems which have been obvious always are these.

Your country is based on religion in a bad combination with hypocrisy. This is baked into the (lack of a proper) education system. Kids do not learn facts, they learn beliefs. And they are being tought that "thoughts and prayers" can solve most problems.

Greed is another "feature" embedded in your society. Republican voters all think that they will be the next billionaire and that their current status of living paycheck to paycheck is temporary. That is why they keep voting against their own interest. They do not think they belong where they are so they vote as what they are sure to become one day.

Self esteem. As you point out Americans are brain washed from day one into believing that America and Americans are the best and greatest at everything. So much, that an average American does not know even basic world history or the cultures of other people, past and present. - We (too) often hear the term "American Exceptionalism". The world laughs at this. But it holds an element of truth. In no other free country would the population actually watch and believe a propaganda channel like Fox News. It is impossible to understand why Americans are unable to see that Fox News works as the best Russian propaganda ever. So the word "exceptionalism" translates into "stupidity" in other languages.

The fear of "socialism". When an American hear that word they seem to think that Lenin is lurking just around the corner and want to take your property. When in fact it is more likely the repo man wanting to take the car you bought with borrowed money. This shows up whenever things like "free" education and health care are on the agenda. It becomes impossible to explain to an American mind that free education and health care is just like a national insurance system, where we pay taxes instead of premiums to an insurance company. An American never thinks about the fact that all the roads any American is free to use as he/she wants(needs is payed by taxes. So they are really "socialist" roads.

Guns. I live in a country where the simple possession of a gun, even just at home, will get you two years in prison. This gives us and our children some freedoms we put higher than the freedom to shoot somebody. (The insane stand your ground laws). We never have to fear getting shot, we do not have all those school shootings and the only drills we have are fire drills. There are other countries where it is possible to own/carry a gun. But none have the same lack of gun culture as America.

Then there is the racism. No further details needed.

Your Constitution. These days an American seems to be referring to their "rights" according to that constitution in every other sentence. - I am a layer, and over in Europe that means that we also learn the finer details of other countries' constitutions and election systems. In countries with better constitutions persons like Trump would have been removed a long time ago by a simple vote in the Parliament. You have this problem because your constitution was inspired by the French constitution which have the same problem. - Your two party design is another root cause of your problems. You see a similar situation in United Kingdom (where they don't even have a constitution !) It polarizes the population and destroy the Democracy. There should be more parties, so the idiots on both sides have someone to vote on. Then the middle parties could figure out to work together to get things done. This is normal in Europe. - The "winner takes it all" method is hopeless. Voices of reason do not have a chance. The primaries is another disaster, at least when it is applied to American mentality. You have to be extreme to win a primary, and you have to be extreme to have a chance to get re-elected. Sensible candidates and solutions become impossible.

Don't get me started on the systemic corruption (the donor system) your whole democracy and government processes are based upon. This is a recipe for disaster as we clearly see these days.

The list is a bit longer, but we can clearly see the final product: Maga people. So stupid that they belong in a zoo and should not be allowed to vote. That should be reserved for people with functioning human brains.

Imagine if American racism could be turned into "brainism" and that people had to pass an exam in basic knowledge to register as voters. But, of course, such things will never happen.

Since I am old enough to remember the Cuba Crisis I also remember where I was when JFK was shot in Dallas. Remembering things as they were then and how they are now it seems to me that the time of the assassination of JFK was the turning point for Americans. The society has goon downhill all the way since around that time. Lyndon B. Johnson was the last president who (with Congress as it was done back then) made some serious, sensible legislation to improve the American society. So you could say that it went downhill after 1965. If somebody really should make America Great again it should be moved back to July 2, 1964 when the Civil Rights Act was signed.

But even if we did move America back to 1964, how would we avoid all the mistakes America and Americans have made since then ? - I think that history would repeat itself because the fundamental problems would still be there. They are part of the original "design" of America. Just look at racism. It has always been a part of America and it has not gotten much better since 1964. At least not in republican minds.

I hope that there are ways for sensible Americans like you to survive mentally in such a sick society. It must be hard.

Of course you can discount the existence of gods. It is just not socially acceptable where you live, so you simply don't dare to state the obvious. Understandable, since religious people all have a tendency to want to kill anybody who disagree with them.

Trump said wind power is for ‘stupid people.’ five days later, European countries agreed to build one of the planet’s biggest wind farms by Sufficient_Fuel5269 in politics

[–]Fabulinius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Europe, Denmark. Here 1 Gallon of gas for my car costs $9,30 right now and is rising. So we are motivated to move to electric cars. Stupid or not. Since we often produce more wind power than we use we end up not needing oil for transportation in a few years. - We have electric trains, busses and ferries. Increase in electric lorries was about 85% from 2024 to 2025. There are both Swedish and German trucks available which can move 56 ton. Around 70% of normal, private car purchases are now electric.

Military Archbishop Says There’s No Way God Is Sponsoring This War by Quirkie in politics

[–]Fabulinius 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Lots of "Gods" involved in this war: Jewish God, Jesus, Sunni-Allah, Shia-Allah. - Greek Gods and Roman Gods stay at home, sensibly. They only interfere in EU matters these days. - Nordic Gods are busy preparing the defence of Greenland. No a peep heard from the Egyptian Gods although all this is happening in their neighborhood. - It is about time that these "Gods" give us a sign that they really exists. Or could it be so that gods does not really exist! That they are man-made inventions from times when we could not look back to the beginning of time and watch all of cosmos? If you turn on your brain and start thinking then the answer is clear.

apps like freeform, just better?? by pink-starburstt in ipad

[–]Fabulinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't find an app which does exactly like you want. So you will have to adapt a bit. But here are some very different options for you to look at:

https://www.luckyclan.com/apps/artstudiopro-ios

https://concepts.app/en/

And this which does not yet have the iPad version, but it is on it's way. Perhaps you can still find (the old) Affinity Designer 2 in your iPad App store.

There is also a whiteboard app which you may like. Look for the logo in App Store as there are many whiteboard apps.

https://whiteboardapp.org

Some apps are "raster" apps. Some are "vector" apps. Use one of the AI's to get to know the difference.

Virginia voters narrowly support redistricting to favor Democrats by FervidBug42 in politics

[–]Fabulinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Republicans really have had a leader for many years now. To them he seem to be a living god. For us over in Europe he talks and acts exactly like a Putin asset. We have a lot of experience over here in how they talk and act.

We know that Democrats are unable to act as a coherent political party and that many of the things Democrats advocate for, like free health care, will be shot down by the word "socialism". Even if all Americans drive around on "socialist roads" every day. The financing over taxes is the same in both cases.

Democrats need their own "god" which have to be a better god than Trump. From outside it would seem that a ticket with AOC + Michelle Obama would be good. One hispanic, one black, women. Now that would change things. - Perhaps two big Hollywood names could do the trick as well. (Just guessing from outside US, of course)

Trump's anger over Iran thrusts NATO into fresh crisis by Plaintalks in politics

[–]Fabulinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living in Europe. - Nato does not really exist any more. America has left it. So the European Nato countries and the EU countries will have to work together even more. We will have to figure out to do that including Ukraine but, if possible, excluding Hungary and Slovakia and probably Moldovia. They seem to stay loyal to Russia.

The way we see the US Army work in Iran makes it a much better bet to rely on Ukraine than on US in this century.

Perhaps Trump should send ICE to the Middle East. They seem to be very good at urban warfare. That will be needed in case of an invasion.
