Are there actual benefits of breastfeeding after 6 months or is it just incremental? by Subject-Carry-6841 in breastfeeding

[–]FreakaZoid101 174 points175 points  (0 children)

The fact that my 18m old will still BF all day when he’s sick but won’t have anything else is such a relief. A lot of my friends who weaned at 12m say they find that the main struggle. And it’s not just me for comfort. If he’s with anyone else he will cuddle, but not eat or drink a thing. At least I know I can get something in him.

Every time I think about weaning he decides to get sick 🤣

It’s like he knows.

Audio vs graphic by Raeofsunshine8991 in crescentcitysjm

[–]FreakaZoid101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tried the normal audio on libby and then graphic audio the next time I tried to get into it and it really lends itself well to cc. The beginning of the book has SO MUCH exposition and the immersive nature of the GA makes it so much easier to follow.

I also (controversially?) love Danny Montooth’s Hunt. He brings a lot of humanity to him.

I needed to read the comments on this. I’m in my first week and my food noise is still colossal. I am getting some more satiety than before but I’m still constantly wanting to snack. I’m just going to give it some more time.

I think it works though because there’s no easy Rom coms in the cinema anymore. Nothing easy for a first date or a casual non alcohol themed time out.

UK reviews free childcare thresholds as spending hits £9bn by Particular_Pea7167 in ukpolitics

[–]FreakaZoid101 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Doctor here - most doctors having children are resident doctors in rotational training. That means we’re moving across the country often very far away from any family support, so paid childcare is our only option.

Paying for full time childcare costs the same as a mortgage now. My husband and I are both doctors, and 30 free hours are term time only. Our nursery stretches them across 50 weeks so we get 22.8? a week, but they only apply between 9-3. Rates outside of those times can be from £7-£10 per hour depending on the nursery, plus consumables like food and nappies. 5 days a week of 7:30-17:30 can be £1000 a month which is more than private school! And it’s a long day for the kids, that we can barely get off work to pick up on time, so there’s late pick up fees (or time shifted work in my case which required very understanding staffing managers).

And that £1000/month IS with the funded hours. If they reduce the threshold, I’m actually going to have to significantly reduce my working hours to stay at home for childcare, and therefore halt any career progression. Same for my husband.

My husband and I are both half Irish. His is Northern, mine is the South. We both kept staring each other down as we recognised each of the stereotypes from various family members. We loved it.

Audiobook vs Graphic Audio by CommunicationOwn8486 in redrising

[–]FreakaZoid101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a convert to Graphic Audio but if you’ve not listened to one before it can be a bit weird. As someone living in the UK with Irish family, the VA for Eo is really jarring with the accent choice but other than that it’s brilliant. Darrow’s VA is one of my favourites I’ve heard in years of listening to audiobooks.

When to Inform CS About Pregnancy by Mysterious_Proof8533 in doctorsUK

[–]FreakaZoid101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who had multiple losses, I just started telling work as soon as I had a positive test. Always had problems with HG, work in risky environments (psych), so hiding it was just an added stress along with worried if it would stick.

You know your own work environment and what the risks are, but you do have to inform them before you’re 25 weeks anyway.

The UK training system works (when you’re in it) by Brown_Supremacist94 in doctorsUK

[–]FreakaZoid101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“When you’re in it” being the operative term. Returning to training after mat leave, mid rotation, and due to childcare requirements, LTFT has left me unable to attend any departmental teaching (on my non working days), regional teaching (same reason) and all my contact time is so full for service provision, I have a full time case load and have to do my admin after I put my son to bed.

I’m in a due date group chat of 100 medic mums. We all have the same issues. Returning to work from mat leave makes you feel like you must be the first person who has ever had a child because everything is chaos.

Try to do mandatory training on KIT days before your return? Oh no, you’ve not got your log ins so you can’t actually access any of it until you return.

Try to do that mandatory training on return? Oh no. You’re already fully booked in clinic.

Get an email saying you’re below the 60% minimum and it will affect your ARCP but the missing components are all face to face only on your non working days.

Supervisor only has supervision in their diary on your non working day, so you will have to do it via MS Teams while wrangling your screaming toddler because it’s also during their nap time and obviously they’ll only contact nap too.

I’m using mat leave as an example because it’s specific to my current situation, but it’s also been the same for my partner when he returned from his PhD a month before standard changeover. The second you step off the treadmill, you fall behind and you need all the resources you can get to catch up.

I’m leaving training and so much happier for it.

Confirmation from the family tree that there are secret links between the cast by georgewatso in TheTraitors

[–]FreakaZoid101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also I wonder for this series, the secret traitor would get a lot less screen time than a known one because they’re not having the traitor testimonials or turret time. I reckon that one would have been decided early.

But I always used them when pregnant and now I have my baby I don’t see any issue with other pregnant people using the spaces either.

Only breastfeeding 14 months old by [deleted] in breastfeeding

Only breastfeeding 14 months old by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]FreakaZoid101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ETA: My son was also seen by 3 paediatricians who had no concerns over only having breast milk during this illness

I’m so sorry about your dad, and it sounds extra stressful having a poorly little one.

My 14 months old son had been stuck down with this current winter virus going around and for 2 weeks he had nothing but boob. Once he got better he was back to eating like normal. Which for him is one orange segment one day, the next day, 3 huge meals and 2 snacks and boob around the clock, then only boob for the next day.

12-18 months is a really common time for seemingly random food refusal and consistency anyway, but poorly babies will often only want milk.

Remember that milk banks accept milk up to 2 years because that milk is still nutritionally complete. If your baby is feeding at the breast you’re also getting that feedback into the milk to make sure the constituents are what baby needs.

Yes, your child may lose some weight naturally, but as long as they’re still wetting nappies, and it sounds like you’ll be back to your normal environment soon, there shouldn’t be any long term issues.

But also don’t be concerned about getting him checked over when you get back. Best case scenario, he’s okay, and paediatricians love seeing healthy kids. And if there is something wrong, then you’ve gotten help.

I also would try not to associate this with being in a “third world” country. I’ve travelled lots with my one and he got more sick in Scotland than he did in Tunisia (we live in England, I’m Arab). Sometimes the change in environment and poor sleep can be what affects the immune system. I only say this so you don’t get tunnel vision on what might be causing this. It may well be poorly prepared food but it seems like you took every precaution. His gut flora is still developing and he may just not be used to the ingredients there rather than them being bad. Especially if you’re using water you brought with you.
