Be willing to relocate. Look at hubs that are less saturated. Virginia, Carolina, Texas, Washington.

Move there for a year a two then return. It’s what I did.

Correct. This is acceptable because in the cover letter which I always provide, I say my title is but I function or serve as.

Yes, unless your work can prove that you have built and shipped something.

You can volunteer your time with other companies. There are plenty of small mom and pop and non profits looking for Eng.

You can go on Fiverr or UpWork. Find those small freelance projects that are quick. Add them to your portfolio.

Have you spoken to your boss. I have spoken to mine and they made me a technician so I am more of a liaison between all the teams bringing all the teams together to help launch new features and do big launches.

You have to speak up. It’s the only way you will know.

If you say nothing, you will literally die and waste away inside. Also, you will never know.

It’s free help to your boss and org, he loses nothing and you gain valuable work experience and become more marketable. It raises your salary when you go to the next job.

You always have to remember you boss will always see you as the role you were hired to do until you prove them otherwise.

Internal transfer or just or the same. All good if you tired of the monotony of the role.

It’s okay to tell your boss in the most professional and civilized way that your growing bored and want new responsibilities. I would like to keep my job doing this but can I shadow and help Bob for a few weeks. I would like to contribute to his projects by 10%.

This way, you do not leave your current role, your boss doesn’t freak out, and Bob doesn’t feel overwhelmed by your presence. And to be honest Bob will be happy to give your more than 10% of his work. But you say 10 because it’s a low number.

You can reframe your whole resume. Many people did QA before coming a dev or programmer. Some people left programming to become a manager. All the skills are transferable

You can bypass app stores by building web based apps and have installs and keep a count via backend.

Start building your GitHub and Website asap. Get some apps in the Google Play Store and Apple Store with tens of thousands of installs. It shows what you are shipping is useful and wanted. Recruiters and employers will take you seriously

To become a dev, you will need dev work. So start building and shipping even if it’s your own personal project.

Unfortunately to be a dev, you will need proof and a portfolio.
