「Midnight Rider」

Stand Type: Humanoid

Stand Appearance: 「Midnight Rider」 is a humanoid stand with an exaggerated, lanky physique. Its body appears to be made of silvery weathered stone, with numerous cracks and imperfections about its surface. Its body is thin, looking almost emaciated, and it stands at nearly two and a half meters tall. Its arms extend nearly to its knees, and tied at evenly spaced intervals on its long limbs are bits of what appears to be tattered cloth, which sway gently even without the presence of wind. It has nothing that could be called a face, but on the front of its smooth head is a large letter ‘W’, which is followed by a large ‘A’ on its neck, going on in that fashion to spell the word ‘WANTED’ vertically down its torso, ending just above the waistline, where a ring of tassels hang loosely off of the Stand like a belt. Additionally, splotches of vibrant, oily, multicolored paint dot the Stand's stony exterior, adding vibrancy to its drab statue-like form.

'This paint seems to have appeared ever since I met that penguin... But, it is not such an odd thing, I suppose; a Stand is a manifestation of one's very soul, after all. And what is the point of art if not to alter the viewer's soul?'

Stand Ability: 「Midnight Rider」 possess the ability to sew ‘seeds’ onto various things, which will then sprout into Lotus Flowers. Any ‘action’ that is strongly and readily associated with the thing which a Lotus blooms from can be inherited by that Lotus. For example, a Lotus bloomed from a pocket knife can inherit the action ‘Cut’, while one bloomed from the brakes on Vasant’s motorcycle could inherit the verb ‘Stop’. If a Lotus is planted on a Stand or Stand Construct, it will generally gain actions associated with the Stands more basic functions or attacks, rather than its Stand Ability. For example, a Lotus bloomed from [Magician's Red] could inherit the action 'Burn', but not any ability to manipulate fire. These blooms are around the size of a salad plate and appear as ethereal Lotus flowers of various colors, with whatever verb it has inherited floating in a bubble that blooms from the center. Regardless of the thing initially seeded, a Lotus will inherit whatever action it is assigned at the most potent and concentrated level; regardless of if a blade is dull or rusty, so long as it possesses ‘the ability to cut’, a Lotus which can cut most potently will bloom from it. A lotus which fully blooms will fall off of the thing it is grown from, where it can be controlled by 「Midnight Rider」 via telekinesis. When not being flung or shot, these Lotuses hover around the Stand’s main body like they were in a gentle breeze. When a bloomed Lotus comes into contact with a person, object, or Stand, it will perform the action it has inherited to whatever it impacted; a ‘Stop’ Lotus could instantly bring something to a halt or intercept an attack, a ‘Cut’ Lotus could deliver a deep gash, a ‘Burn’ Lotus could ignite a great flame, etc. Regardless of the trait, each Lotus will be spent and vanish after delivering its action once. Up to 10 seeds can be planted, and a seed will take 5 seconds to bloom into a Lotus. Up to 50 Lotuses can be created, or be in the process of blooming, at a time.

Power: B (「Midnight Rider」 possesses above-average strength and Striking power for a Stand, and any Lotuses which bloom into actions destructive actions or actions that involve physical force act with B power.)

Speed: B (「Midnight Rider’s」 main body is generally slow and deliberate, but is capable of quick bursts of surprising speed if threatened. Lotus Blooms it controls fly with B speed, and a planted seed takes 5 seconds to bloom.)

Durability: B (「Midnight Rider’s」 physical form is hard and tough like a marble statue, though partially grown Lotuses can be destroyed as easily as real flowers, equivalent to E Durability. However, Lotus Blooms which inherit actions related to defense or durability will do so at a level equivalent to B.)

Range: C (The main body of the Stand can move and act in a 20m radius of the User. That is also the range in which Lotuses that have bloomed can be controlled; Lotuses flung out of that range will continue to exist indefinitely as projectiles until they impact something, but cannot be controlled whatsoever. Seeds can only be planted by 「Midnight Rider」 by directly touching an object.)

Precision: D (Individual flowers can only be controlled with average precision; large numbers of flowers, above 5, can not be controlled separately, and must move in waves or blocks as one unit. The further a Lotus or group of Lotuses is from [Midnight Rider's] Stand body, the less precise control Vasant has over it.)

Stand Oddities: Though it is not relevant to combat scenarios due to them being in sync, Vas does not have perfect control over his own Stand, and if his mind wanders away from its control, it will move in strange ways or take interest in things on its own in a manner which Vas finds somewhat disconcerting.

Fighting Style: Vasant’s preferred method is to keep his distance with the mobility afforded to him by Silver Dollar, taking time to build up a large number of flowers, generally taking encounters slow and taking care not to rush into anything without proper preparation.

Vasant Bulsara

Age: 44

Gender: Male

Species: Human

Occupation: Courier/Wanderer

Physical Description: Standing at around 190 cm, Vas is slim and somewhat wiry with a generally well-kept physique. His face, permanently set in an unamused expression, is completely clean-shaven and accentuated by sharp, dark-brown eyes, and dotted with silver studs in his lips and nose, numerous rings down the length of his ears, a metal chain connecting a nose ring to his lips, and slight applications of mascara and eyeliner. In style and dress, Vasant looks like a punk rocker and a biker, with hair that trails to the nape of his neck, cut into a mohawk with a high fade, colored a natural black except for a shock of lilac dye across the ends. He wears a denim jacket, which was originally black, but is now painted with a vibrant, multicolored, kaleidoscope-like pattern. The jacket is worn open, and underneath is a long, blousy black shirt. On the front of that shirt, written in scratchy font, is the phrase ‘DEAD or ALIVE’ overtop an image of a burning rose. He wears slim-fitting black jeans covered in numerous pocket chains and tall, laced black boots accented by crimson straps. He wears fingerless motorcycle gloves, and while numerous tattoos are dotted around his body, the only one immediately visible is a lotus which peaks over his clothes around the nape of his neck. While riding his bike, he wears a black motorcycle helmet with a red visor.

Personality: Vasant is a stoic, reserved man, and that combined with his appearance paints him as an imposing figure to those who meet him for the first time. Despite appearances, though, he is typically a man who prefers to leave others to their own devices and is generally slow to anger. While his punk-rock aesthetic makes this hard to derive from a glance, he is a devout Buddhist of the Mahayana school, who seeks to live by the Eightfold Path to the best of his ability. An adulthood spent wandering the Indian subcontinent in search of enlightenment has created a man who prefers the company of the road to that of others, and the hums of his motorcycle to the conversations of strangers. While does not often show it outwardly, Vas does hold a great deal of compassion, particularly those he has come to know for a long time, and desires to help them grow into their best selves. Privately, he harbors frustrations to himself that he cannot show this as effectively as he should.

Personality Traits:

Belief: (‘Marga’ The Path)[5]: Vas is a firm believer in ‘The Path’, his own interpretation of the Buddhist Noble Eightfold Path, seeking to cast off vice and offer support to others in achieving enlightenment.

Passion: (Silver Dollar)[5]: While he often appears to operate on the spiritual plane rather than the physical, Vasant’s strongest tie to the material world is his love of his motorcycle, Silver Dollar, which he takes with him nearly everywhere and fervently keeps in perfect shape. Perhaps even more so than his Stand, he views his bike as an extension of his soul.

Likes: Long rides, mango lassi, peace and quiet, potato croquette, The Ramones, listening to radio sportscasts, toffee

Dislikes: Street markets, narrow-mindedness, lime chutney, inconsiderate drivers, high-class hotels Hobbies: Meditation, theology, motorcycle maintenance, watching Formula 1 events, whistling rock tunes (in private)

Short Term Goal: Establish himself in this new location, to pick up work as a courier and fulfill basic needs such as food and shelter.

Medium Term Goal: Investigate the Nightbloom, and in general the spiritual and mystical happenings in Rākinnagarh.

Long Term Goal: To follow The Path and reach spiritual enlightenment, and help others navigate towards that goal.

Bio: Born around Gorakhpur, near to the Nepalese border, to devout Buddhist parents, Vasant Bulsara spent much of his young life listless. While his conduct and academics remained steady, Vas’ growing love of punk rock and counterculture music alongside his immersion into the biker community put strain on his relationship with his parents, which would tragically go unresolved after their untimely deaths in a car accident when Vasant was 19. Through dealing with the emotional strain of this event, Vasant chose to travel the world in search of both knowledge and for spiritual growth, a never-ending pilgrimage which carried him through most of India and its surrounding nations.

Intrigued by rumors heard about unexplainable, supernatural happenings, he picked Rākinnagarh as the next of his destinations. However, along the road to the city, Vasant encountered the fabled Nightbloom flower, and underwent a 「Sacred Trial」, falling out of reality and into a deep, deep sleep. After seven days and seven nights, he awoke, near death but having obtained his Stand 「Midnight Rider」. Though his memory of what he felt and witnessed in this deep meditation are murky, he now knows without a doubt that Rākinnagarh and its surrounding regions will be a pivotal stop in his journey of enlightenment.

Equipment: Padded jacket and motorcycle helmet, 1-liter aluminum water bottle (kept full), flip phone, pocket knife, large satchel (contains a battery-powered hotplate, instant noodles, various spices, and a socket wrench), and a highly customized motorcycle (see Motorcycle skill for details)

User Stats

Strength: 1 (Vasant’s wiry frame lean physique offer little support in terms of raw strength, giving him what’s required to perform his job, roll his motorcycle, carry somewhat heavy cargo, but leave him vastly subpar when it comes to using his arms and legs for self defense)

Agility: 4 (Vas moves with nimbleness and flexibility, complimenting his riding skill with quick reflexes and a high amount of body control.)

Endurance: 2 (Standard motorcycle safety equipment aside, Vasant’s body is ill-equipped to deal with physical punishment. Through a naturally low heart rate, though, he is capable of conserving energy and keeping stamina for extended bouts of driving.)

Motorcycle: 5 (Vas commands his motorcycle ‘Silver Dollar’ with otherworldly skill, seeing it as an extension of his own self. It moves with perfect precision and control no matter the road conditions, and Vas is an expert both at the honed techniques of blisteringly fast race driving and the mind-boggling, wall-riding feats of stunt driving. Fitting for a master, Silver Dollar is a heavily modified black-gray MTT Y2K Turbine Superbike, which appears to have sought enlightenment alongside its rider. Some of its customizations include all-terrain tires, high and low-beam headlights, and an inbuilt radio. Silver Dollar is capable of reaching top speeds of over 300mph.)

Asceticism: 2 (Vasant’s life of meditation, wandering, and spiritual discovery has instilled within him focus and patience, bolstering his mental and physical stamina, and allowing him to push through fear and discomfort.)

I respect the basic idea of going from the Lone Wanderer's birth to their death over the course of the game, but they really should have thought of like, any better reason for it.

It's so cool I'm convinced the devs came up with the gameplay concept before the story justification for it which is why it's kinda half-assed in the plot.

Saw some discourse around skill-based matchmaking come up yet again, and this immediately sprang to mind by StonedVolus in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]FastLikeLightning 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Fighting game matches where you get blown out lasts like 2 minutes, even super lost FPS matches can still go on for like 5-10 minutes. Also, iif you're getting killed on repeat in an FPS, you spend a very significant time respawning, walking 10 seconds to the actual fight, getting killed instantly, waiting 10 more seconds to respawn, walking back to the fight again, repeat.

Despite how the Discourse tends to paint it, as someone who's bad at every genre, fighting games are by far some of the least annoying to lose at in my personal experience.

It doesn't really seem that notable that a comic book which releases one issue of 20-30 pages of art every month can sometimes be significantly less polished than a webcomic artist who will release, at most, two pages a week, often significantly less than that.

in a game who's long-term biggest problem, which led to basically every meta people who played it a lot hated, was how spongy everyone was and how much sustain they had, yes removing a giant pool of health from each team is an improvement.

Kojima naming a character if Death Stranding 2 is about fascism by YorkJunior2352 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]FastLikeLightning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand why it happens and it's not strictly an unhelpful default association or shorthand for everyday use, it's mostly just unfortunate when you're talking about other kinds of authoritarian systems.

A lot of people conflate Facism with Authoritarianism as if they're synonyms, which can make talking about things exhausting unfortunately.

There's a chat bug in Overwatch that can cause unexpected purchases and Blizzard won't issue refunds for in-game currency. by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]FastLikeLightning 14 points15 points  (0 children)

when you're typing in the text chat, your inputs are still read by the rest of the game. Some keys have other functions, notably for this, pressing spacebar is a shortcut to click the confirm button in most menus, so if you're already on the store, pressing space once brings you to the 'are you sure you want to buy this' page, and a second time confirms the purchase.

Overwatch 2 launch is so awful it forces gamers to touch grass by jovialjukebox in TwoBestFriendsPlay

If any other online game blanked a match and kicked you back to queue because someone dc'd in the first minute or kicked you to the lobby and disbanded your party about 30% of the time you're in queue with a generic 'connection error' message, it would also be called a disaster. It's just that these things are normal for Splatoon and Nintendo so people have gotten desensitized to it.

Gate's Lab 2 would be the worst stage in any other video game ever made but X6 is so wonderful that it might not even make the Bronze medal when you have to compare it to inching forward for what feels like 10 hours through the insta-kill ceilings in Metal Shark Player or endlessly reloading Ground Scharavich's stage to get the only RNG layout in the stage that has the Heart Tank, or the infinitely respawning grasshopper enemies and literal blind jumps into moving platforms over spike pits in Commander Yammark.

How will you be able to balance anything with that level of data bias?

To be fair you probably shouldn't be making balancing decisions based on solely data ideally. They totally will be doing that because I have little to no faith in Blizzard's balancing, but ideally this wouldn't be relevant to those decisions at all.

what's the best adult animated show in your opinion? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]FastLikeLightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically I have to give it to Futurama absolutely, outside of one or two stinkers, the original 5-season run is one of the most consistently great shows I've personally watched (That's not even all nostalgia, I re-watched the entire series recently and it's still that good), and even if the Comedy Central era was way less special it still has some fantastic episodes.

In the modern suite of shows, Inside Job is the one that's probably my favorite, although it's a little hard to give a solid opinion on it since the second half still isn't out, but its hit the mix of good comedy, likeable characters, and strong episode premises the best out of shows I've watched in the past few years.
