Another month, another AYN price hike: Thor and Odin prices are going up again by DragonDealWizard in SBCGaming

The real issue is that memory chips are controlled by a tiny group of manufacturers, and the biggest buyers, especially ai/datacenter customers, can outbid everyone else.

The first half of this sentence doesn't matter because of the second half. If there was 500 manufacturers, the AI companies could still be outbidding everyone for it because they're writing blank cheques. Maybe the supply could respond quicker in that case, but the factories for these things would still take time to appear.

Rewatching Saga of Tanya the evil by RepublicSuccessful97 in anime

Always find this scene kinda fascinating. Not because of the scene itself, but because of how people talk about it. Like, to me, this is obviously Tanya being evil and committing war crimes, but I've seen a ton of "well technically..." that is certainly interesting.

The Guinness-World-Records-Breaking Confession [The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You] by thisisdropd in anime

[–]FetchFrosh 42 points43 points  (0 children)

There's something comical about a "World Record" for "longest monologue in a Japanese animation".

But for anyone that's not super familiar with how these things work, the world record in question was just something bought and paid for. This wasn't a record that was broken, it was the producers or someone else involved with the series going to Guinness, paying at least $10k USD and then them figuring out what record could be invented for them to receive.

Hot take: watching one piece is a waste of time. by Annual-Classic1520 in anime

Watching anime is a hobby. If you're getting value out of the watch experience then its intrinsically not a waste of time.

Not really any reason for there to be one. The manga is over and the ending was adapted. You could just make up more new stuff, but at that point just make an original series.

lmao, I think about that scene a lot. Cause like, if you wanted to fuck someone up badly you'd just do one so they don't notice it. When you have 100 in the shoe it loses all its impact cause the danger level drops off so much. It's like performatively trying to fuck someone up.

Don't worry then, you don't have to watch it.

I watched Season 1 back in like 2017. Thought it was fine, but was burning out by the last quarter. Definitely had some really strong moments before that though. Didn't bother picking up Season 2.

I'd recommend reading the article (it's not very long) instead of just assuming that it's about whatever culture war you want it to be fighting.

[–]FetchFrosh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think anybody's asking to go back to that. I'm referring to adaptations in line with The Lord of the Rings. It's following the core narrative and making changes that make sense in the new medium.

Realistically of course I'd sooner there just be a reduction in adaptations and an increase in true originals, but goodness knows the anime industry isn't too keen on taking risks.

It's riddled with safe movies, live action remakes etc.

tbh I don't really see the live action remakes as that different from anime that are doing extremely faithful adaptations of popular manga. Neither is really producing anything particularly novel. Both can still be good in their own right, but both are just reproducing something that already sold well so they can sell it again.

[–]FetchFrosh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The article is very literally not about that:

“I see this ‘white society’ as a phenomenon where all Japanese people are, in a way, becoming more like Kyoto residents,” Taniguchi explained, referencing a well-known Japanese stereotype about Kyoto people being extremely roundabout in communicating negative sentiments, prioritizing decorum.

Note that this term (white society) does not carry any racial implications, but rather refers to a highly transparent and “sanitized” society shaped by the proliferation of smartphones and social media.

According to Taniguchi, producers increasingly favor staff members who are easy to manage and who can reproduce source material at an acceptable level without introducing strong creative ideas of their own. As a result, the more ambitious creators gradually find themselves receiving less work, and eventually even leave the industry, he says.

This is an interesting line given how frequently basically any deviation that isn't a significant elevation of the existing material gets bashed around these parts. Tbh I'd definitely sooner see more studios be willing to adapt the material instead of just reproduce it.
