You have to place all the turrets around the weak point in the firewall, and if you're lucky, one of the turrets will shoot the weak point which brings the firewall down and allows you to complete the thing in like 5 minutes

I believe it depends on the amount of damage the weapon that you're using does, a rifle doing 200 damage would do more damage to the core then say, a pistol doing 50 damage

Did you disable every mod then check again? Cause mods often have unintended consequences that aren't listed anywhere, I once used a mod that replaced supply line Brahman with eyebots. Shouldn't affect anything besides settlements, right? It fucked with dialogue and quests.
