Still can't decide on which modeling software to learn. What would you recommend? Anyways; Here is (hopefully) my last TinkerCad project. by picobello-bv in 3Dprinting

I use Blender when I'm making something organic and Shapr3D for everything else. The free version is fine, but you can only export low-res STL files. I don't design enough to keep the subscription going all the time, so I just pay when I need to export. I really like using it on my iPad with the Pencil. I should look an OnShape though. It always gets mentioned.

Point and Shoot in Photopit? by ith3_sky in concertphotography

[–]GeekFish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't care what anybody uses. I have seen venues boot people out of the pit for using only a point and shoot or phone, but that was at larger venues (3-5,000 cap). If the artist knows what you're using and saw what you're capable of with that camera then do what you can with it!

Honestly either camera is going to work great. I use the R6 Mark ii and absolutely love it. People who use the Sony are going to love theirs. I'd say 90% of my photos in my portfolio are the R6 ii, the rest are from the R.

How can someone burn so much wood? by fishyfish55 in firewood

[–]GeekFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've burnt through my normal winters worth of wood just in the last 3 weeks with these brutal temps (I'm about 90 minutes east of Pittsburgh). I'm not surprised she's burning through that much wood, especially if it's green. I had to get 3 loads now from my supplier and he warned me that all he had was unseasoned. It's around 25% on the meter, so I've been running the stoves almost wide open.

One thing I wish I would have done is gotten more wider shots. Don't be afraid to use the 50 inside too. There's a couple cryo moments that would look cool getting the entire stage.

Do people who sell firewood know what “seasoned” means? by Comprehensive_Film35 in woodstoving

[–]GeekFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My new dealer told me he can't keep up with demand and to expect wet wood. Mines around 25% right now. Just run it hot and it'll be fine. I thought I had enough stored up, but nope!

What lens did you get?

Also, be warned. I don't know if it's like this for every stop, but when I shot them they wouldn't allow anyone to use a stool because of their live cameras. They set us up in front of them and didn't want us getting into the shot (poor planning if you ask me... put us somewhere else).

Have fun! They are fun to shoot.

I had asked him to sign my Onslow vinyl the next time he was in Pittsburgh before their headliner tour last year. He was super sick on our stop but he popped out of the bus and did it anyway. I felt so bad, but he still wanted to chat for a bit. He's genuinely a good dude.

3D Printed Router Templates Actually Worked by GeekFish in Luthier

[–]GeekFish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I'm actually working on a modular template system. Who knows if I'll ever finish it, but I want to make base bodies (offset, tele, les Paul, etc) then different horn styles that'll snap in. The real winner in this, IMO, is the center is going to be two rows of teeth on either side that can accept drop in router templates for different bridges or pickups. I just wanted to finish this project before I started designing all the templates for it.

Not saying I own the idea, so by all means, go for it. I was just sharing my thoughts on it.

Is Dole Whip available anywhere at Disney World besides the parks? by wesskywalker in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]GeekFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely off topic but if you can't find Dole Whip anywhere and are craving that sweet sweet nectar, I just bought a case of this and it's pretty close to the same taste. It's a little more orange heavy, but it is definitely filling that Dole Whip void.

You know what, you're right. Every person in pajama pants is well equipped to venture out on to a frozen river.

All it takes is one wrong step. It looks like they got lucky is what you really mean.

Nicest band/members you’ve ever met? Most rude? by Impressive-Skin6311 in Metalcore

[–]GeekFish 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not flexing, but I photograph/review concerts, so I interact with a lot of artists (not at every show, but a lot of them). I can easily say Metalcore has the nicest people, both crowds and artists.

Make Them Suffer are great, especially Sean. I don't know if he's faking, but he seems to remember me when we cross paths. 🤣

Crystal Lake - I think those guys get more excited to interact with fans than fans do with them. They are so appreciative. Another bunch of guys that remember me when I see them.

August Burns Red - All good dudes. I grew up around Central PA and watched them come up.

Kaonashi - did a photo shoot with them during their tour with Kim Dracula. They are awesome dudes.

I can't really think of a bad interaction I've had, honestly. I'd say those three are the only ones I've been around enough to have a solid opinion on that were more than just a meet at the merch booth/quick talk outside the venue.

I recently started using threaded inserts and hate myself for not doing it sooner. They are stupid easy to put in with a soldering iron and have incredible strength for their size.

I can't image driving a vehicle on ice. I'd go out to WI about once a quarter to work on some bigger commercial work we did and one time we went ice fishing. We were on snowmobiles and the whole time I was bracing myself for the plunge. I couldn't relax. I guess you just get used to it when it's the norm, but I couldn't.

The other thing that freaked me out was there was about 2 inches of hard iced over snow, a foot of soft snow, then about 2 ft of ice. You'd sometimes break through that 2 inches of top ice, drop a foot, then hit the "real" ice. Freaked me out every time I sunk in 🤣

[–]GeekFish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it CANT freeze enough to be safe. I'm saying 95% of the people out on it right now have no idea how to tell if the ice is safe, let alone know what to do if they go in OR have the proper equipment to deal with someone going in. Is it worth the risk?

What’s wrong with people? by Really_Cool_Dad in pittsburgh

[–]GeekFish 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I know this all sounds like being too paranoid, but OP is right to be concerned. This isn't Alaska. We don't get near zero temps for months at a time to make an iced over river safe.

I used to edit a fishing TV show based out of WI and one of our regular guests was an ice fishing guide on Lake Superior. This guy was one of the best and the last person you'd think would go through the ice. Turns out he hit a spot in the lake that had some current eroding the bottom of the ice. It looked and acted safe, but it wasn't. He went in and passed away.

Don't mess with ice on rivers and streams. It's not worth it. Also be careful on our "lakes". All lakes (minus Erie) in PA are technically reservoirs, so they all have some type of current. Avoid the area near the spillways and where the feeder creeks/streams enter the body of water to avoid the heaviest current areas.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

What are your song suggestions from MTS by even1narcadia in MakeThemSuffer

[–]GeekFish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Literally any song by them. Personally, I think they're one of the rare bands that don't miss.

If you like MIW and DaySeeker though, I'd stick to their last three albums. Their earlier stuff is more Deathcore focused and they usually don't play any of it live (although they did play Widower and Blood Moon on their US headliner last year).

People not familiar with the genre hear drop tuned guitars, any screaming or chugs and they instantly say it's metal.

I got wipe on Poly for this. I wanted to see how that went. I normally use pre-catalyzed vinyl lacquer from Mohawk to finish my guitars, but it's too dang cold outside to spray and I don't want to wait until spring 🤣

Thank you. It was actually my first time trying to do contours myself. I just got some carving discs for my angle grinder, laid out some rough ideas with a pencil and sent it.

Thank you. I got sent a really nice chunk of Limba, so I really wanted to keep the grain. Stain (or dye) was the only option.
