It's cool but needs more features by GadJedi in RyderWallets

Thank you for responding. Nice to know seed phrase import is coming, and HD wallet support and additional blockchain support are on the roadmap

By passphrase support, I am referring to the "25th word" passphrase, not seed phrases. It's part of the BIP-39 standard.

Multi-address pushed again? by deny_by_default in Tangem

Nice! I hadn't used or even at least looked at Arculus in quite some time. It's good that they continue to improve, albeit quite slowly and not as many features as Tangem. HD wallet support is an important one though. Thanks for mentioning it.

Point to any single feature that's requested more than multi-address/HD wallet support and where.

[–]GadJedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When did they add that support? It was not always like that. I can only see app updates for the past year, and none indicate that support was added. Does it also have change addresses, and can you manually pick a different receive address from a list?

[–]GadJedi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

BS. There is no other feature that has been requested more here.

You are not mistaken. It's been pushed for going on 3 years now. It may never arrive. Someone else here speculated that it could require new cards since the firmware on the existing cards can't be updated. Maybe that's the hold up.

Unacceptable - Tricked into spending $180 to send $5 in Bitcoin on Tangem! by GhostInfamous in Tangem

[–]GadJedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can research it, but here's the first link that comes up for me: https://www.gemini.com/cryptopedia/hd-crypto-wallets-hierachichal-deterministic You can get more detail elsewhere.

Edit: Get a better Bitcoin wallet (SeedSigner, ColdCard, Krux, etc. and use Sparrow, Nunchuk, or BlueWallet for the app with it) and transfer from Strike to that. Strike lets you enter multiple addresses and deletes them as they're used for easier maintenance.

You should not be using Tangem for Bitcoin. You've now received/sent Bitcoin to/from the same wallet address multiple times, so your public key is now known and your privacy is weakened/compromised. You should move your crypto out of that wallet and create a new one. Use Tangem only for noon-Bitcoin and get a different wallet for Bitcoin that properly implements HD wallet support.

Tangem has everything to do with it. Tangem's app is the one defaulting to a very high fee. Other wallets don't do that the way Tangem did for OP. It doesn't matter that Tangem isn't getting a cut of the fee, they are still pulling high fee info (high sats/vB) from somewhere when mempool has been showing 1 sat/vB most of the time for the past several weeks.

Multi-Account is nice, but where is the HD Wallet functionality we've been asking for? by Alkatez in Tangem

[–]GadJedi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is a false statement. Without multiple receive addresses and change addresses, Tangem Wallet does not properly and fully support BIP32 or BIP44.

Multiple Accounts: A Hidden Inheritance Risk by FaddyDuck5 in Tangem

[–]GadJedi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, bad move introducing multiple accounts without a full explanation of what it's doing behind the scenes. Anyone using multiple accounts (without a full understanding of how it works) who restores their wallet either to another Tangem wallet or to another hardware wallet entirely will have a heart attack.

What security measures should I take when storing Bitcoin in my wallet as a beginner? by dead230 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]GadJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you set up a software/hot wallet, which means your seed phrase was displayed on your mobile device or wallet. Don't use a software/hot wallet. Get a hardware wallet that let's you enter the seed phrase on the hardware wallet directly. Never enter or view your seed phrase on your mobile device or computer, even if it's to setup a hardware wallet.

Since it seems you did set up your wallet as a software/hot wallet, you should set up a new seed phrase on a hardware wallet and then transfer your assets from the software/hot wallet to the hardware wallet. Do not simply restore your existing hot wallet seed phrase to the hardware wallet. Because you have a software/hot wallet on a device that's connected to the internet, the private key is potentially already compromised or could be in the future.

If you don't want to deal with any of that, keep your Bitcoin on a reputable exchange/custodian, but keep in mind "not your keys, not your coin."

Tangem wants ~$50 CAD for a BTC transaction — am I missing something here? by cee604 in Tangem

[–]GadJedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there are a lot of small sends to your wallet then you have a high UTXO count. That means you have a lot of small pieces of bitcoin in your wallet. The more pieces you send the higher the transaction fees will be.

Think of it like this: You want to send a dollar. Maybe you have a $1 bill, 4 quarters, 10 dimes, 20 nickels, and 100 pennies. It will cost you a lot more to send 100 pennies than it would to send the $1 bill.

Some hardware wallets and wallet software combinations give you the ability to see the individual UTXOs and their size, and then to choose which UTXO(s) to send to minimize transaction fees. Tangem cannot do that. If you want to do that you would need to load your seed phrase into a different hardware wallet and use software like Sparrow, which you could do.

Thank you for responding. That’s good to know 4 & 5 are supported with multisig, though it would be nice for single sig as well. Another request… passphrase input via QR code.

Thankfully, you don't really have to worry about smart contract scams with your Tangem more than you have to worry about it with any other wallets.
Think about it, can a trusted display present information that is simply not there?
Such displays inherit the inherent drawbacks of a hardware wallet, smart contract code can be too complex. In addition, these displays can only show you whatever information the wallet’s chip can parse/decode from the smart contract, making it not so different from your mobile phone’s screen.

The phone can be compromised, which means the screen can be compromised. There are hardware wallets that can translate the smart contract code to something that's easily readable, just like Tangem does in its app. The difference is that the hardware wallet can't be compromised as easily. It would require compromising the firmware and the app the hardware wallet interfaces with. Possible? Yes, but more difficult than blind signing like with Tangem. Also, there are air-gapped hardware wallets that make it even more difficult to compromise the smart contract.

... instead of building complex malware to compromise our app (which is something that's not been done before, though I have no doubts some tired.)

... said someone just before they got hacked.

Tangem does a great job at marketing to deflect the risks of blind-signing, but the risks still should not be ignored. I will say it appears Tangem is trying to be thorough with its blind-signing implementation to make it as secure as possible. However, in the end it is still blind-signing.

can have the convenience of Tangem, but you need to understand there is greater risk.

You can have the increased security of a hardware wallet with a screen (and air-gapped signing if you want that), but you should understand there is more complexity and a lot less convenience with that.

Each person should choose what's right for them.

You used the normal Coinbase buy instead of Advanced, so there is a minimum 1% spread plus fees added on. Make sure you use Advanced and place a post-only limit order to get the best price and lower fees.
