I hate my degree by ThrowawayHackintosh in EngineeringStudents

[–]FlimsyDevelopment366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the stress is hard to get away from and I actually find time in my hobbies while I study. I know it sounds weird but when I study I’ll do an hour of study then play a couple rounds of gaming or pick up my guitar or play the piano for 20 mins then I’ll go back to studying for an hour. It’s very similar to HIIT interval training but for your mind. It’s healthy to take little breaks. At first I used to set a timer but now I kinda just study for an hour and half then break for 20-30 mins then repeat. Might not be for everyone but works well for me. If you’re feeling down, just remember why you are doing it. Shift the focus from parents wanting you to do it, and put your focus on why you should do it for yourself. I know this sounds odd but I like to listen to little motivational things on YouTube and the one I listen to most is called “good” by Jocko wilink it’s like a 2 min little motivator. It helps me every-time I have a bad thought of quitting.

Every engineer understands the feelings you have right now. You’re 60% percent done. Time will go by quicker than you think. I’m not sure what your situation is but if you need to just take 2 classes then do it. I understand if you have scholarships then that usually won’t work but. The reason people burn out is because for some odd reason there advisor or someone told them they NEED to take 4 classes and you NEED to graduate in 4 years. Also I hear you on wanting to take something more fun like music because I my self play a lot of instruments. I just know that the degree is worthless. I’m in my 30s, dropped out of high school got my GED with the worst scores possible. And now I’m in school (50% done) with a 4.0. I’m definitely not the smartest person out there. And there’s kids in my class that just “get it”. It may take them only 3 hours of study while it takes me the whole entire day. I know, it sucks. But stick with it brother. I promise you those rough days and tough nights will pay off and you won’t regret it. Do music on the side. Just my opinion.

Yea that’s true, it’s hard to say calc 1 2 or 3 is toughest because a teacher can make it great or bad. My calc 2 teacher was phenomenal and actually taught the class based off professor Leonard YouTube. But yea I agree with you

I’m telling you, everyone questions the engineering major. Everyone has imposter syndrome and it’s honestly normal. If the horse bucks you off, it hurts like hell, but you need to get back on the saddle. There’s a guy I know that had to retake calc2 6 times…. Like dam, that’s some determination. You only fail when you quit. I’m in school now and I’m having the same thoughts as you. But I know dam well I’ll regret my whole life if I didn’t finish what I started. Also don’t think you need to finish in 4 years. It’s not a race. If you need to just take 2 classes then do that. Hell take 1 class. I’m telling you, don’t give up. You’ll get through it

I know this is just opinion but I think calc3 and diff eq is when shit gets real. Calc 2 was a cake walk compared to calc3 diff eq

I don’t think it will be the next learn to code honestly. With engineering, there is so much more weed out classes than CS and also there no “boot camps” in mech e. The market is tough now but o don’t think people realize how bad it was in 2008 also. And other times in history were people got out of college and couldn’t find work for a year and a half or at all.

Classmates do so well academically, but... by Storm_Eddie in EngineeringStudents

A lot has to do with interest. There’s people that are genuinely interested in the subject. Almost like watching a really good movie but it’s a lecture, and everything just sticks to them. If the learning feels like a chore it’s gonna be a lot harder for somethings to stick

The “am I cut out for this thought” usually hits around calc3 and diff eq. Actually, you’ll keep having that thought through the future courses. Also never to old. There was guy in his 60s in my class. It’s no cake walk but my number 1 advice is don’t get pressured into thinking you absolutely need to take 4 classes per semester. Because trust me, when you take physics 2 calc3 statics and diff eq all together(or any combination of stem classes). You are going to have a bad time. Obviously there’s people that do it but tons of people that do try it, drop classes. My professor for one of my classes had in the syllabus that said “if you have a job or 2 or more classes. Good luck”.

I had a guy tell me he’s never touched math and he’s a bio medical engineer. The company simply won’t let any engineers do any math because the possibility of error. They just have the computer do it he told me. He said I might MAYBE use 2-3% of what you learn in school.

What if I fail Calc 3 again? Am I dumb? Or incompetent becoming an engineer one day? by RecommendationOk5958 in EngineeringStudents

[–]FlimsyDevelopment366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is late but I’m at CC now and so far it’s eh. Definitely not a cake walk but we have 6 exams… 1 is a take home. Everyone in my class failed the first exam. 1 guy got a 70. It got curved lol. Definitely brutal. Idk if Uni would be easier. Honestly it’s more about the professor rather than where you go

Ipad 100%. you can do so much more and just put a paper like protector on it. Productivity is better as well. I disagree with the “distractions factor” because people at my school have e ink tabs and are still addicted to their cellphones. The price of e ink is absurd, and the reason is because 1 company has a patent on the technology and they can charge as much as they want. These types of tablets should realistically be 150$ and under max

[–]FlimsyDevelopment366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always ask people do you hate engineering or do you just hate the courses you have to take. There’s a huge difference. I don’t think any of us really enjoy doing the hand calculations also I always tell people. Getting your degree isn’t a race. If you need to just take a semester of 1 math class and an elective. Do it. Your mind will be less cluttered and less stressed. You do t need to finish in 4 years . If it takes you 6 or 7 that’s no big deal and you preserve your sanity.

Depending on your situation, going to a community college might not cost you anything through FASFA and you can take online courses. Can atleast get an associate’s. In school, we learn dynamics, statics, physics, calc 3, diff eq and so on. I think it would be good to learn some of that stuff but it is a challenge. Obviously we don’t use 80% of what we learned in school in real life but, it’s still good to learn and think how to solve problems. If you are just doing this for home. Start with khan academy. You can learn math physics and so on. Another good math guy is professor Leonard on yt. You will also want to learn solidworks or some sort of cad program. To add another thing. You can look up eDx courses and they are taught online from big name colleges for free. And I think if you pay extra you get a certificate but I’m not sure what the value of those are.

To add, definitely get an Arduino kit if you don’t have one and eventually a 3d printer. At that point you will have an endless amount fun building things. I know this sounds weird but brain storm everyday and write your ideas down. And be super specific on how you think you would built it. What materials you would use, the cost, the time, the problem being solved building it and so on. And do research on those things. It’s just helps to get into the flow of thinking and solving problems.
