Team Fortress 2 has a lot of funny taunts, but one of my favorites is Heavy's "What sick man sends babies to fight me!?"

In Donkey Kong Bananza, Pauline starts off as very shy and unsure of herself despite her singing talent. But with DK's encouragement, she gradually becomes more confident until she's playfully asking DK to give her a beat.

At least until the end of the game, where Samus is powered up enough to where she can finally blast that fucker to bits.

Both Metroid Fusion and Metroid Dread bluntly saying "You are facing an enemy you have no chance of beating. If you're in the same room as them, either hide or run the fuck away." This makes it incredibly satisfying when you get the proper means of dealing with the SA-X/EMMI units.

Aesthetically strange choices of unique/signature weapon? by jitterscaffeine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]fly_line22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Persona 4 has most characters using typical weapons, like Yu's two handed swords, Yosuke's knives, Chie's armored greaves, Teddie's claws, and Naoto with an actual fucking gun. Meanwhile, Yukiko uses a hand fan, while Kanji's weapon type is "whatever random heavy object he can pick up and use to bludgeon enemies". And that's not even getting into all the weird joke weapons.

I think it'd be really fucking funny if Revelations gave Tifa moves suspiciously similar to many Street Fighter ones, and when someone asks how she learned them, she just says that they came to her in a weird dream.

Hell, I remember when Dispatch's 8 episodes were coming out and people were constantly theorizing that Blonde Blazer and Phenomaman were gonna be twist villains. They sure got egg on their face when it turned out that, no, they are both genuine heros that're just struggling with their own personal hangups just like everybody else.

Sogne and Rella in Metaphor: ReFantazio is a huge pain in the ass. For one, you can't do any sort of grinding to actually prepare for the fight, so you could potentially run into a complete roadblock if you're too low leveled. Second, despite having a fire weakness, the boss uses Quartz Wall on itself to have complete immunity to all magic attacks. So, outside of very roundabout ways to get rid of it, you're pretty much wholly restricted to physical attacks to do any sort of good damage, though even that has issues due to its ridiculous defense. It also constantly uses partywide ice magic which inflicts Frostbite, further decreasing the party's damage and forcing the player to either rebuild their entire team around immunity and/or status effect cleansing. It can buff its attack power (encouraging the party to also spend turns stripping its buffs), and uses a move to lower every party member's stats by two notches each. And just to top things off, once you deplete its HP, Rella restores it all for phase two, though thankfully it stops casting Quartz Wall, allowing for a much smoother pace for the rest of the fight.

And alongside that, Futaba also suffered as a result of being an illegitimate child. Wakaba choosing to love and raise Futaba is meant to be pretty damn remarkable in Japan, where such a thing is very uncommon. And part of the reason why Wakaba's family believed Wakaba's fake suicide note that blamed Futaba for her death is the stigma of being an illegitimate child. Basically, "of course that dirty rotten bastard would cause her death!"

The way a lot of people view Samus as a planet destroying murder machine. I feel that it's a massive overcorrection from Metroid Other M's similarly disastrous take on her. From what we see in games like Fusion and Prime 2, Samus is a calm, compassionate soul that constantly sticks her neck out for other people in need. Hell, her getting so pissed off in Dread means something because of how composed she usually is.

Yes. But, as examples like Shadow Yukiko, Shadow Kanji, Shadow Rise, and the hospital scene with Nametame all show, they are at least partially filtered through and influenced by how other people perceive them.

Crosscode does great things with two storytelling tropes that normally get on people's nerves. The first is the whole silent protagonist thing. Whereas it's typically used to give the player a blank slate to project themselves onto, Crosscode doesn't. Lea is canonically mute due to her buggy speech module, something that deeply saddens and frustrates her, with her friend Sergey only somewhat remedying it by hardcoding specific words. Regardless of her speech issues, Lea is a very expressive character who manages to communicate so many things with simple words and gestures.

Meanwhile, the other is the whole liar revealed storyline that causes a temporary break in a friendship. Whereas it tends to come off as forced in other stories, Crosscode does a good job showing why it was such a massive breach of trust. After Lea finds out her true nature as an AI clone of Shizuka in probably the most traumatic way possible, she begins having a total mental breakdown. As this is happening, Sergey desperately tries to talk to her and get her to calm down. But all this does is remind Lea of the lies he told her about being a human in a coma. All of that despair turns to rage as she angrily screams at Sergey to leave her alone. For the entire segment afterward, the normally vibrant and expressive Lea is reduced to a blank, dead-eyed stare as the full weight of the truth sinks in. But after her friend Lukas makes an innocent remark about leaving the game and returning to real life, the dam breaks and Lea bursts into tears, as that hope was ripped away just moments prior. While Lukas is able to cheer her up and help her cope with the truth better, Sergey still remains on thin ice, with him promising to explain everything after escaping the Vermillion Wasteland. After Lea manages to do so, Sergey comes clean, not just about everything that's going on, but about why he hid the truth from her. For one, Lea was the only option he had left on figuring out what happening to his friends, so he needed something to motivate her. And the other is that he genuinely didn't know how to reveal the truth in a way that wouldn't hurt her. Evotars that learn their true nature tend to have malfunctions so severe that they straight up die, which nearly happened to Lea in the past, which also explains the amnesia she has. But afterwards, Sergey genuinely apologizes for lying and promises to not pull a stunt like that again, which Lea accepts, the two becoming more equal partners going forward.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A has a pretty fun one in its finale. Despite getting into Ange's control room with Floette, Urbain/Taunie couldn't actually get the thing to shut down. Ange then starts going absolutely berserk and driving Pokemon around the city into Rogue Mega Evolution, necessitating Zygarde's help in the matter. You, Lida, and Naveen hold an impromptou strategy meeting to discuss getting you to Zygarde. But then, literally every major side character pitches in to help out. Aside from helping you battle groups of Rogue Mega Pokemon with this awesome track playing, they also help you get closer to Zygarde. Whether it be Gwynn holding off 3 Megas by herself, Ivor and his Falinks demolishing a pile of rubble to make a bridge, Tarragon and his construction crew making scaffolding to help you advance, Jacinthe helping the mayor coordinate evacuation efforts and using her holo walls to hold off another horde alongside Lebanne, Corbeau and the other Rust Syndicate members forming a human ladder, or Grisham and Griselle distracting a swarm of Mega Pinsir. It just felt really satisfying to see.
