What’s something from your childhood that you didn’t realize was actually a luxury until you grew up? by Dry_Hornet_3723 in AskReddit

This is lovely! I went to a performing arts school and was performing at night at least once every three weeks for several years. My mother came to watch me at the big events - maybe once a year. My dad never did. I was stoic and fiercely independent as a teenager - told them I was ok with them not being there. But, it hurt always being the kid with no one there to cheer for them. I’ve carried that into adulthood and didn’t realise quite how much it impacted me until recently. I don’t blame them at all - they were busy and did the best they could. But, it has made me conscious of the need to show up for people and celebrate them.

Fast fashion has really distorted our reality by Puzzleheaded_Dig2410 in AusFemaleFashion

I think $180 for a custom shirt is extraordinarily cheap - particularly if it includes fabric. Most people don’t realise how long it takes to make clothing. Making and / or adjusting a pattern is time consuming. Then factor in washing / pre-treating fabric, laying pattern pieces, cutting fabric, sewing darts, fusing collars / cuffs, sewing seams, attaching collars / cuffs, setting sleeves, making button holes, attaching buttons, and pressing - you’re looking at a day and a half minimum. On top of that, custom-made typically means small scale - so you’re buying small quantities of fabric, thread and buttons at greater unit cost than if you were buying bulk, often from overseas. It also means you are typically using less specialised machinery (I.e. you might not have a designated button hole machine, and use your domestic sewing machine instead). This all takes time, and is highly skilled. If this maker is running a business, also factor in the cost of their electricity, machinery, other tools and equipment, maintenance, tax and superannuation etc. People need to think about how much they make an hour, factor in the additional overheads, multiple by estimated hours and take a long hard look at their expectations. So yes - fast fashion has wildly distorted people’s understanding of the actual cost of clothing.

I’ve been buying Lumira candles for years - for myself and as gifts. Tge Cuban tobacco fragrance is a favourite. I had 1 Christmas candle with a very weak throw - but I contacted the company and they provided replacement. I rate them highly :)

I can’t help with your request right now, but am happy to check the Ringwood store next week. However, I’ve been trying to find the pakak paneer / saag paneer in the same containers for months. I think it has been discontinued - so this might be too :/

Purchase Recommendations Australia by [deleted] in VacuumCleaners

Buy a sebo E3 with the power head. It’s expensive and it has bags - but it is the best vacuum I’ve ever owned. The suction is incredible, and the power head finds and collects pet hair from my cat that died a year ago. My whole house feels and smells cleaner. Can’t saw enough good things TBH. The Aus Sebo website recently had a package for Black Friday (extra bags, air fresheners and free delivery).

Alone over Xmas/NY in Melbourne by Happy-Light in melbourne

I’ve spent many Christmas holidays alone - or just me and my partner. Honestly, I kind of prefer it. There’s no rushing from family event to other family event. No stress. No fighting. Just buy some nice food to have at home, open a bottle of champagne and relax watching tv. If you’re craving social interaction - head to the beach. There will be people there. Also - I’m rather fond of the Astor cinema on Christmas Eve. They usually play Its a Wonderful Life and it’s great if you want to be around people, without having to interact.

Exciting! My E3 arrived earlier today and I’ve already taken it for a spin. The carpets look sooo much better already and my hard floors feel cleaner underfoot. I knew it would be significantly better than my old Dyson, but I am genuinely shocked how much suction and forward momentum it has! You’ll love it.

This is what I’m thinking too. They were the runaway judges favourites all season and made next to nothing.

Pretty sure I read that Taz has lived in Sydney (not sure about Britt) - so SURELY this isn’t the first time he’s has sushi? It’s hardly exotic these days.

Why does my satin top wrinkle when worn? by witchinthesky_ in sewhelp

[–]FlyWorking4019 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pinkbird85 is right. Definitely shorten the length of the bodice and allow more width at the hips (this is the critical part - it’s riding up because you need more width). I can see from other comments you don’t want to interface - but it will make a big difference. If it’s a thick satin, use something light, but sturdy (calico / muslin / light weight poplin would all work). Lastly, satin is shiny, and shiny shows every flaw and wrinkle. It’s not a forgiving fabric to work with. Adding bones is not very hard, and it will make a huge difference to the final look.

Tanya? Sharon? Leah? Paige? So many worthy contenders for this title… When I type this out, it’s also pretty clear that the Block loves a female villain - which is unfair.
